I just watched the highlights of the Liverpool FA cup 0-0 where Wayne Russell played a good game, even the bad keepers have good games or they wouldn't make it as pro's.tim_noone wrote:I remember Pearce played against Bradford in a league cup game and the telegraph football headlines read "world class" keeping! Who was the other reserve keeper who's only decent game (or one I can recall) came against us on loan for was it Chesterfield? Was it David Williams?

A few have Michopolous in their worst list I see. If he had played the way he did in his league debut for us vs Huddersfax because Crichton was away on Red Dwarf duty, he would have been giving Heaton a good run for his money as the best.

In my opinion yes. I remember shortly after we signed him Neenan caught a cross and got a round of applause from those around me in the CF stand.Bin Ont Turf wrote:Worserer than Neenan?
We played Cambridge away and Roger was in goal for the opposition. I saw him outside the ground and thought that's 3 points for us today. By half time we were 4 up. Away. And we were crap.

Right keeper but it was Rochdale. The only good thing about him was he had a hell of a kick. Until he played against us then he became Shiltonesque.Goobs wrote:I just watched the highlights of the Liverpool FA cup 0-0 where Wayne Russell played a good game, even the bad keepers have good games or they wouldn't make it as pro's.

Best - Heaton
Worst - Neenen. Remember playing Posh away. There was a travelling circus pitched up on the car park at the back of the away end. Joe managed to give us one of the most inept keeping performances I've seen. The song, "there's a circus in the town. Joe neenen is the clown" grew louder as each calamitous goal went in!

It's funny how some people select 4th division goalkeepers as the best.
Of course they weren't.

Re: best and worst goalkeepers since watching Burnley
For the best, Up until we signed tom Heaton, the answer was easily Alan Stevenson.
The answer is now easily tom Heaton. Do I think he will always be the best? No, I'd like to think he won't be (although he probably will be) That would just be narrow minded. If we sign someone who is better, then it won't be Heaton. Will that happen? Nah, prob not. But I'm open to it.
Worst? Neenan. Absolutely undoubtedly.

Kendall for me too as the worst. Thought Marriott and Walker were decent for us. Overall can't see past Heaton as our best while I have been watching us.Guitargeorge wrote:Mark Kendal takes the prize for worst. His displays at Derby and Blackpool were shocking.

Re: best and worst goalkeepers since watching Burnley
Pretty much neck and neck between Heaton and Stevenson. In the early 1970s Stevenson was part of a better overall team and in another era would have been an England 'keeper. Heaton's individual role in our current success is probably greater than Stevenson's was then.
Other than that always rated Peyton, played for us at the highest level and also an international.
At the other end of the scale some people are focusing on poor individual performances - Kendall's at Blackpool was a shocker - but in terms of regular starters Neenan closely followed by Hansbury were consistently poor.

Re: best and worst goalkeepers since watching Burnley
Watching us from 84 onwards
Best mainly for the difference they made to the teams they play/played in
Heaton, no words needed should be at least Englands no.2
Woods, might be a bit controversial to include him but he made the difference between staying in Div3 and dropping back to Div4, even though he was way past his prime.
Coyne IMO would have been no1 for some time had he not got the injuries and I don't think Jensen would have displaced him like he did the others
close Grant, Marriott(loan).
Worst. Jesus we have had some shocking Keepers, some of them wouldn't get a game up Towneley on a Sunday afternoon
Hansbury by a country mile couldn't catch a cold that guy
Kendall
Neenan
close Kval, Cennamo & NTG a bit of a flapper who never looked in control of any situation.

Re: best and worst goalkeepers since watching Burnley
Blacklaw, Stevens on in his prime and Heaton just over Beresfords first spell with us. I agree with the poster who says Heaton doesn't dominate his area enough.
The worst must be Neenan, Hansbury and Mellor.
Poor goalies tend to get dropped quickly. We had to stick with these 3 as we hadn't too many other choices and we suffered for it.
I didn't see McDonald's play but he was an England keeper and played in the World Cup, and is sometimes referred to in the national press, so I must assume that he would have been the best.

Best-Stevenson, Blacklaw and Heaton. I'd also like to give special mention to Nicky Walker and Harry Thompson. Worst I'd have to plum for Mark Kendall although he was certainly a better keeper than what he showed for us.

This link was the last time Michopoulos and him played for us on the Turf. It's the worst afternoon of goalkeeping I've ever witnessed.

He'd come on as a sub too although their keeper had got a genuine injury. The sub goalkeeper was Chris Stringer. He certainly contributed to the day's farcical goalkeeping.ChrisG wrote:The Sheffield Wednesday keeper didn't exactly cover himself in glory for our second either!

Having read this I'm eternally grateful to be just too young to clearly remember Hansbury and Neenan.

I think in the game against Rochdale when Williams played a blinder they had two sent off and still won 1-0. That's when they saw us as local rivals and their supporters did enjoy it.

I think the best two keepers I have seen are Blacklaw and Heaton. Chris Pearce could be pretty bad on his off days, some of his performances in the 91-92 promotion season were comical.
