Our league record from mid-70s speaks for itself. I never "dared to dream" we'd be back in the "top division" - and, with an opportunity to build a track record in the Premier League.

My dad said he'd never go on the Turf again when Jimmy Mac was sold.
I felt the same when Dobbo went.
Neither of us kept it up for long.
Can't remember how many games my dad missed.
I missed one.

It's certainly true that our demise began with the sale of Dobbo and accelerated with sale of Taffy.

Trevor Steven and Billy Hamilton were devastating for me. One that also hurt as much was a great young Claret who gave 100% every week and was a very very good player and that man was Brian Laws.

If I remember correctly Taffy came back shortly afterwards and helped to absolutely annihilate us as Derby won 5-1? (ish) and effectively won the title.

Wasn't that when they stuffed us at the Baseball Ground?

They did put 5 past us on the Turf too.
But don't remember Taff playing in that one.
Lol
I'm the same. Get old games mixed up.
But do remember dreading playing Derby back then. Just couldn't get a win.

Northampton wasn't it? Pretty sure Forest wouldn't let him go. Kept goal in a cup final for them not long after.

Nicky Walker was a long way ahead of 4th division standard.

Ted McMinn. Tin man hurt me with the nature of his exit.

Honourable mention for Glen Little, though.

Taffy soaring down the left wing with the Longside roaring him on was an experience to behold.

Geoff Nulty was the one that upset me when he left. I tell myself that him leaving started the downward spiral.

Later years it was Super Glen. He was like a ghost. One minute he was causing problems on the wing and when you looked again a few seconds later he was in the centre causing problems. You never seemed to see him change position. Add his skill and it's no wonder he was a nightmare for the opposition in that free role.

I think over the years I have got more and more accustomed to players leaving and accept(ed) it as part and parcel of supporting Burnley and football in general. However there was a time from the mid to late 60's and early when it hurt deeply. If I had to pick one it would be Willie Morgan to MU.

As well as Welsh wing wizard Leighton James, the loss of the midfield midget Brian Flynn was met with an "Oh no what are we doing!!! " from the tweenage me

Absolutely gutted but the Billy scouted some decent players for us in later years

Leighton James. My first Burnley hero when I was too young to understand the financial realities of the club. I still vividly remember Jimmy Adamson telling Football Focus that Taffy would be a Burnley player "for a long time to come" a few weeks before we sold him.

Been pretty cyclical about players leaving ever since, but the one that hurt most was definitely Glen Little. Honourable mention also for Terry Cochrane - loved him for that goal at Ewood.

Being a Burnley fan in the sixties meant seeing many great players leave but the one that had me actually upset was Ralph Coates.

A mate of mine asked his mum to sew the name Ralph Coates onto his scarf, as he was his favourite player.

She got as far as Ralp, when unfortunately he was sold.

Taffy left in November 1975 and Derby were the reigning 1st Division champions then. Liverpool won the League in 75/76.

Fair do's. I must have remembered it wrongly. They did play us one Easter at the Turf around that time and battered us, but I assume then that was the Easter of the season before when they took the title. Anyway, I think we can all safely say reading this thread that many of us have never got over Dobbo or Tafffy leaving. Probably because it signaled and will always be associated with the downward spiral which was just around the corner.

For me it was Ralph Coates and Leighton James the first time.

Remember the ovation Ralph got when he set up goals for Orient. (Always loved by Burnley fans).

Didn't break my heart but seeing Ings and Trippier leave was pissey offey.

It still annoys me that we didn't hold out for more regards Ings and don't get me started on Trippier to Spurs for only £3.5m, my blood is still boiling!

For me Tripps was a big loss but Ings couldn't go soon enough for me. He had a face like a smacked @rse during his final season with us and thought he was billy big b@ll@cks.

As an older claret though, the biggest upset for me was Ralphie leaving for Spurs, who didn't get the best out of him. R.I.P. Ralph.

Peter Noble. Not just that he left, but he went to BLACKPOOL (my god). Signalled not just a downward movement, but that he was coming to the end of his career.

I too was upset about the Geoff Nulty sale.

I understood we needed to sell to survive, therefore the sale of Coates, Thomas, Dobbo etc.. was acceptable if disappointing, but I didn't see the need to sell Nulty - I thought he was a fine versatile player.

The one that disappointed me most though and really meant an end of an era, was the departure of my favourite player, Colin Waldron. He went after the 1976 relegation when there was a clear out of the old guard. I'm not saying the time wasn't right, although he was still around 28 years old. Amazingly he got a deal at Man Utd but hardly played.
