Re: Madrid Trip
Once went to a cafe for breakfast which was a box in the stadium. Quite expensive but great experience and a great Spanish ham breakfast for me. Dont go on a match day though, you'll be paying a fortune and probably have to book years in advance!!! Quick google search and it's called real cafe bernaubeu. The seats in the stadium are very fancy, screens in front of the seats and arm rests - not quite as good as the wooden ones in the turf though.

Re: Madrid Trip
Walking tour is a good shout head to Plaza Mayor and look for the brollies (obviously you'll want an english speaking one). The cost is what ever you think appropriate at the end.
Prado is good €40 will get you a guide for an hour, worth it IMO.
Royal palace is decent and fairly sensibly priced.
Both parks are good but require time and weather.
Restaurants I enjoyed were Preciados, Gramada (they were geographically close to each other) try to avoid eating in Plaza Mayor, great setting but the quality is poor and they charge like a wounded rhino.

Keep your hand on your wallet ..Watch out for the "Gitanos"(Pikeys) trying to rip you off as you walk down the streets.. Be careful how much you pay for a "Puta" ..
Don't pay inflated prices for drinks and if all else fails shout "jodase hijo de puta " then set off at a gallop..
Disfrute su vacacion amigo...UTC...KTF

MrsNRC and I will be there over Thanksgiving..... I’ve never been and I’m a bit meh about it as Barcelona is a favorite city of mine, so I’ve got in my head I won’t enjoy it as much

Re: Madrid Trip
Fantastic city, perfect location for a mini-break with the missus.
We went Vicente Calderon for Atleti - Barca.
Metro Bistro is a great little place to eat, not too pricey for a fairly refined menu. It's close to Templo de Debod which is also worth a visit.
Prado museum and Reina Sofia are fantastic galleries displaying Picasso, Velasquez, Goya etc.
Ciebeles square has some awesome architecture.
The Royal Palace (as mentioned) is a solid half-day visit.
Plaza Mayor and the historic streets and squares around it are very atmospheric. Authentic, good value tapas and wine can found at reasonable prices in some of the lesser known plaza in this area.
Eat churro!
Go to a Flamenco club (honestly)!

I prefer it to Barcelona to be honest, it's less 'touristy' if that makes sense.NRC wrote:MrsNRC and I will be there over Thanksgiving..... I’ve never been and I’m a bit meh about it as Barcelona is a favorite city of mine, so I’ve got in my head I won’t enjoy it as much

Yes and yes,
San gines for the churro (just because I like the art deco influence)
Don't rule a bull fight out either (not everyones cup of tea admittedly but a must for full cultural immersion)

Did the wonders of the internet and Trip Advisor pass you by? Or did you just feel the need to ask a stupid question on here to tell us you're going to Madrid?Hbclaret007 wrote:Off to Madrid in a couple of weeks -

Re: Madrid Trip
Aw thanks clarinet - I completely forgot about using the internet and Trip Advisor
And how stupid of me to think that fellow clarets might have been to Madrid too.
Sorry you aren't feeling very well

I rather suspect that Clarinetclaret had had quite a bit to drink last night, based upon the times and content of his posts.

Re: Madrid Trip
So why would you ask on here then? A couple of posters may have been where as on trip advisor there are literally thousands of reviews, tips and forum posts about Madrid . Like I said you just want us to know you're having a jolly.Hbclaret007 wrote:Aw thanks clarinet - I completely forgot about using the internet and Trip Advisor![]()

Re: Madrid Trip
There is a bar opposite the ticket offices, city end, of the Bernabeu. Live PL pre-match and grub if you need.
My favourite city. A Sunday in the Retiro Park has some great street entertainers.
Otherwise all the usuals:
Royal Palace
Cathedral
Plaza Mayor
Prado
Shopping area around Sol
so much more
enjoy.

Re: Madrid Trip
Great advice from several posters. I was there for a long w/end Nov-2015. Great weather, as well as enjoying all the cultural stuff. I was also there in 1992, saw the Bernabeu and a flamenco show was seriously good.Hbclaret007 wrote:Off to Madrid in a couple of weeks -

Re why ask on here rather than look at Trip Advisor? I'd do it because many of the posters on here have great experience - and we are all Burnley fans. Yes, I'm sure there are lots of genuine people who post on TA, but there's no g'tee that everyone is. Picking your social media is a good choice.
And, easy public transport from the airport to the city centre.
Enjoy.

The Cable car over Madrid.
Retiro park, great place for people watching and has about six cafes, massive boating lake and street entertainers.
The metro is superb for getting about.

Currently in Dubrovnik and going to Cavtat and Mostar purely because of recommendations on here and the old place.Clarinetclaret wrote:Did the wonders of the internet and Trip Advisor pass you by? Or did you just feel the need to ask a stupid question on here to tell us you're going to Madrid?
This is the very best travel advice centre.
