Re: Being in the lower leagues was hard !!!
It was far from enjoyable. It is what it is, we were beyond crap for a good number of years and yes we were, for some of it at least; the biggest club in division 4 by a long stretch. Alas, size doesn't guarantee results as losing 0-6 at home to Hereford Utd shows.
That said. It was equally bizarre and humorous to find ourselves being pegged as rivals of Rochdale and Stockport. More so the rather inexplicable rivalry clubs such as Plymouth Argyle fans clinged on to.

It was awful, made worse by the gloating from the bstards as Walkers money bank rolled them.
Re: Being in the lower leagues was hard !!!
Turning up at places like Doncaster's Belle Vue ground to find the usual admission price was covered with a piece of cardboard with an inflated price for Burnley fans.

Re: Being in the lower leagues was hard !!!
In a way it seems, looking back, that the lower league days were almost proper football. Ramshackle grounds, all with their funny but quaint little quirks. The grass bank at Wigan with its bus shelter, wandering around The Shay within touching distance of the game, Oxford United with its 11 different stands. Is it my bad memory that behind the goals at Belle Vue was below pitch level?
Yes the football on offer, was at times awful to watch but it was honest, no prima donna multi-millionaires who cry when they get mud on their bootlaces or heaven forbid the club forgets the birthday cake.
Pies, beer and twixes at a reasonable price and you could stand on the longside with your pint in hand and could still watch the game live from the beer queue. Pies were also sold off cheap at the end of the game, no closing of the shutters just because a ball was about to be kicked.
The atmosphere was so different, it almost felt like a family club when you could literally count heads by half time and every conversation echoed around the place. Can’t hear the players shouting at each other anymore either, its made it all a bit disconnected.
Do i want those times back? Not in a million, happy I was their though to appreciate what we have now.

I don't care what anyone says, the Jimmy Mullen era was one of the most
exciting times, support and atmosphere wise, to be a Claret.
Great days.

Re: Being in the lower leagues was hard !!!
It would be a "pointless thread" to someone who has never watched Burnley in the bottom division
The early to mid 90's were by far the best times watching us (in my lifetime). Proper banter at away grounds (and home), proper singing and atmosphere of the Longside, no falling around or diving when someone clipped a players toes, cult heroes, huddling around while you got soaked with snow and ice from non-rooved terraces, proper pies... the list could go on

Re: Being in the lower leagues was hard !!!
The changing of admission prices was a fairly regular thing for when
the mighty clarets were in town.
One instance I remember particularly well was at Lincoln, when one of my
mates decided that enough was enough and went into the town and bought
some CD 's instead and met the rest of us after the game.

Some of them seem strangememories now. Hereford away where the ex wife and son in a pushchair were just able to wander in to the away end for free 15 mins before the end having been shopping on town for the first 75. And just find us as there were so few people there.
Filling the old railway sleeper and cinder stand at Rochdale.
Sunbathing on top of the dugout during the game at Cardiff away.

How the worm has turned though, bfcjg wrote:It was awful, made worse by the gloating from the bstards as Walkers money bank rolled them.

My first game was Torquay United at home in 1988,banter was good, less said about the footer the better, looking back to the old division 4 there were some big clubs,Burnley,Wolves,Bolton,Blackpool,Cardiff,i think Swansea played at that level also, all of these teams have recently graced the Premier League, whether such change could happen now is doubtful for teams at that level without major investment, but fans have to have belief other wise there would be no point attending.

The announcer at Northampton announcing the (unusually large) attendance and adding "welcome Burnley!!!"
Re: Being in the lower leagues was hard !!!
The football was terrible but the away games as a day out were brilliant at times when I think back to the 80's.The togetherness an number of Burnley fans was immense, more often than not we had more fans than the home teams it seemed.

You are pointless. I'm beginning to think you are Saxoman, you are that annoying. If not, then a pointless troll, I would pay good money to have you barred from here, tosspot.mohamed69 wrote:What a pointless thread.
Oh, and BTW, Rochdale away in our splendid green and black away kit, took my young brother on, stood in front of Rocky, poor lad was covered in Rocky spit and had learned at least ten new words by the end. I think we lost
