A lot of people demonising the Burnley fans that stood and few that threw some of their missiles back towards Hanover fans, in all seriousness what did you think would happen, that they were just gonna run away and let the 3 stewards holding the line fend them off?
From where i was it was clear if Burnley fans had not of stood their ground Hanover fans would have been into the Burnley end and who knows what would have happened then.

Not having a go or defending anyone here. It would be interesting to know the break down of how those figures were arrived at, ie were the orders giving for fighting / serious public order / or just silly drunkenness and singing. Burnley Statement
Burnley Football Club and Lancashire Police are continuing an investigation and an appeal for footage into the crowd trouble that forced the abandonment of Saturday’s pre-season friendly with Hannover 96.
A police officer and two stewards were injured following the disorder, which occurred after fans of the German Bundesliga side charged towards home supporters during the first half at Turf Moor.
Burnley Football Club condemns the violence and will work with the authorities to help identify those responsible for causing injury and criminal damage at the stadium.
Lancashire Police are appealing for mobile phone footage showing the disorder, and their investigation into the incident is very much ongoing.
Although some footage of the incident has been received, they would still like to hear from anybody else who filmed the disorder, which began shortly before half-time.
Chief Superintendent Chris Bithell, of Lancashire Police, said: “The disorder we saw yesterday has no place in football, and certainly not in Lancashire. Children and families were in attendance at what was a pre-season friendly match, which should have passed peacefully and without incident – but which ended up being abandoned due to the behaviour of some of the travelling Hannover fans.
“Overnight we have collated and trawled through footage of the disorder, but we believe there will be more people who have videos on their phones which could help with our ongoing investigation.
“Anybody who has such footage is asked to send it to us as soon as possible.”
A proportionate policing operation was in place based on pre-game intelligence.
However, the behaviour of many Hannover fans before and during the game was confrontational from the outset.
Forty minutes into the game a large group of Hannover fans attempted en-masse to breach segregation and attack home supporters. This violence escalated with police officers and stewards being attacked and Lancashire Police decided, in consultation with the referee and the club’s ground safety officer, that the game could not continue.
Extra resources were quickly drafted in from across the county and the visiting Hannover fans were escorted from the stadium and away from the ground to ensure no further disorder took place.
Throughout the entire operation, supporter safety was paramount.
As a result of the violence, a police officer suffered a head injury and was treated at Burnley General Hospital. He has since been discharged.
Two stewards who suffered minor injuries were treated at the scene, and one, who suffered a dislocated shoulder, is currently undergoing treatment in hospital.
Ch Supt Bithell added: “We are now continuing to work closely with staff and senior officials at Burnley Football Club and their co-operation has been very much appreciated. Similarly, we would like to thank the fans who co-operated and left the ground without incident once the game had been called off.
“Once again, if anyone has mobile phone footage please send it to us as soon as possible.”
Anybody with footage is asked to send it to Lancashire Police using the ‘Report a Crime or Incident’ form on the force website at https://doitonline.lancashire.police.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
'A proportionate policing operation was in place based on pre-game intelligence' I think not and this was the root cause of 2 stewards being injured.

Totally agree. Where was the "robust" policing when most needed?
Ridiculous that in this day and age 45 nutters (45 being the number Hanover have said "were out of control") can cause a game to be abandoned

Come on now, you're all just anti police with a hidden agenda....
Are you all just paranoid?
You are letting your already clouded view, sway your opinion on Saturday's events.
The police did a fine job from start to finish, and in no way can an once of blame be layed at their door...

Lancashire police have really made themselves look like a un- professional rabble who are only fit for handing out speeding fines.
They were fully aware of the visiting supporters reputation home and abroad, and they had neither the intelligence, skills or experience to deal with the problem.
Whoever was in charge of this sad bunch really needs to be taken to task and relieved of his match day duties
God forbid if we have had invited Celtic down

It's all about numbers. Boots on the ground. Are you even aware that there were Merseyside officers deployed on Saturday to the game? Probably not.
It's a sorry state of affairs that Lancashire a Police can't deal with a friendly game involving 6-7k, and a few hundred away supporters, on their own. But this is the perilous state that consecutive years of cuts have left our public services in.
Also, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I believe the club foot the bill for officers deployed in the ground, and Lancs Police for officers outside.
A security operation inside the ground is very much led by the club itself, in conjunction with the private security and the Police.
If there's 50-100 Hannover fans, drunk, tooled up and intent on causing trouble, then there's very little a dozen police officers, NOT in Level 2 public order gear, can do.

