Re: Andre Gray new contract
Bugger thought this was a rumour he'd signed a new contract when I first came on what a let down when I realised. Oh well UTC
Re: Andre Gray new contract
I'd rather him stay, who wouldn't.
However if he isn't happy here, doesn't want to be here or play for the club, I'm not too bothered if he goes.
No player is bigger than the team or club, and we shouldn't be held to ransom by someone who only wants to bleed the club for every penny they can.
Suppose only time will tell, whether or not all Andre's quotes on coming here, getting premiere league football and wanting to play as much as possible were true.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Everyone who watches Burnley regularly knows grays strengths, and his weaknesses.
Strengths? Strength, pace, instinctive, and how he has developed enough to bring others into the game around him, and not just blindly make the same runs all the time.
Weaknesses? Relatively poor first touch (it's not a cliche, it's a stone cold fact - sometimes passing the ball to a stationary gray can be like kicking the ball against a trampoline) although he has improved slightly. Tends to disappear for spells, sometimes it looks like his head has dropped.
That said, I think he's an asset to us at this stage in both his career and our development.
Let's not pretend he can't trap a bag of cement. He obviously can, because it's probably not moving. A size five PL regulation football moving at pace towards him however, poses different problems.

Spot on. I am one of his bigger critics on here but I don't want to lose him until a suitable replacement has been identified.bobinho wrote:Everyone who watches Burnley regularly knows grays strengths, and his weaknesses.

After reading the thread title, I wrongly thought he'd signed, or was rumoured to be signing a new one

Any evidence in games last season?bobinho wrote:Let's not pretend he can't trap a bag of cement. He obviously can, because it's probably not moving. A size five PL regulation football moving at pace towards him however, poses different problems.
I remember, for example, he had a chance away at Hull where he shot narrowly wide. He took the pass and killed it stone dead. Hardly the ability of a player who struggles with a bad first touch.
Re: Andre Gray new contract

He's not got a great first touch, he's not got an awful first touch, he's just got a average first touch compared to other premier league strikers , which looks bad against better players. ( probably highlited or noticed more as we don't have the ball for long spells )
And equally you could look at Charlton away where it went 6 yards away.Spijed wrote:Any evidence in games last season?

Any more examples of his Velcro-esque first touch???Spijed wrote:Any evidence in games last season?

If his touch was that good, all the time, he wouldn't be playing for us.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
He's still managed to have a decent first season in the PL.
Now he's got more experience I'd expect him to better his previous tally, especially if he has better service, no ban via Twitter aggro etc.

You were the one who said he had a bad first touch, yet remarkably haven't been able to come up with examples where he missed good opportunities due to his control last season.bobinho wrote:Any more examples of his Velcro-esque first touch???

Re: Andre Gray new contract
I don't need to, you didn't ask me to, and neither did anyone else. It's not remarkable. I don't need specific examples. You do. If you need to come up with one, yes ONE, example of when Andre gray controlled the ball over an entire season, surely you know you have lost the argument???? If you watch Burnley, you know. He's actually scored from bad control in the past. Accidentally knocked it past the defender when he tried to control and come inside, knocked it past the defender and burst onto the ball to finish it. Looked great, but in reality, well. You decide.Spijed wrote:You were the one who said he had a bad first touch, yet remarkably haven't been able to come up with examples where he missed good opportunities due to his control last season.
His first touch, and control, needs work. That's a fact. Ignore it, dress it up, polish it. Up to you. But see what's in front of you.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Well i dont think Gray is worth paying £150k per week so if he's not gonna sign a new contract id rather have the £8m. Best case scenario is we can get the price up between £12-15m and get the deal done quickly and get someone in and contracted to us for the next 3 or 4 years

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Burnley must pay Luton £1 million per season in perpetuity.
Nothing we can do about it.

Nothing we can do about it.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
He must be worth less than we paid as he has since been Championship top scorer and proved he can score in the PL. Psstake. That greedy agent is putting him out there. I would hold on until Jan if we can and sell then. We cannot sell without a replacement though.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Is he after a move or is his agent trying to get interest so we give him a stupid pay rise, me I would stick with what we have set in place, if the max we are willing to pay anyone is £35,000 then tough **** that's what they get, but we should be prepared for worse case scenario, starting season without him and no cover

I don't think Premier League strikers need to control the ball. I've seen lads control a ball better on Towneley than Romelu Lukaku and he went for a bejillian pounds

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Just add a sell on clause related to the number of times he foils first touch and we're sorted.
Can't help but think we keep slipping down the ladder in terms of strikers worth. First Rodriguez, then Austin and ings all sold at a time when they were still young and improving. Although ings went for a measly tribunal fee all of those players were worth more than Gray due to age and potential.
Not only that but I think most Burnley fans would agree that all the others are better players than Gray.
The club won't be prepared to offer him a lot more than others anyway so best sell while we still can, but for Christs sake make sure we have an adequate replacement. It's not like the club won't already be looking at a pacy striker right?..right

We don't have to sell him, so I can't see they will without an adequate replacement being signed first.

I should imagine the replacement will cost around the same so basically it will be a like for like plus if were still after a winger and cb potentially 3 new players arrive before end of transfer window that are going to strengthen the starting 11LawsCanalJump wrote:If true hopefully the board are willing to spend £20 million on a quality replacement

Well, we've got Vokes, Barnes, Walters and Agyei.
Perhaps we'll be as relaxed about replacing him as we were Keane.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
There isn't any point selling him even if he won't sign a new contract.
We'd need a premier league ready replacement with pace that would clearly cost as much as that, if not more.
Of course, if he wants to go then we haven't really got a lot of choice but its not exactly what you want to hear at this stage of the transfer window.

If it's true I'm waiting for the first blinkered to come along and say it was a genius masterstroke in getting his replacement in early with the signing of "Walts". Apparently just like it was when we signed Tarkowski to replace Keane.

Even if he wants to go, he should be staying until we've signed a replacement.
Basically what several clubs have done to us over the last few years.

Sounds like our £9m for Andre from Brentford. Lots of if's, and's and but's to ever reach £18.5m
