As a 'like for like' replacement, there's not really many options out there.
Benik Afobe
Shane Long
Leigh Griffiths
Enner Valencia
Oumare Niasse
Abel Hernandez
Dwight Gayle
I see them all as realistic targets.

I would be terrified if we signed Bobby Wood. Shocking finisher for the US team.

It will be Shane Long, 30, ROI - only missing Stoke on his CV and he'd have the full house. Premier League experience, good lad, blah, blah, blah...

Patrick Bamford.
Some posters on this board were wetting themselves with excitement the last time we signed him "wonderful piece of business", "very happy with our dealings in this window", "great potential", blah, blah, blah.

If it's Shane Long who is brought in as Gray's replacement then that is going to be incredibly meh, as they say on here.

Well fits the profile, hard working, pretty crap scoring record, known to Dyche, domestic based and Irish.Bin Ont Turf wrote:If it's Shane Long who is brought in as Gray's replacement then that is going to be incredibly meh, as they say on here.
He might have been a semi reasonable signing 5 or 6 years ago but now it'd be laughable.

If we signed one of the players on that list as a direct replacement for Gray then we would be no better off whatsoever, maybe financially yes but in footballing terms no!UpTheClaretsFCBK wrote:I personally think all of those players are better than Andre Gray.
None of those strikers realistically offer us a better goal scoring threat than Gray.
I'd be hoping for better, but better is more expensive as we all know

If James Wilson or Danny Ings are fully recovered from their injuries then I'd be up for either of those on a season long loan with an agreed price for a future transfer if we stay up.

I think the majority of this board are going to be very disappointed.
All the players on that list would cost between £10-£20million.
There's no chance we'll spend more than £20million on one player.

I think a young player with potential- similar to what Gray was when we signed him - would be a good shout, someone who can at least impact from the bench and one we'll look to develop, Kenneth Zohore (Cardiff).
Danny Ings on loan would be lovely in addition.

I wouldnt actually be averse to Griffiths if we brought in someone else as well.
He certainly knows where the net is. Not saying he would be a good replacement for Gray. But alongside someone else he would be worth the gamble.

Leigh Griffiths is awful, couldnt hit a barn door in the Championship for Wolves.
Why would Newcastle sell their best player from last year to us?

Gray had just gone on loan to Luton in the conference... from Hinckley. At the same age in the same season!

Griffiths has scored goals at Scottish Division 1 level, English League 1 level and the SPL.
He's never played in the Championship so the figures in Rattys post are absolute ********.
Griffiths is nowhere near the standard of player we need, he rarely turns up for the big games and he looks like an early abortion that grew up into an adult. No thanks.

I was watching the Dundee Derby last night.
Two players stood out by a mile - Stanton for Dundee United, and Allan for Dundee
But I also know they wouldn't get a sniff in the top two leagues in England, because they just are not good enough.
Griffiths is maybe slightly better, but the same still applies.

How are his stats wrong so I didn't put Scottish championship level and I was never saying he was good enough for us just pointing out his goal scoring stats
Re: If Gray goes who would you like in
I think you're confused, Leigh Griffiths was loaned out to the SPL while Wolves were in the Championship so i'm not sure were the 44 Championship goals come from? He can only score goals in the SPL, failed in England and cant score for his national team.RattyClaret wrote:12 goals in 26 games at league 1 level

You're comparing an SPL strikers goal record with one whos been in the Championship and PL for the last 3 seasons.

If we are going down the young striker route could do worse then Che Adams (Birmingham City), Derby have had a 3 Million pound bid rejected, and Fulham have been linked, given Birmingham's financial state surely we could gazump their offers, fair chance of a profit in future also.Cubanclaret wrote:I think a young player with potential- similar to what Gray was when we signed him - would be a good shout, someone who can at least impact from the bench and one we'll look to develop, Kenneth Zohore (Cardiff).
