A hand writing expert has worked out that Teresa May is weak, gullible and clearly a secret Remoaner. He made his claim after analysing her signature on the £40 billion cheque she wants to give the EU.

Ringo: So you won a referendum. Apart from bragging rights what have you got to show for it? A government that is dysfunctional and hasn't got a clue what it's doing doesn't look like much of a prize. It isn't over till the fat lady sings so I'd save your crowing until you have something tangible.

If brexit wasnt to happen. Then democracy ends.

May I remind you of what top Remoaner, Paddy Ashdown, said about carrying out the result of the referendum

https://youtu.be/-Bv_1z2lFlw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"I will forgive no one who does not respect the sovereign voice of the British people once it has spoken whether it is a majority of one per cent or 20 per cent.

When the British people have spoken you do what they command. Either you believe in democracy or you don’t."

I agree with Paddy.

Do you?

If Ashdown's words are relevent then so are Farage's when he commented on a possible 52-48 result.

Funny how you never seem to mention that one though, isn't it?

Strange isn't it that those who are supposedly so keen on democracy are terrified of a democratic vote to verify the final deal - which of course would involve those who it directly affects, (i.e. the electorate at March 2019, not the vote that we had in 2016 in a non-binding referendum that the hapless Cameron managed to rig against himself!)

Hi IT, not singling you out - others have said the same.

Don't you think it's a little odd to be part of a club where one member is out of step with the others and the only thing that member can do is vote down/veto the things the other club members want to do?

Isn't it much better, if this is the case, for the member who is out of step to "step aside" and leave the club - and wish all the other members of the club every success with their future plans.

There was someone on the radio this morning - I'm not sure whether he was a Brit or someone in Brussels. He made the familiar comment that "the UK cannot be better off outside the EU, than the UK was inside the EU." (Maybe I've not recalled his exact words). I think this misses the point, if the UK was out of step with (some of) the EU plans, both the UK and the EU27 can be better off by the UK leaving the EU. If this was understood, then a new relationship would be very easy for everyone to conclude.

I've heard that argument before, Paul, and I think it's a pathetic rationalisation. We weren't just "in a club", we need the EU to maintain the economic prosperity we've gained because we were a part of it. And at the same time we needed it to have protection from the neo-liberal tendancies of corporations-first, people-second governments that we keep voting in with absolute power based on minority vote-shares.

Without the EU we're in danger of becoming like America. We might have been straining at the leesh to head in America's direction while in the EU, but you don't let go of the leesh, against your better judgement, just because the dog wants to play with the traffic.

We're leaving the EU, fine, but don't pretend we're not going to be royally ****** over by the very people that this whole nonsense was supposed to be about sticking it to, because just like the 2008 economic crash, the rich will be perfectly fine and any additional expenses they experience will be passed onto the poor. Worker's rights will be gutted to make us more attractive for investment, we're facing decades of zero wage growth after almost a decade already of zero wage growth. Tax revenue is well below what was expected which puts our crown jewel health service at risk of privatisation, further Americanisation - and for what? The ability to do all this to ourselves? The ability to do those anti-immigration things we already had the power to do but didn't because it would hurt us? It's ******* insanity, but even collectively that's not the most gauling part. I don't mind us being completely retarded, but the worst part is watching the very people who are going to be hurt the most by all this strut around like they've not just ****** themselves.

Edit: So i've chosen to just watch it all and laugh when at everything that comes our way, because we deserve it. I've tried to help people see how they were about to cut their own balls off any they did it anyway. So there's nothing left to do but to sit back and watch them struggle to keep a "I meant to do that" face.

Hi IT, thanks for your response.

Obviously, we look at these issues a little differently. I'm not looking to "rationalise" a decision - whether the decision was "leave" or "remain." I'm examining whether it is fair to remain in a club where that member only wants to stop others doing what they want to do. I think that's a very negative way to look at membership of a club. Yes, I agree, that the UK has grown, economically as a member of the EEC/EU. I think it's reasonable to attribute a large part of the vision for the single market to the UK, But, there are also other things where the UK is out of step with some of the other large member states - not least the creation of the Eurozone. It is right that the UK did not adopt the euro. I continue to have concerns that the EU will lend to take actions to defend the euro that will not benefit the EU members outside the Eurozone - and that either the EU Eurozone members would force the UK out, or we step aside to give the Eurozone the opportunity to survive.

I'm not sure what you mean by "neo-liberal tendancies of corporations-first, people-second governments" - are you drawing a distinction between the corporations in the UK and the corporations in the other EU member states? Are you suggesting that the "profit motive" isn't as strong for corporations in Germany, for example, as it is in the UK? Or, are you comparing France's 35 hour working week with the UK's working time directive "opt outs?" (You know that Macron wants to relax the rules around 35 hours - for the sake of the French economy and their living standards).

Let's discuss the NHS another time. I've made the argument before on this mb that the NHS should be reformed, that "free at the point of use, funded by taxation" is the wrong model - that we need to end the NHS being a "political football" and that all the large EU member states (excluding UK) have insurance funded national health services - with insurance for the poor funded by surcharges on the insurance of the better-off - and I understand that the health outcomes are better in these countries than they are in the UK. There's no need for a reformed NHS to adopt a USA model.

The "very, very, very rich" i.e. billionaires and multi-tens of millions, millionaires, will always be fine whatever the system and whatever the economic situation - but, they are less than 0.1% of the population. Even if we took it all away from all of them the rest of us just wouldn't notice.

