Re: The Stoops Estate
Like most old estates with a name, a lot of it is history now.
There's probably still some bell ends about, but if you get on with the right people in places you're usually fine.
The Rezo in Rhyl used to be so bad the police were forbidden to patrol on foot and could only patrol in cars/vans so long as there were a minimum of two officers.
Nowadays its a lot calmer because the old divs have either moved, passed away or are to old to be divs.

Dare I say that Stoops seems to have improved significantly since a lot of Poles,Ukrainians etc have moved onto the estate?
(Might just be coincidental of course).

No.
It's improved because some of the nutters who used to be there have been moved out to all areas in Pendle.
Let Nelson, Brierfield and Padiham deal with them.

Re: The Stoops Estate
So has the large Eastern European community up there caused a lot of problems then? My understanding is that it's all relatively trouble-free nowadays, and when I go up there to visit a family, I feel quite comfortable.Bin Ont Turf wrote:No.

Probably.
If you get large numbers of different people in one area there's always going to be problems, such is human nature.
Any road I'm not on about that. long before the Eastern Europeans turned up a lot of the nutters were moved out and were settled in other towns in Burnley and Pendle.
We're talking about 10 to 15 years ago here.
The Stoops has gradually been declining in (proper) nutters for quite a while now.

Only when dealing with scumbags. It was a very informative part of my life which made me realise that it was much better to move up and away than remain in the area.

Live on cog Lane, it's fine and has been for at least 15 years.
Only one pole I know if on the street and he's lived here about 2 years. So if it's because of him he must have a time machine.

The trouble up that area of town was around 1990-91 ish wasn't it? That going up for 30 years ago...wow, times flies.
In response to the hill troll, I think Shadsworth has had far more recent problems, hence the Panorama documentary a few years ago. Was it 2012?

Not that bad an area now, it does still have its scrotes but where doesn't most annoying thing is the muppets on field bikes flying around when the weather improves that said the police are cracking down on that.

Re: The Stoops Estate
I've always given Stoops a wide berth, partly due to its reputation and partly due to never having a reason to ever go there but I'd consider giving Brunshaw the award for area that has declined the most since the turn of the millennium. It seems to have coincided with the regeneration of Burnley Wood, where I'm currently lodging with a mate in one of the new builds and it's so much of an improvement on 10-15 years ago when I would have thought twice about even walking through. I'm guessing a lot of the bad eggs from the old Burnley Wood have moved into Brunshaw, hence the current issues up there.
Re: The Stoops Estate
I was brought up in Stoneyholme in the 60s. Best part of Burnley then IMO. As has been said, a total no-go zone now. I wouldn't even drive through it. My parents were forced out of Stoneyholme in the early 80s through intimidation. All the protagonists on the baby spitting thread should have talked to my late dad. He could have told them what it was really like.

Re: The Stoops Estate
I remember there was a lad from Stoneyholme at Giggleswick in the 70's; little bloke but hard as nails. My aunt was distraught when her daughter moved in with a boyfriend in Stoneyholme.
Re: The Stoops Estate
Most areas in Burnley have their share of scroats - and Stoops definitely does. The most notorious family of car thieves in Burnley lives in Stoops.
Of course in all these areas there are good people aswell as bad. In terms of which area is the worst in Burnley I don't think having a debate about this is going to help as it's all down to personal experience. As can be seen on this thread you have people who were born in Stoops or live there now saying it's absolutely fine (for them) and then you have people who have had their cars stolen from a family who has being doing this for years and live on the estate.
I grew up at top of Cog Lane / Rossie Road area and we used to knock about sometimes in Bleak House - and "bleakies" were rough but it was a poor area with lots of council housing - I can't remember what exactly separated Bleak House from Stoops but I know we never went down Stoops as that was a whole different level of poverty....and you would definitely get a kick in down there.
That said a good kick from a few Stoops lads would be a pleasant day out compared to what they get up to these days.

Lived near Stoops Estate as a lad (off Coal Clough Lane between Scott Park and Cog Lane).
Had a few runs in due to associations with friends up Rosehill, standard teenager stuff.

About 10 years ago I worked just off stoops for quite a few months and never seen anything untoward (during the day) but when we moved on to Burnley Wood that was a whole different ball game. It made Moss Side look like Beverley Hills.

Re: The Stoops Estate
Not too long ago my nephew moved onto Coal Clough Lane. Four lads walked into their house uninvited, made threats and stole his motorbike. They were off Stoops. Money had to be paid to retrieve said bike. Salt of the earth.
Re: The Stoops Estate
I lived on Stoops for years. My mum and dad both lived there until they died. I played football on Cherry Fold with lads from Bleak House, Hargher Clough Estate and Accy Road.
We had no bother really. Nobody had anything so I suppose there was nothing to steal. There was the odd fight because we stuck up for ourselves, but they were fair fist fights.
I remember flying back from holiday when the riots were happening and the plane showed a video of the main news from the last 2 weeks. It showed the riots, and my eldest lad shouted "dad, grandma's house is on the telly!" I looked up and a car was on fire outside our house. That was slightly embarrassing.
Even after that, once everything calmed down I still think it was ok. We never had any problems and my mum and dad loved it.
I go to the dentist on Venice Avenue and it always seems ok driving through the old place. Mind you some of the crew that drank on Accy Road were hard as nails, so maybe thats why it was trouble free most of the time. Some great footballers came from Stoops as well. At least 3 were signed on for professional clubs, didn't quite make it and went on to play semi pro.

Re: The Stoops Estate
Stoops in the 60s and 70s was great, most worked and looked after their own not so sure now as i don't go near, drank on accrington road most of the 80s and the place was full of characters a lot now sadly not here, a few still live on the stoops but a lot i know are spread all over burnley now.
Re: The Stoops Estate
Lived on Stoops for a number of years in the late sixties and all of the seventies and early eighties. When we moved on there at first and for at least ten years it was wonderful, great neighbours, who's got the best garden competitions (honestly) people who worked hard as my mum and dad did and grew veg in gardens, mowed lawns, swept the pavement in front of your house, there was always a few problems on Florence and Tiber but nothing much. Then Burnley council the bastions of socialism and looking after working class people decided that Stoops needed anti social families from other estates all in one area so they chose Stoops, the F***ing sniveling sociology A level London centric tw@ts who influenced and took over the party that was built to look after working people inflicted vermin on working people and supported their right to be vermin, didnt matter that an all night party made you knackered at work through lack of sleep from your "neighbour" what mattered more was their right of expression and their right to breed and breed and breed more labour voters paid for by your taxes to subsidise their decision to have annuver kid cos Daz bought them a bacardi and coke in the Gretna.
Stoops was wonderful and I have happy memories until labour lost its true purpose and inflicted social engineering on it (but not obviously where the labour elite live)

Sandwiched in between the estates was Hargher Estate which was where it went off in the 80's.
