Yes it's true. According to an article in the Independent. They couldn't identify it on a map. We must be overtaking Americans in the thickosphere. Most never knew where Cambodia was when they were fighting in Vietnam. They thought that it was somewhere in South America. Now they apparently know predominantly where Slovakia is when most Brits are clueless.

Dummies.
Everybody knows it's a very cold island up near Greenland.
It's where Bjork comes from.

Most Americans don't know where Canada is, even those who live close to the border. Spent a weekend in Cleveland once (seemed like a week), and the ignorance was just appalling. It's not just their president who is so ill-informed.

And Bjork's from Iceland. That's a smaller place than Greenland, but with many more people.

1 in 10 Brits is around 6.5 million people......I wonder how many of that number are under the age of 5 years old? Probably around half of it....then not to mention the few million people who emigrated over here, brought over by their husbands and children and haven't learnt the English language because they were refused education in their country of Birth due to Religion.....those people have probably never seen a map book and if they had they couldn't read it.....
So I can see why 1 in 10 people don't know where Ireland is on a map....

It's a play on words, which is the definition of a pun.

Re: 1 in 10 of Brits do not know where Ireland is.
For surveys to have much meaning, they need to use a REPRESENTATIVE sample of the population considered.
There's no indication here of how the sample was drawn up, it maybe just a number of visitors to the GoCompare site (who could be arsed to do the survey?
Given the achingly abysmal ads GoCompare do, the site probably attracts an atypical cross section of visitors.
The fact that The Independent don't seem to have bothered to explain how the "sample" was drawn & whether it's representative, but quote the findings anyway; reflects poorly on them.

Ireland is on a boat ride from Holy Island...no Hollywood....no Holyrood...no Holyhead. That's the one. Norn is a boat ride from Stranraer. It is, evidently, a plane ride from Latvia too.

Apparently it's close to a place called Eire, where little people with ginger beards play on harps.

Those little people can cast spells with those harps.
Every 17th March they turn hardened English types into salt of the earth Guiness drinkers.

Apparently, one of the most misspelled words by people living in Massachusetts is Masachusetts. People living in Wisconsin struggle with Wiscisin.

As it's the typical red top label of "Brits", does that mean that it's also 1 in 10 in Norn Iron too?

Everybody knows that Erie is in Pennsylvania, home of the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League. How a team from Pennsylvania got into the OHL......don't ask.
