Canal walk behind Tesco Burnley

I was wondering if any of you guys on here could help me,going towards the Turf where does the canal walk go to

Over the Culvert and then carries on to edge of Thompsons park.

It goes to Leeds?

I might be wrong, but I don't think you can get off until Thompson Park, then make your way to the Turf from there. There is the path down between Tesco and Gala Bingo but you might as well not bother walking on the towpath if you're coming off there.

We are looking for walks to do with the dogs as we are on holiday next week,are there any pubs on route? Is it a decent walk Longside or bfc crazy?

If you get on near Tesco and head down the straight mile to Thompson Park, you can then walk round the park. I would think you can probably walk as far as you want in that direction, other than the tunnel (which is the other way) I don't think there will be anything preventing you from walking along the tow path.

1. Where about you are staying (town/nearby village)
2. Fitness level of you and your dog.
3. Distance/time you want to walk for

Im in my sixties the wife is in her late fifties,I suppose our two dogs are our equivalent age we are pretty fit,we live in Rossendale and find it hard as its a valley and everywhere you walk is up a massive hill,my wife has had both her knees replaced and is looking to build up her strength again,just thought the canal walk would be very flat ?

Dogs are not allowed in Thompson Park if you were thinking of doing that, unfortunately.

The canal goes round the park and dogs are allowed there.

the walk towards leeds isnt actually too bad once you get to reedley and beyond especially in summer. I do it a lot in the other direction you have to get off at gannow not sure where you get back on actually.

on the leeds route ive walked as far as skipton and there are some very nice parts. Surprisngly little on the way in way of shops and pubs but that could be a good thing. Theres a nice cafe at the tunnel and the walk round the tunnel is actually nice. Then the pub at Salterforth (The Anchor) is decent enough with good beer and homemade pies.

Personally like any walk around Pendle. Hurstwood, up the windmills and if you are after a longer walk towards Hebden Bridge back through Tod is decent.

You can bypass the park I nearly did that the other day but for some reason didnt. Glad I didnt as I saw a deer in Thompsons Park was just gutted I didnt have my proper camera with me.

You could always start at Inn on the Wharf and then walk around along the canal past where Tesco is. Then have a walk around to the park.

OK. Park car just down from the Mitre. Walk along canal bank carefully managing to avoid eye contact with Tyson the pitbull. Stop off at Innontwarf for a pint. Carry on after to the straight mile and there are paths down to the culvert to the Turf, if you're going on the match.

or. park car at Barden Bridge and walk to Nelson or back to Thomson park, plus there's the cafe at Barden for the boaters.

You can come off the canal before Thompson park and have a drink in the Queen Vic (actually on the canal but other side from towpath). You can sit outside with the dogs if a nice day.

Suggestion - park at Singing Ringing Tree and follow the limers way over to Clowbridge reservoir. Fairly flat, couple of interesting features along the way. After walk pubs any you fancy. Or park at Towneley Hall and walk around the hall grounds. Visit the garden centre (has a tea room) the hall (tea room) and then across from main entrance Rifle volunteers pub. Turf not far and you could pop in and buy a replica shirt! Or Canal walk like Quicken above suggests above come off at Thompsons Park Queen Vic pub above it. Then walk back along straight mile to Tescos.

I usually stay in the Holiday Inn these days, pre matches.....walk across the hotel car park, and go through the gap in the hedge.

Down the steps to the canal bank, and walk towards town.

- fifteen minutes later walk in the back door of the 'Inn on the Wharf' and order a pint...brilliant.

I have stayed at the Holiday Inn. There is a proper entrance just up from there and you walk just as Hampstead says. Bit of early green then some new build and some great but derelict buildings, ideal for uplift. Then the Inn ot Wharf at the Weavers Triangle. Keep walking. Bit scrappy until you turn left into the straight mile. Pennines and Turf Moor to the right and Tesco and Burnley to your left. Stunning. You can get down by Tescos or carry on. Next pub probably the Brewers Fayre at Premier inn site. Recommend the walk.

Right I'm going to give this walk a try as I'm on holiday soon,where can I pick this canal walk up out of Burnley,want to avoid the chavs and their Rottweilers?

you can of course take your dog on the towpath , the area aftet thompson park is a right old eyesore, filth, graffiti, litter strewn. terrible really.
Once past that bit, it improves greatly. Leeds Liverpool is a great canal, but bits of it through the towns are shockingly bad. Blackburn is similar unfortunately. Contrast it to the stretch over at Foulridge where its beautiful.

I often think what those narrowboat holidaymakers would make of the state of it around here.
They sit at home watching timothy west and prunella scales, and decide to give it a go, then they float along the open sewer bits around north east lancs, colliding with supermarket trolleys and islands of fast food packaging floating about on the surface.
Probably shove it into top gear and whoooosh !!! away as fast as the barge can go. shame really.

If you get as far as the old Bardeen Mill site there used to be a nice cafe there (Kingfisher?) don't know if it's still theee.

Steve I was going to post about foulridge...I cycle the canal a lot...anywhere from barrowford towards foulridge is much nicer than nelson to blackburn side...your choice for coffee/lunch is cafe cargo at side of canal in foulridge or alternatively ( and my recommendation ) go to the hare and hounds for lunch...at the side of the road in centre of foulridge...they have a very reasonable menu and if you got the fish n chips you wouldnt be disappointed...make sure you have an appetite though...utc.
