Football is a good benchmark of where it is in reality - what better cross section of a town are you going to get?
Its like the Inbred song - I think its stupid and does not make sense.... I don't find it offensive, just stupid.
"Dingle" - I'm not a Dingle, I have no history of being married to a Dingle in our family tree (Either real or an actor/ress that plays in Emerdale Farm)... so that is incorrect... but it doesn't offend me.
If I was a Chelsea Rent boy watching the game I'd be thinking "I take home more money in a week than you see in a year" so fill your boots. I presume any rent boys in the crowd would have heard far worse. If I was a Chelsea fan bgeing called a "Rent boy" my first thought would doubtless be - no I'm not. Dealt with...
Oh for God sake ( sorry to all religious types for blasphemy) don't bring common sense into play ( sorry to all old fashioned thinking real folk for even utterance of CS ). We are on the cusp of a namby pamby utopia ( sorry all namby pambys).
I really hate the way this PC world's heading. (Sorry all people with way too much time on there hands and feel the need to be offended at butterfly pish . Does saying hate offend folk? Sorry!)
Man the F up. ( sorry ladies)

Re: Homophobic chanting at Stamford Bridge
I'm sure I once saw a quote by someone in a magazine or newspaper saying that going to the football is like panto for adults. It pretty much sums it up.
It's just a group of people trying to rile the other group, but not discriminating against any individual.
As above, if people sing at us, and it's inventive, I laugh. Preston fans rapid retort in December 2015 to our 'you're going down with the Blackburn' chant was very amusing. I certainly don't take it personal.

Love this thread.
But I think those calling the chant in question "homophobic" need to look up its definition.
The chant may be deemed offensive, but does not express homophobic attitude.

Chelsea have been called rent boys since the 70s. I think their was a scandal back in the late 60s, when someone in public office or a prominent society members were recruiting young men for sex in the chelsea area. Re: Homophobic chanting at Stamford Bridge
There is an element of support that have been allowed to be offensive at games. Burnley Football Club have done very little to stop these so called "half wits" from being anywhere near the brand. To be honest the people who chant this stuff are linked to the far right. Burnley FC know who they are and I don't see any of them being banned. Come on Burnley do summat about it. It makes us all look bad.ClaretTony wrote:It's the same halfwits who chanted: "He tweets what he likes, Andre Gray, he tweets what he likes."
and Mod - free speech is there to allow everyone to live together - if gay people feel so uncomfortable because of chanting it makes it impossible for them to feel comfortable at Burnley games. 2017 Burnley as a town is more inclusive than that. Let's move to the 21st century and be the best club in the league for inclusivity.
Re: Homophobic chanting at Stamford Bridge
I was always told from a young age that you will hear lots of swearing and ridiculous chanting at football. If you are easily offended a football match isn't really the place for you. You have to have a thick skin and brush off some of the things you would prefer not to hear. Far too much whinging and people looking to be offended for my liking.
Re: Homophobic chanting at Stamford Bridge
I think Elwa has it pretty much spot on.
The rugby player's opinion that 'football has a problem with homosexuality' may have credence, but as Elwa asks, 'where in the world can you get a better cross section of society and political views than at a football ground?'
It is not a Burnley 'problem'. It reflects society as a whole. I'd hazard a guess, reading this board, that we have as much intellect and tolerance as anywhere (with a few exceptions of course). Have you been to Millwall, West Ham, Leeds, Portsmouth, Stoke, Glasgow, Rotherham, Watford?
Oppressive liberalism is as bad as all the 'isms' it seeks to wipe out. Misguided PC has allowed the horrific grooming epidemic to get out of control.
The real racists, sexists and homophopes are gleefully continuing to spew their bile and make lives a misery; while the rest of us call each other out for watching Carry On films, goading Germans and singing 'we can see you holding hands' at Brighton fans.

Elwa and Paul are talking about the real consequences of these types of attitudes (I get the "its just banter lolz" argument, but surely its possible to do that without reminding everyone how backward you are?).

Re: Homophobic chanting at Stamford Bridge
To be honest while there is an inane element to the homophobic chanting, it affects a minority. Not saying it is right but I personally am far more offended by the constant singing of tits, fa***** and Clarets - that sort of thing puts me off bringing my young daughter on. Similarly some of the crude male banter on here - things like "we've just beat Chelsea, I'm off for a w***".
Obviously there shouldn't be any insults to gay people or other groups, but I often wonder why here aren't threads about things closer to home and more relevant for most of us.

