Chakwana & Wood have both done really well this season in terms of goalscoring although, of course, nothing like the Fletcher, Gilchrist, McCartan seasons in recent years.

Had a medical appointment yesterday so wasn't able to go to the game. My next youth game likely to be a week on Saturday.

I know winning is not the be all and end all at this level, it is all about player development, but it is very refreshing to see as many positive results as we have this season.

The Gawthorpe redevelopment is nothing more than providing the facilities to enable us to step up from EPPP Cat 3 to Cat 2. Without those facilities we can't do it. There's more to it than that though, it is just one small part of us being able to move up.

Should we get EPPP CAt 2 then we will be in a competitive league at both U18 and U23 level. Currently that league includes Barnsley, Bolton, Birmingham, Coventry, Crewe, Huddersfield, Hull, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.

I was told last week that the audit had taken place so I presume we are just now awaiting news of whether we've got the step up.

Not only U18 & U23 level, if we do get it then our younger teams will also be able to play against both Cat 1 and Cat 2 clubs which they currently cannot do.

We've been a long way behind for years. With the old academy system we were just a centre of excellence because of our facilities which really were very poor. We wasted money in 2011/12 by spending it in the wrong areas. This time we've got it very much right, certainly in terms of the facilities, and hopefully so with the newly staffed academy. We can't expect too much, if any, real output from the academy initially. It will take years to repair the damage done over the last five years.
