Not many people follow skiing these days - me included but I did used to love watching it in the 80s and 90s on Ski Sunday. Tomba the Bomba was always my favourite - big Italian slalom skier.

This guy Dave Ryding finished 2nd yesterday in the downhill slalom - the best finish in a race by a Brit since 1981 !!

Even more interesting is that he is from Colne and part of Pendle ski club - learning on the dry ski slopes.

When you think the lack of facilities in this country, lack of weather and conditions and also the general lack of interest and backing of the sport this is a pretty amazing achievement. Don`t think yesterdays performance was completely out of the blue or a freak result as he has apparently been going well this season and in training so could be worthwhile checking in on the odd Ski Sunday again - and the old iconic theme tune !!

.....and how good is our area at producing sports stars ?!!

Born in Bretheron, went to school in Croston - Bishop Rawstorne High School. Interestingly Steve Walsh, the former Leicester City Scout, now at Everton, was a P.E. teqcher at the same school.

I had the honour of Skiing with Konrad Bartlelski when he was an ambassador for Club Mark Warner, when I went on one of their chalet ski holidays in the 80's. He was a very down to Earth and friendly bloke and I'm sure my skiing improved, following in his tracks down the mountain off piste. he came over for a photo shoot and I'm afraid i might have spoiled it, because I had bleached my hair just before the holiday.

This achievement by Dave Ryding is absolutely amazing, how I wish I could have been a good skier and done this sort thing. At least I've been skiing, it really is a luxury holiday.

I still watch Ski Sunday sporadically and saw his run. Brilliant sporting moment.
