What if I said I didn't kill someone on Wednesday but on Thursday I said I did? Have I lied or just changed my mind?

Not at all. TM made it pretty clear that she was going to fight the election on the Brexit card in order to increase her majority. It would appear that it was you that wasn't listening if you missed that.RingoMcCartney wrote:I take it you missed the speech!!!?

Don't they still include 16- and 17-year-olds on the forms you fill in each year? Then when their 18th birthday comoes along, they're automatically included?nil_desperandum wrote:When will the deadline be for young people to join the electoral roll? Many who would be keen to vote will not be registered as yet, and would have been under no pressure to do so due to the Fixed term Parliament Act.
Six weeks is not very long.

Funny, coz everything that was ever said in the referendum by the remain side that changed was branded a lie.dsr wrote:This isn't a lie. If you say one thing in March and then in April say you've changed your mind, that's a change of mind, not a lie.

Same with stuff said by the Brexit camp.martin_p wrote:Funny, coz everything that was ever said in the referendum by the remain side that changed was branded a lie.
Re: Downing St Press Conference
That depends on when you killed them. Let's face it, if changing your mind constitutes a lie, then we all lie a lot. For example, someone asks you if you're going to Bournemouth and you say no. Then someone offers you a ticket and a free ride - do you change your mind and go, or do you say "I cannot tell a lie" and turn it down?ClaretAndJew wrote:What if I said I didn't kill someone on Wednesday but on Thursday I said I did? Interesting that on a day Corbyn shows perhaps that he might step down due to making 'too many mistakes to mention', this happens. He won't have time to go. A disaster for the Labour Party. Thanks a bunch, Ed Miliband. Such a great legacy you left.

Examples?martin_p wrote:Funny, coz everything that was ever said in the referendum by the remain side that changed was branded a lie.
The one that I thought was a blatant lie, was the one by Cameron saying he would stay on as PM if Brexit won. Since he resigned at 8 am, about three and a half hours after the result, he either changed his mind very quickly, or else he lied. Most of the other stuff, about the financial disaster and the emergency budget, may have been a lie, or may have been nothing more than blind unreasoning panic (genuinely believed) by Osborne and Cameron.

I suppose it depends what we're comfortable having.
A PM who lies or a PM who changes her mind a lot.

I wouldn't see it as a lie - I was just pointing out that things have obviously changed somewhat since making that statement in March. Nothing wrong with changing your mind, nothing wrong with zig-zagging to the goal as long as you make it there.
They need to clear out all the clowns who will make the Brexit process even more difficult than it already will be.
If the 48% who voted remain all, god forbid, went and voted LibDem....

e.g. If your parents live in Burnley but you are student in (e.g.) London, then you have to register and vote in London don't you?
[Anyway - just checked. The deadline for registering for the May 4th elections was last week, so it would suggest that you will have to register by about May 20th].

Ok I'll be charitable, two massive 'changes of mind' I less than 12 months, one on Brexit, one on the election. How is it possible to believe a word she says when she 'changes her mind' so fundamentally so frequently?

Its only going to go one way.
First, if you want Brexit, you have to vote Conservative to guarantee it
Second, if you don't want Brexit, then you are going to have vote tactically to stop it
I just can't see enough Lab/Lib Dem/Green voters doing 2), while I can see UKIP getting wiped out in blue areas, but taking votes from Lab in red areas.

That's politics martin, you can move with the times, react to events, look at polls and, god forbid, listen to the electorate. Or you can preach an unpopular minority view as though it's gospel and insist that you're right and everyone else is wrong.martin_p wrote:Ok I'll be charitable, two massive 'changes of mind' I less than 12 months, one on Brexit, one on the election. We'll see how the two approaches pan out on June 8th.

I think the SNP might remind here that she felt the Scots had had enough of voting, nothing like convenience to change your minds.
She has lost a big chunk of her credibility, if she can wobble now what will she be like in negotiations.

They'd be discredited almost instantly.
The only way that this blows up in TM face is if Lib Dems/SNP/remainer Labs have enough to stop her having a majority, which relies on millions and millions of voters voting tactically (included a hell of a lot of Conservatives)
Its all down to just how strong the remainers really are.

Jesus..who to vote for...?
I believe in Brexit, but an Election is not about a single issue.
I couldn't vote Conservative if I lived until 100.
Labour normally but tragic Corbyn will lose by a mile plus the Brexit stuff..[some Labour policies are fine, tho' he is not]
UKIP / Greens - No
Liberal Democrats - a badly led bunch of 'no hope' chancers who would sell their granny if they could get a ministerial Renault Clio out of it...[tho' they may do quite well in any Election, at least in terms of votes, if not seats..a resurgence for them possibly, God forbid]
My vote is up for grabs, haven't got a clue..?
This is from this morning..[before the announcement]
yougov -
C = 44
L = 23
Lib Dems = 12
UKIP = 10
It's gonna be interesting, and it will get nasty.

The big opportunity for the Lib Dems, Jeremy will be staying on after any ways until the 5% ruling gets through, the hierarchy will say they don't want to make the same mistake as with Ed. The make-up of the Labour Party might indeed favour the left after the election

May made it crystal clear that the illiberal antiDemocrats lead by Tiny Tim, and other Remoaners were doing their upmost to try and thwart and obstruct the Will of the People.nil_desperandum wrote:Not at all. It was in her opening lines.
You perceive that how ever you like.
I see it as her strengthening her hand and slamming down the chipper jack in boxes like Tiny Tim, once and for all . Till brexit is done.
The speech was a bit like a football game. I saw it one way. You're determined to see it another.
The only down side for me is that surrender chimp Farron will get more air time.
Re: Downing St Press Conference
It's a clever move from May, as much as I hate to give her any credit, but the fact is Labour and the Lib Dems have never been as unpopular so the Tories should walk a general election. I have major concerns if they do though. It'll mean bye bye to the NHS and undoubtedly see the continuation of the Tories lining the pockets of their rich benefactors. If you're working class or worse this government is going to make it very difficult for you to live even a half decent life!!

Re: Downing St Press Conference
I've voted in a lot of General Elections by now and never voted Tory. I think, though, that this is a good decision & hope parliament approves.
Some high profile names have been giving it the "you're not an elected PM" + there are a lot of voices trying to ignore/illegitimatise the Brexit poll result. If (highly likely) the Government gets an increased majority, these criticisms become pretty much invalid and we can get on with doing what has been voted for and move the country forward.
I have a lifelong aversion to voting Tory but would seriously consider doing so here- just to try and shut up the naysayers who seem intent on trying to pull the country (and it's people) down because a vote has not gone their way.

It will be really interesting to see how many people facing your genuine dilemma will put Brexit before the NHS, jobs, worker's rights and their traditional voting pattern.LeadBelly wrote:I've voted in a lot of General Elections by now and never voted Tory. Also interesting to see how many life-long but "remain leaning" Tories will bite the bullet and vote Lib Dem. I'm sure May will get a majority, but I think there will be some interesting results in some seats.

So the fixed-term act means nothing to our MP. I hope the HoC tells her where to go and I says this as someone who doesn't really care too much for any of the three/four main parties or their leaders.
