We were not good today and on another day would have been punished. Perhaps we will be better away this season?
Re: Awful performance
Bear in mind that the Palace players for three games were wandering around like lost sheep playing a system they couldn't fathom. Today they were given a system that they could understand, and an incentive to play for their manager's last chance, and it looked very much like they were well up to playing for their manager. In effect, their cup final.

I just think that Sam has a bit more about him as a front man based on his experience, both with Burnley and Wales, at a higher level than Wood.
That is not to say that Wood doesn't have every chance of fulfilling the potential which made SD decide to pay that enormous fee for him.

Disagree totally there. Other than the header at the end which was a sitter (although Lowton is pressuring and undoubtedly affects Danns finish) most of the efforts are blocked pr saved. That's good defending not riding luck.Wile E Coyote wrote:their inability to score doesn't detract from the fact that we allowed them to get through so easily time and time again. Palace were not kept out by the quality of our team in any shape or form. Wouldn't have been so bad if it was just our lack of flair at the other end, but we rode our luck and grabbed 3 points.

Re: Awful performance
We have got our bad performance out of the way now.we lost our captain and goalkeeper and we still won.......and now we put it behind us and move on.That is the Dyche way.
All teams have an off day every once in a while.
We are 7th in the league.....Up the Clarets.

Re: Awful performance
After about 40 mins I thought we should have taken a striker off and replaced with a midfielder as we were getting over run in the middle.
However Dyche made his decisions and we won so he was correct as usual.

Played 4, Won 2, Drawn 1, Lost 1. Brilliant performance or awful performance it really is history, Burnley 1 Palace 0 is how it will be remembered in May. Dyche will file this under good experience to learn that we can grind out 3 ugly points. I for one was over the moon when the final whistle went, 3 points, clean sheet, Wood now has scored twice and we have 4 points for them two goals let Palace be happy that they played well and should have won I couldn't care less move on.

The thread title says awful performance, it was. No denying it's a fantastic result though and I don't think anybody is denying that.
I Don't think there is much wrong with fans wanting too see a more fluent entertaining performance from our team win or lose. And I agree with some of the criticism. I don't think we defended that well either we rode our luck and they missed some absolute sitters.

Re: Awful performance
I think the problem Dyche had there was having to replace his Goalkeeper. Its a substitution you would never make but effectively you lose one of your 3 options. I think replacing an injured goalie should be a free sub. If he then made another change at half time Dyche would have been very limited in his options for later on in the second half.Inchy wrote:After about 40 mins I thought we should have taken a striker off and replaced with a midfielder as we were getting over run in the middle.

Totally agree, Westwood had to be kept back as Insurance for Defour and Cork which limited his options to Arfield or Barnes.RocketLawnChair wrote:I think the problem Dyche had there was having to replace his Goalkeeper. Re: Awful performance
Seriously can't believe the negativity on this thread. We didn't play particularly well but got 3 points. Would we have got extra points for winning "with style"? We did a job and that's what matters. Finally, if we did not defend well how come goals against were nil?
Again, the big picture is 7 points from 4 games with 2 of those being away to last seasons champions and runners up. Not bad for "little old Burnley" eh?

Re: Awful performance
Very few complaining about the style. The problem was the risk of not winning because we hardly had the ball in the second half and very rarely in their half. We had several midfield options as well as the obvious one of Westwood as both Brady and airfield can play there.
Re: Awful performance
The big picture shows that we're 7th in the table with 7 points and we're 7 points clear of the bottom three. Seventh heaven!
It was a dire performance. Dyche got it wrong, completely and utterly wrong. We were given a goal by Palace and without that the game would have ended nil nil as we certainly didn't look like creating anything ourselves and they couldn't hit a cows backside with a banjo. I can see why Dyche wanted to try Wood and Vokes but it just won't work. Vokes / Wood and Wells / Barnes maybe, but not the two big lads together. Plus we simply do not have the midfield to play 442. Jack Cork was outstanding yesterday but the rest of the midfield were AWOL - especially in the second half. Brady and JBG are luxury players and as such we need to ensure we have cover from the middle of the park if they are out of position.
Hopefully 442 was an experiment we got away with, but 451 is clearly the only option with this set of players currently.

Goals against was nil mainly down to some woeful finishing and a great save.Goodclaret wrote:Seriously can't believe the negativity on this thread. We didn't play particularly well but got 3 points. So no I don't think we defended that well and Dann being completely free at the back post 3 times from corners was especially poor. But like I said fantastic result. UTC

Re: Awful performance
You need to watch back. There's woeful finishing for the last sitter that Dann missed. Most of the others were blocked. That's organised defending, people knowing their roles, putting bodies on the line etc. Last season we beat Liverpool at home with a very similar performance - no-one was saying that was an awful performance.RocketLawnChair wrote:Goals against was nil mainly down to some woeful finishing and a great save.

Vokes missed a free header too at 1-0. Barnes forced a good save as well. We weren't fluid going forward fair enough but we created enough problems for them in the first half for them to be worried at the back - they got some blocks and last ditch defending in too.

Re: Awful performance
Surely folks admire how well we defended our box though. And be very proud of that aspect of the performance, keeping clean sheets in the Premier League is not a mean feat.
Obviously if we'd used the ball better, we would have not have been under so much pressure, but the only real sitters they missed were Benteke's first half header and Dann's late miscued header, other than that, everything was repelled or blocked by what was a really impressive rearguard action - with a fine contribution was a sub keeper to boot.
Agree in the main about the formation though, I think its a fair argument that the only player who really benefits from a 4-4-2 is the second striker who gets to start. Jeff Hendrick has become a pretty important player for us and was missed today.

4-1?! I know we were lucky to win but I think you are being overly dramatic. I can only think of 2 clear cut, "could have easily been a goal" chances all game for Palace.Vegas Claret wrote:Every single game Dyche always says the thing - he looks at is the performance and if we get that right then results will follow. Re: Awful performance
We did look over-run in mid field today. However the manager didn't panic, stuck to his system, replaced like for like and gained 3 points.
I wonder what the Palace chairman "we have a better squad" was thinking about re Mr. Dyche and his summer appointment.

Re: Awful performance
I think that considering the fact that we lost our talisman and captain early on, our most creative player in Brady had a rare (this season) off day and we were missing Jeff Hendrick who is the perfect player to play the advanced role in a midfield five, we did extremely well to pick up three points.