Homophobia in football: How LGBT fans' groups are changing opinions on terraces
Quotes from Gay Gooners chairman Dave Raval:
"And the 2016-17 season was the first when I haven't heard those chants away at Chelsea."
"We are treading the same path of anti-racism campaigners maybe 20 or 30 years ago. We are getting there a bit faster, but there is still a way to go."
A lot more on the BBC website, all encouraging.

If we had an LGBT group why would any of them post on here? I barely post as a woman. Let alone an LGBT woman.
This thread has provided me loads of material for all those people who say that homophobia and sexism don't exist. I shouldn't be surprised that people respond with 'is just banter'
Actually no, no its not banter. The same way that racist nonsense isn't banner. Why should I have to put up with listening to misogyny and homophobia? Do none of you have sisters? Daughters? Wives? Do you think they should be reduced to nothing more then parts of their body? Do none of you have gay friends or family?

Why would I want a Burnley LGBT fan group to post on here? (1) would improve the quality of our fan base; (2) would demonstrate that being LGBT is not a distinguishing feature, we are all human beings; (3) would help demonstrate that Burnley is a football club where the quality of the footballer is how we judge our players, not the gender of their partner(s); (4) would improve the quality of debate, including the quality of good banter (and not abuse).
I hope you feel you can keep posting. Welcome to the board.

Re: Homophobic chanting at Stamford Bridge
Controversial, devil's advocate thought.
If a football chant is just a name calling aimed to rile the opposition fans, why would that be racist/sexist/anti anything other than just a chant?
If it is aimed at an individual, then yes, every time.
So - rent boy. That is a male prostitute. It is offensive to be called that. However, it is not aimed at any individual. It is aimed at the lot of them. In the same way as Burnley fans have chants about Dingles and less fingers aimed at us and most offensive of all, 'just a small town in....'!!!
If we called them any name at all, that appears to be being deemed offensive. It is supposed to be offensive but not personal...
What about the chants aimed at drummers?
Back to rent boy. What has it got to do wiuth LGBT? Nothing at all. They as a group are not rent boys, unless a particular individual ploughs his living that way and happens to be happy to be classified as LGBT.
Whilst I deplore personal attacks, most general 'offensive' chants are just water off a ducks back. Far worse is the nasty Jack Walker song. That is in very poor taste indeed.

Hi Ian, why do we need to be "offensive?" Why not go to the game to enjoy the game? Yes, some friendly banter between the fans, but why "offensive?" There's always someone who takes it further than everyone else? There's always someone who doesn't know where the boundaries are?IanMcL wrote:Controversial, devil's advocate thought.

So, if you or I had a particular feature that was the subject of an "offensive" chant by part of the crowd wouldn't we feel that at least in part it was personal? And, wouldn't we then decide either to stop coming to the game or to respond "in kind" to the people who we feel are "attacking" us?
Blue touch paper doused?

A rent boy, by definition, prostitutes himself for money. It has no bearing on how he identifies himself. It's that fundamental lack of understanding that makes it tougher for the LGBT community

Its just banter people need to relax. Edgy jokes are the best jokes, I find gay jokes hilarious, it doesn't make me homophobic. Throughout child hood, being gay is deemed wrong in social groups at school, not because people HATE gay people but because quite a few people think the idea of being gay is revolting. If you hate all religion, are you racist? If you find gay sex revolting, are you homophobic?

it matters not how he identifies himself, its the inference that two men having sex is bad, otherwise, why would the term 'rent boy' be deemed insulting? otherwise, why would the chants be deemed offensive?
why isn't the chant about chelsea gigolos or escorts, which implies female customers?

Hating an idea, isn't racist/homophobic/sexist. I think ALL religion is a pile of sh*Te, it doesn't mean I hate all people who are religious.

I always wonder how many homophobes are also utterly disgusted by the physical act of a straight man using a straight woman's 'tradesmens entrance', as is so popular on many straight porn websites (so I hear)
Re: Homophobic chanting at Stamford Bridge
Are there any people who really hate ALL gay people? I honestly don't think there is.UpTheBeehole wrote:I always wonder how many homophobes are also utterly disgusted by the physical act of a straight man using a straight woman's 'tradesmens entrance', as is so popular on many straight porn websites (so I hear)
Do these people chanting a homophobic chant at a football game really HATE gay people? Probably not.
Everything with the LGBT (or whatever they call themselves) is blown out of proportion to cause a scene. I don't think many people in the world care about your sexuality yet the way some go on you would think gay people were forced into slavery. Are gay people not allowed in football stadiums? Are they declined jobs for being gay? Can they not do shopping? What is the whole issue? Surely not a song at a football stadium.
The whole divide is created by gay people who try and act like they're being treated differently. Like who cares if there is no openly gay footballers? Why does a footballers sexuality need to be public? Stinks of pity.
