As I've just said to my sister, I'd travel double the time to work there.

For me, doubling travel time doesn't sound too bad. If it had quadrupled it, then there may be a problem. I just think that doubling travel time isn't the end of the world for a good job.

That's what I tried to make her understand, but she doesn't quite understand what McLaren means to someone like me.

I'm very good at what I do, to the point my current employers keep resisting my attempts to change jobs within my company.

I've got my work/family balance right as it stands because where I work is in the same town as where I live.

A few years ago I just missed out (made final 2) on a job at one of the top car companies in the world, the actual dream job and that job is available again, 3-4yrs after I last applied.

The only issue is its approx 1 half- 2 hours drive each way everyday and the pay isn't much more than I'm on now.
It is however a prestigious company with all the pressures that would entail, including longer hours where required.

I'm just wondering what some of you would do if you were in my position?
I'd consider it only if there was scope for rapid promotion to the next rung. Otherwise sounds like a you'd have to prove yourself all over again, have a lot more hassle for not much more money.

I'm more than capable of proving myself again, its the foot in the door though and that's what I want.
This job opens numerous doors and leads to the big paying jobs.

I can sort cheapish bits anyway.

The company I work for is part of Allmakes/Terrafirma.

So long as it isn't some old series I can help, because we stopped doing a lot of the older series stuff.

I think that went well....

More questions about my work ethic, attitude etc than anything else

They've got 2 others to interview after me and I should find out soon enough because the position has been vacant a while now and they want it filling sooner rather than later.

On the plus side the lead interviewer, the lad I know, informed the other interviewer that I got to the final 2 last time I applied.

Just got to sit and wait now....

In any case I got to see the McLaren cars driven by -

Hunt (first time I've seen his)
Lauda
Prost
Senna....

Worth going just to see those cars with those drivers names on them.

In terms of your work ethic I hope you didn't confess to spending a lot of your working time on here and other social media :D

Good luck - hope you get it if you definitely want it.

I've applied for the road car side though, but Guy Martins programmes are usually well worth watching.

I'm probably looking at it a different way around, but let's say you took the job. One of two things would happen:-
a) You are fine with it, or
b) You aren't.
So, if you are worried about (b), the question is: Would I be able to get a job I like back in Didcot if it all goes tits up without too much difficulty?
If the answer to that is yes, then taking the job is low risk and you might as well give it a shot. If it's going to be difficult to return, then that's fairly high risk, and you might end up dead miserable.

You got to go for it Sid,

You'll always be wondering what if.........if you don't.

I worked and lived in Central London for 15years, yes it was great and hard work especially travelling with long hours. When our second child came along we knew it was time to move on...I'm glad we did it and the experience is invaluable. We have no regrets.

Best of Luck

Hands up if you've just massively impressed someone who was part of the team that designed and launched the McLaren F1 road car in the 90's!!!!!

Blew him away with my idea for clutch tool kit, they hadn't thought of it I don't think.
I even told him if I don't get the job and they pinch my idea I want credit for it, because I'll hear about it at some point
