I won't name anybody, there were too many.
The saddest thing about reading this thread is the dross we had to endure in them dark days.
We never sold a player upwards after Steven, Laws, Phelan, Hamilton, et al, were shipped out.
The name players were mainly stealing a final salary before they hung their boots up.
The young players just weren't good enough even for the lower reaches.
Never forget and pray it never returns.

Dane Richards was an absolute joke. Came on, did about 20 minutes, looked appalling, then hooked and never seen again. Comedy really!
I too was at that match against Orient away in the late 80's ('89?) and when I saw David Jones play I knew a turn around in our fortunes was a long, long way off as we really were scraping the barrel! And yes they beat us 3-0.
As others have said though I think mention of Mumby for one is very harsh as he was decent at that level imo and Jakub, despite his alleged remarks about the fans actually played a big part in the '92 promotion and was again half decent.

Beat me to it. Was it the Hereford game?
Wasn't too impressed with Kendall at Blackpool nor for that matter David Williams....and I don't think Wayne Russell was perfect.

For regular keeper....Williams worst for me followed by Joe Neenan....although I didn't think Neenan was our biggest problem back them.

At the end of the Blackpool game i distinctly remember an arguement with Kendall and a fan where the words "if you turn up at Turf Moor next week Kendall i'll shoot you with my shotgun" .... (swear words have been omitted).

Surprised no one's mentioned Peter Hampton. he could have the number 3 shirt any day for me. But hang on , Brian Easton would be trying to rip it off him.

Burnley v Hereford United, 24 January 1987. The team who played on this day. TRULY AWFUL. If anyone raises me, I will call them.

Agreed, at a time when we had no-one who could actually play football (i.e. control it, pass it, move with it) Adrian Randall was the nearest we had. Yes he was lazy which is why he played for us not further up the pyramid.

Did we have the slowest pair of full backs ever with Hampton on the left and Geoff Palmer on the right? And as poor as Hampton was, we plumbed new depths when Darren Heesom played. As for Tony's comments on keepers (and we will never agree on this) Joe Neenan was a considerable step up from Roger Hansbury in that he occasionally caught a cross and saved the odd shot. Outside of the odd game names mentioned, Hansbury was the worst keeper i have seen in our colours. See Cambridge away, outside the ground and Roger is playing for Cambridge. My comment that we stood a fair chance against him stood up, with Burnley being 4-0 up at half time.

Perhaps not Championship standard but Alex McDonald was a decent young footballer in his short time at Burnley.
Has played many years in the lower divisions.
Maybe someone on here knows if he's still playing and where he is now.

In the period 85-7 you could have put together a better XI from a random selection of those on the terraces.

someone said these threads are disrespectful above, no they're not.
Even now with the current squad fans are entitled to have a voice about the Burnley players performances, (and they do )
But in those dark days when hardly anyone was going on and we were truly **** !!! then there is nothing wrong in naming names. That period when stan publicy outed players who he said would never pull on the clubs colours again, how do you think it made the loyal fans feel ? it was a good thing in my view. They were on good money and looked as if they couldn't give a stuff about us, genuinley inept and lacked effort for the cause.
Fans travelled and paid to witness that. Supporters should be free to say so too. Nobody is saying its ok to just rubbish a man because he had an off day, but there is a marked difference sometimes.

Sort of embarrassing, this thread. I spent some time on the committee of a non-league club, and was club secretary for a period and soon learned that slagging players off (even long after they have retired) for being poor is just not on if they have put in their best efforts (or something close too it). They may read some of this. Besides. it's the sort of lack-of-class thing that Liverpool and Chelsea fans do with their "divine-right" attitudes, and we are better than that.
Players that are "Non-triers" are different, and I'm glad to see a few others have made the distinction.
There are a few on this list that I've every respect for. What the F is Monno doing on it for example? A genuine guy that gave his best for the club.

Non-league is one thing, but top-level football is another. As I've stated before, I've become quite involved with a non-league club in the Bristol area. They're going up this year, (from the 9th to the 8th level), to join Ashley Barnes' old club, Paulton Rovers. It's all quite exciting for them, but I always question the sustainability. When your average "crowd" is 80 die-hards, how long can you expect to last? Their top scorer was brought in from Truro City this year, but I don't see him staying. Because they're tied in with a social club, which really sustains the club, and don't have an owner, per se, they should be all right, but it might backfire in the long run.

Adi Randall was clearly a good player who put in some excellent performances, but just not often or consistently enough. It appeared at the time (and since) that had rather a lack of the self discipline required to train hard and stay fit and it prevented him playing higher up and meant he never reached his full potential even with us. Frank Casper was near the end of his tether, and we lost 3 - 1 away at Scarborough the following week & that was Frank done. Jimmy Mullen takes over, wins 9 League games on the trot, gets the Gig on a permanent basis and two promotions in three seasons follow...

One observation, Mike Conroy scored 26 goals in 45 League and Cup appearances that season, all as a starter. Fair play to him, but I watched every home and many away games that season, and someone like Andy Payton would have probably netted 40+, with the chances created.. this is not untypical of home games that season, & we won 4 - 1...

Thanks for sharing that link, it's a long time since I've watched those highlights! We should have won that game by about 10 but it showed why we were so entertaining to watch that season. It's still one of the best Burnley sides I've ever seen; purely for the attacking manner in which we played.

Just on these highlights you see Conroy, Francis, Harper, Lancashire and Randall, and that's without mentioning Eli and Painter also. We had so many decent attacking options. We were a threat from all over the pitch as well as at set pieces with Davis and Pender. Tremendous team. We still haven't replaced John Deary though ha ha!!
