If it happens I will stick my neck out and say I think he will be great for us. I know a few disagree with my sentiment on Long, but back him and lets hope he can get back to the form he is capable of.

Starting 38 games he will notch - being a bit part impact sub doesn't seem to suit him.

Where have you seen this mate?

As long as we can cut out his diving .Him and Doyle were legends at Reading for gaining penalties at the mearest hint of a challenge .
That said he was the fastest player in the Prem and with decent service will score a bag of goals for us.

Some clown on twitter said we'd agreed terms with him but,we haven't agreed a fee.
I smell BS,we shall see though.

Can someone explain to me how replacing Andre Gray with Shane Long is good business. I'd be fascinated to hear the argument. What an embarrasment of a window if we don't replace Gray adequately.

30 years old, not prolific (in a far more creative team than ours).

But hey, ability is measured by number of PL appearances, so let's forget the things that matter when it comes to replacing a striker who managed 32 in 73 for us.

Well. If we got £18m for gray, and we spend say £12m on long, we have £6m in the bank, and a better footballer at the club. One who wants to be here.

I'm still struggling with the misunderstanding that gray was sold against his wishes???

He wanted out. We sell him now for a good fee, or he sulks here all season, and leaves for nowt. The club has acted in the only sensible way it could.

Said on another thread that it would have been a very good signing...four or five years ago. Into his thirties, game built around pace which will naturally decline. Another 30 something on a long term contract ? Got to be very wary of going too far down that road.
We should be capable of younger and better although I fully appreciate that, unfortunately, we appear to be rather restricted in our recruitment reach.

Shane Long can head a ball and can also trap and control a football. He is an international. He wants to be here if he comes,Gray didn't.We got probably more money for Gray than we will pay for Long.Adequate replacement for Gray.So don't be to embarrassed.Ive never been embarrassed by anything football related in my life.Oh and he has no connection to Little Mix which is a bonus. He knows most of our players and O'Neill probably tied on for our next manager.

This can't be true. Southampton only have two other strikers and one is usually injured. I've heard that we're the only club that sells players before bringing in replacements.

No good just being able to head the ball, trap it, control it etc, if he can't find the net at the end of it. It's not ice skating where we get points for technical merit.

Gray scored 9 goals in his first season in the Prem, which is higher than every single one of Shane Long's bar one.

Good job he played against a crap Sunderland side or he would have only got 6.He wasn't the world beater that some on here think he was.He was good in the Championship against poore defenders and I think that's his level.Thats my opinion. You obviously think differently.I will reserve judgement on Long if and when he comes.

What about some facts to add to the trivial negative comments about an established international Premier League Centre forward.

Very good player who IMO would become a better player under SD and his coaching team even at this stage in his career.

Got all the attributes that Gray had but a much better all round player with proven PL experience.

2010 - 11 - Long scored 21 goals in 44 games in the Championship (Reading)
2015 -16 - Gray scored 23 goals in 41 games in the Championship (Burnley)

2011 - 12 - Long scored 8 goals in 32 games in the Premier League (West Brom)
2012 - 13 - Long scored 8 goals in 34 games in the Premier League (West Brom)
2015 - 16 - Long scored 10 goals in 28 games in the Premier League (Southampton)

2016 - 17 Gray scored 9 goals in 32 games in the Premier League (Burnley)

Long's Record

Southampton
Transfer Fee : £12,000,000
49 - Starts
18 - Goals

Hull
Transfer Fee : £7,000,000
15 - Starts
4 - Goals

West Brom
Transfer Fee : £6,500,000
60 - Starts
19 - Goals

Reading
95 - Starts
44 - Goals

How are stats from over 5 years ago relevant? We should sign Rickie Lambert, he bagged 15 goals for Southampton that season! What matters is the present and present day Shane Long doesn't score.

Ridiculous statement.

If you take time to read it the comparison is with Gray and the fact they have an almost identical record.

10 goals in 28 games in 2015-16 is that not present day enough? I suppose Gray's 23 goals in the Championship don't count then?

In my opinion Shane Long is a much better striker than Gray and it would be an improvement with cash left over towards another signing.

I hope we sign him, if for nothing else but to stick it up some of the most moaning fans who allegedly support our Club. I read on the board today that some people would whinge if we signed Lionel Messi and I don't disbelieve it!

So we could be replacing a striker who was lambasted on here a lot for only scoring 9 league goals last season with another striker who scores a similar amount and some people are happy with this??

Some heads need wobbling because this love in for Shane Long is just down right bizarre....

Its not really a love in Sid, probably more a case of a realistic target and people wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt if he did sign and see how he would fit in. I suppose he is similar to Gray speed wise (which we need) and does have other positive attributes which Gray lacked. Wouldn't be a bad signing IMO
