Halloween - Favourite Horror Film

What's your favourite horror film of all time?

There are some real classics out there and it's one of the finest genres that Hollywood has ever produced.

As much as I love the Hammer films of the 60s and 70s my ll-time favourite would be Stanley Kubricks The Shining which is a masterpiece of suspense and growing horror. It's one of the few films out there which is genuinely scary.

Not the scariest, but Stephen King's "IT" has always been a fave. The recently release was better in some parts to the original, but not in others. For instance Tim Curry was the better clown. As for scariest, probably Halloween with Michael Myers, or Friday the 13th with Jason Voorhees but not seen any for years. The Exorcist, if anything, was more funny than scary.

I also love The Shining. The Omen is very good as well.

However, the one that most frightens me is Blair Witch. You don't see much but I think that's the beauty of it...a sort of psychological thriller.

Remember watching 'A nightmare on Elm street' on a hooky video back in about 1985. Genuinely scared the bejesus out of me as a 13 year old. I think it was on some channel or other last Halloween and I ended up watching it again finding it hilariously bad.

One that sticks in my mind from years ago (no pun intended) is 'Phantasm' (with the 'Tall man' and the silver ball thingy that whizzed about the corridors of a funeral parlour and if it struck someone would drill into their head!)

The first Friday 13th film was also quite well done for a 'slasher' film.

Of the more recent ones I thought Woman in Black' with Daniel Radcliffe was very good, creepy and made you jump but wasn't gory.

Not really keen on the 'found footage' type horror films like 'Blair Witch' and 'Cloverfield' although 'of that genre, 'Apollo 18' was quite watchable.

Alien is my fav, yeah ok its classed as sci fi, but the tension throughout the film is gripping, Halloween is a classic too

Black and white television adaptation of 'Oh Whistle And I'll Come To You My Lad' starring Michael Hordern - possibly made in the 60s.
The story is unnerving when you read it, but that adaptation captured the character of the story and somehow amplified it.
Terrifying for a young 'un and still powerful when they showed it more recently.
I think scary films in black and white films are often scarier than scary films in colour.

I've never found stuff like Hostel or Saw to be that particulary scary. If anything, splatter special effect bonanaza's, like "Final Destination' have me in hysterics.

Stuff like The Vanishing is more scary because of the growing tension.

We're so desensatized nowadays that splatter is almost like a cartoon, it's just too obvious.

I love the original 'Scream' from 96. It reinvented the horror genre and whilst not in any way scary, it's just a fun movie.

The other usuals are Halloween, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Nightmare on Elm St, Exorcist, Polterguist etc.

I'm not a fan of slasher films. So I'll go for The Fog (1980) and Dracula - the BBC adaptation staring Louis Jourdan. It's stays close to the novel, unlike many other adaptations.

Re-Animator, Suspiria, April Fools Day, Dellamorte Dellamore, American Werewolf in London, Deep Red and Don't Look Now are a few of my faves. Does Eden Lake count as a horror?
