U2 at Twickenham..

Post by hampsteadclaret » Sun Jul 09, 2017 10:35 am

A mate of mine has kindly offered me a ticket for the show later on today; High Flying Birds are opening up.

Did anyone go yesterday, was it a good effort?

We will have a little wander around Richmond /Twickenham this afternoon, 'preparing' to be entertained.

* Before you start.. I am aware that U2 [and Bono] are not loved by everyone... :o 8-)

I've seen reports that it's a very good show and lets be honest it should be a brilliant show.

I had tickets tonight and could not go. Please post a report or footage if you can. Might be one of the last chances to see U2 live.

Plenty of footage on you tube if you search joshua tree tour 2017.
Big fan up to the pop album. Last saw them at Leeds on the pop tour, supported by the lightening seeds who were very good too.
Not much into their later stuff. Bono no longer has the enthusiasm, like he's simply going through the motions these days.
Also on you tube is lots of footage from the early 80's, brilliant.

It was excellent right from 6.30 when Noel Gallagher came on till around the 10.30 finish.

As for Bono "going through the motions" I'd certainly disagree with that.

More the 80s U2 for me to be honest but I imagine they will still be brilliant live.

As it is the Joshua Tree tour they played that album in its entirety, with most of the stuff played being from the 80s.

An outstanding gig in my eyes, and talking to people last night and this morning they agreed.

Are they calling it a day?

Remember being told to get out to see the stones in '84 as they wouldn't be around much longer.....

Saw the original Joshua tree tour. Caught them at Cardiff Arms Park, and Wembley. They were absolutely superb. Its a good album, still play it today.

I saw them at Twickenham 12 years ago on the Vertigo tour. Superb as a band but i have no time for a multi millionaire standing on a stage urging people to donate money to what ever cause. The political ranting took something away from an otherwise excellent gig.

I've lost interest in them since the Zoo tour when I had a seat towards the side of the stage and could see all of the backstage area. When they came off stage they were greeted by medics, then wrapped in dressing gowns then wrapped in foil sheets. I just find them pretentious

Saw them on the Unforgetable Fire tour when they were epic.

Sounds like a Stiff Little Fingers gig. Jake burns is just the same. Disappointing really. There for the music. If I want to be preached at by a numpty without a clue, I'd stay in.

Saw them at Elland Road on the original Joshua Tree tour supported by The Pretenders.

Still haven't forgiven them for not playing Where The Streets Have No Name.

It must be the only gig they played after the release of the album where they didn't perform it.

Read a review on BBC website, said they were brilliant. All the old faves, then Joshua tree then other faves and finished with a new song, on for two and half hours. Very jealous, enjoy!

I read the thread title and thought....... that won't be much of a spectacle, under 2's playing rugby.

Quite literally I wouldn't cross the road to see U2.....and indeed I haven't again tonight. However, by opening the window I can hear them loud and clear.

All the hits at the start, and then at the end. Some mumbo-jumbo in between!!

Not a bad set list, with a massive encore. Can`t really spot the mumbo jumbo.

I will just add a little to what others have said on this thread already.

it was an absolutely wonderful show last night at Twickenham - third time I've seen them, including the first 'Joshua Tree' tour, 30 years ago at Wembley Stadium, when we were fans on the pitch. I was sat way up in the East Stand last night, with a good view of the main stage, and the other elongated stage which went 50 metres into the crowd on the pitch. I think U2 did 24 songs including some of their biggest songs and the whole of 'The Joshua Tree' - they could not have put more into it, and they were clearly enjoying themselves. Bono kept the sermonising to a minimum [the pictorial/video section about 'women who have made a contribution' was excellent]. The poster above who said..

'Bono no longer has the enthusiasm, like he's simply going through the motions these days..' well, I really could not disagree more..still one of rock's best front men for me'. That 75,000 audience went home happy.

High Flying Birds had opened the show at 6.25 pm and did a top job - Noel was up for it. Twickenham worked well as a venue, we had some drinks in the afternoon in nearby sunny Richmond.

22..'mumbo jumbo'...what? :? :o

The U2 Tour is sold out and continues in the next twelve days in cavernous stadiums in Berlin, Rome, Barcelona and one show at home in Croke Park, Dublin. I would say, see them if you get chance, they won't tour for ever and at some point they will dive in for their pensions.

rock trivia...biggest grossing rock music tour ever is...' U2 – U2 360° Tour – $736,421,584'

Lots of concert reviews online - this is the Independent, this morning.

Though I could hear U2 - who sounded decent enough - couldn't really work out what was going on between songs. Perhaps mumbo jumbo is a bit harsh......just couldn't work out what was being said.

Don't really care either, though pleased that those that attended enjoyed the concert(s) and wonderful location.