I'd prefer not to blame the "ordinary" man and woman for the way they voted, whichever side of the referendum they voted. I do criticise our political leaders for the way they've led the country: politicians of all parties have let us down. There should have been more open discussion of things the politicians were doing, the decisions they were making, the agreements they were entering into for perhaps 3 decades before the referendum. There should have been more effort to help the electorate understand what was being agreed to "in our name." Yes, I'm going back to a time before the Maastricht Treaty.

I think Article 50 was part of the Lisbon Treaty. Article 50 should have been drafted a lot better and be a lot more comprehensive. It should have addressed the financial situation of a country choosing to leave the EU - whether that member state was a net contributor or a net beneficiary. And, it should have laid out options for the future relationships post-leaving. If Article 50 had been drafted properly then all the "confusion and chaos" (on all sides) that we are now in the middle of could have been avoided. Perhaps more importantly, the referendum campaigners - on both sides - could have explained clearly what would be the benefits of either a majority remain or leave vote. But, I'm sure we all regret, that didn't happen....

Nothing on that will solve anything

Its (at best) a "look what we should have done".

Hell, we can all do that.

What we shouldn't have done is triggered Article 50 until we were ready for it. And what we definitely shouldn't so is set ourselves a date where we "must leave the EU". The only reason is to keep people like Cash and Farage calm, it does the country no good at all.

I'm not a massive fan of the remain fanatics who'd ignore the referendum result, but equally the Brexit fanatics who think the vote meant the uber free market free for all really **** me off.

The election after the referendum was fought for by the Tories on the platform of the hardest Brexit imaginable. They lost seats, but still want to push it through.

I'll get by with Brexit, but a Brexit pushed through by (at best 10% of the voting population) will never get my support. And thats before we get into the other non-economic ratifications of the decision.

I think, just now, it's finally dawned why we found ourselves on opposing sides in the referendum. You (and, I think, many remain voters) have made the assumption that the above is a given. Whereas I only think all this might happen. Your prediction essentially assumes a permanent neoliberal agenda by our own government going forward. I have to say, given the last 35 years, it would be reasonable to assume this will also be the case for the next 35 years. But I think the tide has turned against neoliberalism. As each day passes more and more (both here and globally) are realising the 'trickle down', 'A rising tide lifts all boats', 'privatisation brings efficiency' and 'tax cuts for the rich pay for themselves' (a.k.a the Laffer Curve) economic agenda was a complete and utter con.

Far from the EU preventing a slide towards a free-market wasteland, I think it might have been pushing us towards one. The Maastricht Treaty, after all, is a very neoliberal treaty (e.g. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 88796.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ), and the UK is way, way to the economic right now when compared to 1975. Almost all the social protections enshrined in EU law we already had when we joined.

Now we're heading out of the EU, the result of the next election is critical as to whether you or I turn out to be right. But let's be honest, the status quo prior to the referendum was pretty bloody awful, and seemed to me to be getting worse by the year.

If that was true ITBYW, then Lab would be massively ahead in the polls.

They are not, despite this lot being the worst government in living memory.

That should tell you a hell of a lot.

Nowt wrong with that at all, nice and short is a hell of a lot easier to read while trying to watch MOTD.

To me, you are not wrong, but there are enough people who look at JC, look at his voting record on stuff and his historic stances and think "I like him, but he did say that, and he did vote for that and he campaigned for that, and....."

I can't help thinking that a Lab front bench without JC, O'Donnell and Abbott would be streets ahead in the polls.

To me, you are not wrong, but there are enough people who look at JC, look at his voting record on stuff and his historic stances and think "I like him, but he did say that, and he did vote for that and he campaigned for that, and....."

Not if the alternative front bench comprised Owen Smith, Stephen Kinnock, David Miliband, Hilary Benn and Liz Kendall. They'd have been absolutely decimated.

Well, we'd go back to the polls again then wouldn't we?

Terrible gov, and Lab level in the polls.

Something not right somewhere, and speaking as someone who voted Lab last time, I need greater clarity on their position on Europe before I'd vote for them again.

'Lexit' would be almost as $hit as a Singapore-on-Thames brexit. I'd prefer it to the hard-right brexit, but isolationism (...because in spite of the 'global Britain/empire 2.0' nonsense peddled by the govt, that is what it is) will not have a happy ending in the 21st century.

I didn't know we had a name, had to look it up. I suppose this is a reflection of how the free-market fundamentalists dominated the referendum debate. It turns out I'm a 'Lexiteer' (I think I might be the only Lexiteer on uptheclarets. As it happens though, I'm no longer convinced leave was indeed the correct choice).

So true. The left-wing case for secession has been almost neglected, both pre and post referendum. I get the argument: the EU is an impediment to the implementation of socialism. Whilst I completely share your grievances about neoliberalism, (and such grievances informed my voting for Corbyn in the Labour leadership elections), I don't trust the oligarchy *cough* excuse me...I mean, our own politicians to deliver anything closely resembling a fair society post-brexit, and (this is going to be an unpopular opinion) I trust our electorate-enthralled by hate, gossip and pornography masquerading as news-even less. The British establishment seems more ideologically aligned to the States (no thanks) than continental Europe, our print media damagingly partisan. It's all turning out to be an absolute shitshow.

For those that wish to remain in the EU what does your ideal relationship within EU look like:

1. Reform - further and deeper integration and move towards federalisation

2. Reform - less Integration and move towards return of power back to nation states.

3. Status Quo.

4. Other

The main problem currently with brexit is the majority of our politicians want to remain inside the EU, and the referendum result was the wrong one as far as they are concerned. It either needs to be all in or all out as the EU are virtually impossible to negotiate with.

I'd love to see a low tax, low spend, low regulation Britain going forward.

I'm not sure that even 10% of the country want that.

One thing is really clear is that people want a lot more investment in public services, and whoever ends up in charge will have to promise that to end up in charge.