Hi TsarBomba, that's how I understand the situation used to be, club inside the ground (maybe also areas immediately outside) and police budget for wider area.TsarBomba wrote: Also, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I believe the club foot the bill for officers deployed in the ground, and Lancs Police for officers outside.
.
It's possible that there's been a change in more recent years - not least with all the money in the "big clubs" and "more care" about the spending of public money - so, clubs are asked also to contribute to police costs beyond the immediate area of the ground. However, I'm not sure how this is worked out. And, I'm not sure if this is just football or would also apply to rugby/cricket and other large spectator sports (and maybe other events).
And, I'm not sure where the line would be drawn between "behaviour" of the crowd/spectators and the security threats that we face today.

Re: ARTICLE: Police seeking help with request for video footage
The cost of policing football matches was debated in Westminster Hall on 18 May 2011: Policing costs (Football Matches).
Included in debate are these comments by Damian Green:
"The provision of policing at a premier league football match, or any other commercial event such as a music concert, is considered a “special police service”, and it is governed by section 25 of the Police Act 1996. Special police services are those provided beyond the normal line of duty, such as when extra officers are deployed at a site to reduce the risk to public safety during an event. Where the event is seen as commercial—such as a premier league football match—the event organiser is responsible for meeting the costs incurred by providing that service. The cost of policing an event is determined locally by the police authority in negotiation with the event organiser, and not by the Home Office. That system allows flexibility and permits police authorities to take into account any benefits and the ability to pay of the event organiser when determining charges at a local level.
"Should an organiser be unwilling to pay for the level of policing deemed necessary to ensure public safety, the chief police officer can refuse to provide policing services. That may mean that the event organiser is denied a safety certificate by the relevant local authority, and without that certificate the event cannot take place."
Football clubs (and other commercial events) are obliged to pay for the policing in their footprint, which usually means inside the stadium and the surrounding car parks. The provision of consequential policing outside a football match—for example, at the nearest railway or tube station, in nearby pubs and bars or even in the city centre—is currently the responsibility of the police and is provided at their discretion and their cost. Clubs do not have to pay for that extra service, so the cost is paid for by the taxpayer.

Hannover fans were locked inside the ground and the police have cctv watching their every move before, during and after their attempted riot. Some bright spark then decides to let them all out and then asks for fans videos of it. Unbelievable.

But they are responsible for the arrests and the charges. The sentencing is then based on guidelines of the charges they received.HatfieldClaret wrote:Police weren't responsible for sentencing after looking at the facts through non-tinted spectacles.

Re: ARTICLE: Police seeking help with request for video footage
From what I can remember, the Cherry Tree incident was pre arranged. Rovers lads phoned up Burnley lads and arranged to meet for mutual fisticuffs. More Burnley lads turned up than Rovers were expecting, they got windy and they themselves phoned the Police and reported that they were being attacked. Economical with the truth shall we say.
The one who got the longest sentence was a well known author who didn't even make it to the scene of the trouble, the taxi mistakenly taking him to Blackburn Central Station instead of the pub, which was either the Railway or the Station. So 5 years for taking a taxi to a railway station, should be some serious sentences handed down for attacking police and stewards, ripping out seats and throwing them, possession of offensive weapons etc. Shouldn't there?

If that's true then the rovers supporters should have got big jail also, as the contact between the group must've come out at court. I guess the previous records of those who got the big sentences may have played a part? Surely that's a court issue thought and not old bill?Herts Clarets wrote:From what I can remember, the Cherry Tree incident was pre arranged. I agree that ripping seats out and attacking the authorities should bring some severe sentences.

The point is the sentences were not dished out equally which the police who applauded at the end pushed for, and no not everyone who was there realised what they were there for which I'm not going into on here but you obviously know the facts better than I domybloodisclaret wrote:The key to this post is quite simple. Everyone who went that day knew what they were doing (albeit significantly inebriated) the issue is / was though that the punishment for planning to do something was far worse than actually doing it.
