Last Tram to Turf Moor

Anyone know the last time trams ran past Turf Moor?
This photo shows that there was a branch line into the Cricket ground.
Fascinating pic.

There's an article by a Dr. Michael Harrison, 'A Brief History of Transport' which says the line past the Turf was laid in 1926 (presumably the subject of the photo). The article goes on to say that it was short lived as the last tram to Towneley and Brunshaw was October 1934. Last tram in Burnley apparently was 1935.

Imagine them doing this sort of work now. Everything would be cordoned off, there would have to be temporary traffic lights that kept you waiting for far too long, and someone would of run off with that wheelbarrow as soon as someone's back was turned.

Couple more here which I believe were taken at the same time. Both are of the traffic light corner, one from outside the cricket ground and one from inside.

That brought back memories. My dad used to work that turnstile on matchdays and he would send me round the ground selling penny scorecards.

Under the letter s of the sign (Parkinson's) you can see the outline of stone mileage sign, which was recovered and then built into present wall.

If you mean round the corner from where the shop is, you're right. The Cricketers was at 53 Anne Street and until it closed it was the 'media' centre, in the days when that meant strictly The Press. It was such s centre because the pub allowed the press lads to phone their after-match pieces to their respective papers from the pub's phone.

look closely at the backs of the benches: they're old school desktops. the groove running near the top is a pen rest and there are five holes in each, which would have held the inkwells. A piece of local history.

a slight detour, if you don't mind - those pictures of the straight line tram tracks, the buildings, the men's clothing and the greyness remind me of this excellent video which shows San Francisco 111 years ago, one year before the famous earthquake..one of my favourite pieces from YT..

- as some one describes....'I am voting this my favourite clip i have seen on you-tube so far.......i view it every day.
the old horse and carts mixing it with the new technology automobiles.....how there seems to be no road rules and yet no crashes....how close the cars pass in front of the tram without really knowing what is on the other side....how people stop in the middle of the street to look at the camera.....the young paper boys....the one that plays with the tram....the dude on the white horse......the keystone cop with his truncheon.....the horse and cart with the guy in a big coat that dawdles in front of the tram......the lady getting on the tram......the 5 men in their new auto going out for a drive.......and the young kids who hang on to the back of their car.....how the music fits in so well with the pictures......THANKYOU!

That isn't a branch into the cricket ground. It was double track (presumably they needed to finish one side before digging up the other side too) and headed off up Brunshaw Rd to Worsthorne. The points are for a turn-back so trams could just go from the town centre to Turf Moor and return.

Re the Cricketers, it wasn't just the press who used the pub on match days. 2 Burnley players Mather and Atwell did pop in for a drink before some games. Joe one of, if not the last landlord there then took over the other Cricketers pub on Lowerhouse Lane. Ashpelted into the floor surface of Anne St pub was a 2 shilling coin (10p) which I think every kid in the area tried to remove at some time.

I can't help but feel it would be a fantastic attraction to have trams running once again, certain routes in the Burnley area. The lines are still there under the tarmac in many areas. Given how the technology for electric cars has advanced, maybe this could be achieved without the need for overhead lines.

Great pics. I used that Cricket Ground entrance on many many occasions. Fulledge was a great place to live as a kid. Access to Townley Park, Fulledge Rec and Turf Moor for both cricket and football and all within walking distance. Thanks for posting pics.

Just realised that the photo was taken on a match day. That was the only time the flag flew other than at half mast following the death of anyone connected to the club.

Looks like something from the Moulin Rouge. Might be the first and last time Burnley and Paris were ever confused with each other.

"stone mileage sign" is an Americanism for "milestone"

The flag mast is shown flying at the corner of the stand and from memory in my early lifetime, it was in the middle of the same stand. I recall the light blue 59/60 League Champions flag flying all the season after. Sadly it had started to tear and looked the worse for wear. Does anyone know what happened to it ?.

I must say that the old stand even from a distance looks much grander and more imposing than the existing BLS. Shame they knocked it down.

I think the old Brunshaw Road stand HAD to be torn down, just before it collapsed. Something about twisted girders. If you anything about engineering, you know that that's not good.
