It was only meant to be a process, I assumed it was something they'd already thought about, I didn't mean to give them a whole new idea etc
Anyway it's my name on the paperwork copy they've got
Very pleased with how it went, they've got 2 other people to interview in the next week.
I met the bloke I lost out to last time, turns out he came from Ferrari so he was clearly the better person for the job.

I didn't get the job.
I got to the final 3, just not quite good enough to get over the finishing line.
I've learnt a lot though and I can take away the fact I was able to do something that impressed someone who was part of the original F1 road car team.
Thanks for the help and advice from all of you.

Hard luck Sidney, disappointing for you but be thankful for what you've got. Less travelling time is something to be valued and most of us can't win every time.

Cheers Clegg.
I've got a job I really enjoy and it would take something special for me to leave it, hence this effort.
Like you say, being close to home is something I value, especially the easy hours when I look at other people in national motor factors.

Unlucky, old boy.
At least you took the opportunity to put yourself up to the test.

sometimes it's just not meant to be, my mother had all kinds of sayings for me, most of which I never understood at the time. One door closes another happens, you will look back and see it was better in the future that this did not happen.
Funny how I have started saying exactly the same to my children and they look at me funny, probably the same look I gave my mother all those years ago. However at least you are open to change and seizing what you perceive to be a better opportunity for you, which I applaud.

I'm very good at what I do, to the point my current employers keep resisting my attempts to change jobs within my company.
I've got my work/family balance right as it stands because where I work is in the same town as where I live.
A few years ago I just missed out (made final 2) on a job at one of the top car companies in the world, the actual dream job and that job is available again, 3-4yrs after I last applied.
The only issue is its approx 1 half- 2 hours drive each way everyday and the pay isn't much more than I'm on now.
It is however a prestigious company with all the pressures that would entail, including longer hours where required.
I'm just wondering what some of you would do if you were in my position?
I work for blue chip, prestigious company. The pressures are immense. Hence out of our team of 7, 4 have had nervous breakdowns, one of those being me.
It's your choice but if I had my time again, I would stay at a smaller company.

I feel both lucky and unlucky if that makes sense.
I've got a job I enjoy, with good hours, mates there and of course I get to spend the weekends and evenings doing what I want too, so I'm always lucky.
Unlucky because it was my final effort to get into the big league.
I won't be trying again, I'm proud of what I did during the interview and the positive response I got, because I also know the person who got the job would've been much better than me and I think I'm great at what I do.

Don't do yourself down, the person who got the job probably has someone who knows someone which got them the job.
Big companies are terrible for that sort the of thing.
I am currently sat in a hotel having driven for 3 hours after work for a 3 day meeting. That's s Friday setting off back home at 5 tomorrow up the M6. To come back Sunday night till 5 pm Tuesday for a compulsory meeting.
I do really love my job but why not mon to weds.

For balance, I work for one of the biggest companies in my field. I wouldn’t go to a smaller company given the choice.

Hi Sidney, no shame in being in the final 3 - always better than not giving it a go - and, great that you have a job you enjoy.
When I've found that I've missed out, it's either been that the successful candidate has experience/skills that I didn't have or the hiring manager felt they had a better fit with the successful candidate. This one can be hard to judge in interviews - and later experience may prove that they didn't quite get this right.

I lost out to a bloke who'd worked for Ferrari last time.
I've probably lost out to a candidate of similar experience and I'm fine with that, best person won etc.

Interesting thread. Unfortunate not to get it but it is all about what floats your boat.
I went for my dream job a decade ago and got it, with a huge commute despite growing family commitments.
Turned out it wasn’t what it said on the tin, so to speak. Jacking it in and doing nothing prior to setting up on my own, was in hindsight the best thing I have ever done. I now work part time in my 40s and will never be rich but have a work life balance to die for, or perhaps to live for.
Sometimes you have to be totally out of it to see the truth about what you want to do with the rest of your life.

Got home at 8:30 tonight after the fire on the M6.
8 hour meeting and 4 hours on the motorway.
The joys.
On balance I know I am lucky to do the job I do.
Sidney, sorry you didn't get the job buddy.
