What, the Prince of WALES?tybfc wrote:I'm sure that I have read over the years that James far preferred his times at Swansea than at the Turf.
That is up to him of course.
This misunderstanding about the game on Saturday however seems to fall totally at his feet and Burnley are at no way at fault.
I would prefer somebody doing the half time draw who thought more of my club than the opposition.
Give Prince Charles a ring.

Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
Like a few have mentioned taffy can be somewhat difficult.
He resided on my street for a few years,we used to chat in the local and played in the same pub team.I got on with him because I'm easy going and as a kid he was my hero.
But one day he nearly pushed his luck a bit too far,he banged on my door to complain about my lad.can't recall what his problem was exactly...my lad playing knock a door run perhaps.
Anyway, cut the story short, his tone and attitude wasn't the best on this occasion,Idol or no Idol..."Leighton,just F*** off out of my sight"
Never spoke to me again.
However,I still love him for what he gave me & Burnley fc.

Broke my heart when James left us the first time for £300,000 to Derby, one of our greatest ever as indicated by his legend picture at the Turf, come on Burnley get on the phone to him its only a halftime draw with a couple of kids dressed in football kits ffs.

Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
I idolised Leighton James as a kid. I met him once at sportsman's dinner. The expression "never try to meet your heroes" was borne out, even if his feet weren't made of clay.
Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
So......summary of the thread would be that we all loved Taffy as a player but he is an arsehole off the pitch.
Given this maybe things are not as they have been reported and the club have not done anything wrong.
He's had a chip on his shoulder about the club for a good while now so would it be a real surprise that he is embellishing the events a tad to get back at the club ?

Taffy is just very good at his job.
When football was his job, he was superb at it.
Now he is employed as a professional gobshite by the South West Evening Post. He's superb at that too, in fact he's one of the biggest gobshites around.

No. A summary of the thread would be that people are miffed that anyone from BFC would find anything bad about a little kid wearing a swansea shirt next to Leighton James regardless of whether he was bringing another child wearing Burnley colours or not. It’s stupid and reflects on the club badly

Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
James is one of the best Burnley players I can remember. I was star struck when he drove around my neighbourhood in Cheshire, he was with Mick Docherty and Mike Summerbee, Tommy Docherty lived up the lane behind my house.
I seem to recall when he played against us, sticking his fingers up at the longside after he got some stick from the fans.
Still a legend though. I wouldn't care if his grandkids wore Burnley and Swansea kits.

We've been discussing this as well, of course we have.
We don't think that Burnley fans would abuse a 3 yr old for walking on the pitch in the wrong shirt.
End of story.

Burnley owe a great debt to Leighton James and any modern day player with half of his ability would be able to afford to buy the Bob Lord stand let alone stand in front of it and he should be welcomed back and accommodated . He will be remembered for nearly as long as Sean Dyche.
Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
Didn't he once say "all Burnley fans are bastards" ,I remember my Mum objecting to that .
Met him a couple of times and got on OK with him ,he definitely had an attitude though , but that probably helped him to get where he got .

Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
I remember him being on some North West TV sports quiz some years ago. He was representing Burnley. Can't remember the name of it
A question was "On the front of the Rovers shirt which side is the blue half on" He got the answer wrong then proclaimed that he hated them anyway
Always been ok in my book

Taffy played in both of our wins over Rovers in the 1978/79 season.
Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
You always got a tingle when he got the ball on the left wing. If he was on form he was unstoppable. For the younger fan think of a better crossing Gareth Bale.

Hope ur right.
As bfcjg says, he was unbelievably good at his best. I remember the tingle of excitement well.
In recent times, only super glen and Robbie have generated that feeling of expectation.
Really hope this **** had been resolved and super taff makes it. I’ll happily give up my bene & hot to applaud him again.

Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
From what I understand it has been a misunderstanding with Taffy going off on one as is his way. I do know that a lot of effort at this end was being made yesterday to resolve the issue. Another Welshman, currently working for Swansea, is I believe on standby for the half time draw.

Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
Met him lots of times. Always found him to be a decent sort. Also, always realised that he had an edge to him which which would readily be shown when he was wrong way out.....All top sportsmen need that edge to achieve their potential. Not all show it in their personal lives.
Great for our club from what I remember and who would really give a damn about about his grand-kid wearing a white shirt? Any moron who booed the kid wants to check themselves out.

Re: Leighton James rejects special guest invite
I do not think for one minute any Burnley fan would boo a 3 year old kid in a Swansea shirt - a Blackburn shirt maybe !
As suspected this sounds like a story that has been blown up by a typical Taffy tantrum and was a simple misunderstanding.
I know the club gets a lot of criticism but from the outside they always seemed to treat its ex players well. Sometimes the ex players don't reciprocate or expect too much from the club because they know the fans adored them.

Leighton James. One of the very few WORLD CLASS players ever to pull on a Burnley shirt. Linked up superbly with the excellent left half back Doug Collins. He would ghost past the opposition right back and deliver an absolute pinpoint cross onto the head of Paul Fletcher or Ray Hankin.
Welcome back to Burnley, Leighton.

He was talking in the foundation bar pre match when we were about to get promoted from the Chsmpionship. He kept getting interrupted because another promotion rival were playing ( Derby I think). He was completely relaxed about it but I had heard he was temperamental before that.
