Purged the wesite data from my phone then went back to the forum - this is the list of URLs that populated my phone from the home page of The Bee Hole End

UTC popup trying to make me download an app

Post by Walton » Tue May 23, 2017 4:07 pm

Just had this popup when typing out a post:

I'm not a fan of websites forcing potentially dangerous downloads onto me.

Has anyone else had this?

Please can the mods deal with it?

I just got this.

Hope everybody has their security settings set accordingly to avoid installing apps from unknown sources.

This site is getting just as bad as Clarets Mad was , who knows what's in that apk :-(

Unfortunately no, the problem has been passed on to DiBradio and he will deal with it when he can.

Find it very difficult to believe anyone would post that given the problems encountered on that site with all the ads.

I too had the 'apk' warning, that will obviously only be affecting Android users.

All the issues could be solved by not using a third party ad provider. The adds provided by UTCMEDIA (based in France?!) should be enough.

If you'd just been to a site that tried to sneakily download an unknown app then you may feel differently.

I'm sure you'll sort it but it's quite disconcerting.

I won't feel differently at all - I had to put up with the mess that was Clarets Mad for some considerable time when they were pushing dodgy ads onto the site and the likes. We are working hard to try and keep things as good as they can and to be honest I find it quite insulting, given all our efforts, to read your comment.

I've added the list of urls indicated to the banned list.
Has it made a difference?

I had read that he has now blocked some URLs - I was trying to understand why he had to block the URLs in the first place - i.e. was it something to do with the other ads run, the ad network you use or is it a virus of some sort?

clarethomer, we have ads server by an ad network and I've informed them of the problem with the urls listed on this thread. I've had a confirmation that they're on their banned list now so should no longer appear on the site once the cache's are cleared. Unfortunately it seems that the internet ad market is full of sneaky advertisers who put dodgy code into their ads to get pop up ads on the cheap.
As for our own local ads I'd rather have just those but we don't get enough advertisers to cover the costs of the site. The trouble is we're too small time to employ anyone to sell our advertising space and we'd need to a lot of cold calling which I just don't have enough time to do. If anyone has a few hours to spare then I'd be delighted to have the help on that score.

I don't see what's insulting about it at all.

Using the website on my phone has become completely impossible, I never had issues as bad as this whilst using the old site.

Since I put up my original post on Friday, whatever anyone has done to try and put a stop to it has worked for me. I can now use the site without being bombarded adverts and pornographic screen shots - and for that I thank you.

You were one of the lucky ones then.
CM became unusable for a lot of people and was one of the reasons for creating UTC

Likewise, I've had no further issues with redirects

I've had more problems on UTC than I ever did on CM.

That is unfair Walton

I personnally have had barely any problems worth mentioning, for some reason this seems to be platform dependant mine is windows mobile by the way. On Clarets Mad it was indiscriminate and whilst no where near as bad now on clarets mad it is still the same they are indiscriminate and intrusive. The ads were constant and with no desire to resolve at least on this board they do try to resolve it and you get an indication of it happening. We all know there will be issues with this and have from the start but there is also the desire to get the right blend of necessary adverts but none intrusive which is admirable.

It's not unfair, it's my experience. There have been numerous threads on here reporting the problems.

They get sorted for a week or two, and then they start again. Mobile viewing of UTC is unsafe.

Haven't noticed any issues today, so the filters must have worked. Thank you.

I only view on mobile and on mine it isn't unsafe or certainly i haven't had a problem on mine. I'm not sure why but it is Platform specific and iPhone mainly.

I've just made a change which takes out one of the ad networks which appears to have been causing the problem. Any difference?
