One of the guys is a chef and he has opened a pie restaurant - going really well.
There seems to be a few of these Gastro Pie Pubs springing up now - we were in one the other day in Newcastle really nice stuff and reasonable

Nice one! I'm making a rare visit to the UK in April which will include Newcastle. Might give this place a visit!

Why don't you Lancastrians call it MEAT and potato pie?

I've just read this thread through and despite me just having eaten my breakfast, it has made me absolutely ravenous for a pie!
Shop-bought, you can't beat Haffners steak and kidney pie
Home-made, you can't beat my missus's cheese, onion and mashed potato pie

Standard scran when I was a skint apprentice.
I'm glad someone else is aware of this culinary delight. Ask for a pie butty in South Yorkshire and they've no idea what you're on about. You'd think they'd be able to work it out from the name.
I'd go for brown sauce on mine.

The functions standard was a big dollop of tatie pie or corned beef hash with separate pie crust and a choice of pickles. HP or Ketchup available. Winter warmer to the tips of your toes.

1. Mannings Cheese and Onion pie followed by a Meat and Onion
2. Hollands Pototo and Meat ont'urf - wouldn't eat one anywhere else mind.
3. Thomas the Baker's Cheese and Onion Pasty (No Mannings in York and I've moved upmarket and onto pasties)

Best ever pork pies are from Wilsons butchers in Crossgates in Leeds.
Best footy match pie was chicken balti at Huddersfield, but the best pie in the whole wide world is Mrs Siddo's cheese and onion pie , but NOT with potato.

Slightly o/t but I wonder what Judy Garlands' favourite pie was and why she liked to weigh it somewhere over a rainbow.

I'll second that. The pork and black pudding pies at Wilsons are the dogs gonads.

Paul McCartney mentioned butter pies in "Admiral Halsey/Hands Across the Water" on "Ram". "Butter wouldn't melt, so I put it in the pie".

That should be called a Lample pie and it sounds good.

Never eat one of those Skipton pies warm whilst walking briskly back to the station slightly inebriated. Ruins a good suit

Best pies I've bought were in the butchers opposite Skipton Castle, next to the roundabout.
Probably the same as mentioned above.

The Skipton pork pies referenced above are very likely Stanforths, certainly the one across from the Castle pub on the roundabout is.
You do need to perfect the 'Stanforths shuffle' if you get a warm one as the juices will indeed ruin your clothes. I prefer to nibble a hole in the crust then drain the juices into my gaping maw
I'd recommend Drake and Macefields in Skipton also, local opinion is split between these two and they are fantastic.
My opinion is that Stanforths do the best pork pies but D&M's are better for everything else.
