You mean the EU have sacked more of their rule breakers than Tesco would have? I doubt it. £4 billion plus was spent in error in 2016. How many of the guilty or incompetent parties who spent it, have been sacked?

As for withdrawing my "lie", that can't be done, because there is no lie. Here's a quote from the article: "This meant that, for the first time since 1994, the accounts were given a “qualified”, rather than “adverse”, opinion. The auditors found that: “A significant part of the 2016 expenditure audited was not affected by a material level of error”."

A qualified audit report means that the audit report is not clean. It means it is qualified. There's no reason necessarily why you should know that. But as a matter of fact, there are three types of audit report: clean, where the auditors say the accounts are correct; qualified, where they say the accounts are correct apart from certain aspects; and adverse, where they say the accounts are not correct. These accounts, as specifically stated, are qualified - not clean.

The fact of your misunderstanding does not mean that the words you dodn't understand are not true. This audit report in 2016 was qualified.

But that is not what Brexiteers say.

They say the EU accounts have not been audited. And that is a lie.

No, i mean that the EU have more stringent rules than Tesco, so they have more rules to break.

Now bring back those goalposts - I should have known better than to expect you to stop lying. Leopards, spots etc.

Good news for womens rights at least.

This total, utter shitstorm shows no sign of getting any better soon and anyone who thinks we are going to be better off and that we haven't been damaged on the world stage should really be in a home.

And as the result of all this is going to be a Corbyn government, and massively increased immigration from the sub-continent, then the expressions on a hell of a lot of Brexiteer faces is going to be priceless.
I know!

Why do they call us "Remoaners"?? I've never laughed so hard in my life at Brexit, this idiotic government trying to deliver it and the ridiculous ideals of the people who voted for it.

It's like "Monty Python's Brexit".

I stand by that statement. The most recent report gives a qualified opinion. I can't think that that quote, from the exact fullfact.org article which you yourself quoted, is in any way controversial or open to doubt.

You say the audit report was clean; fullfact.org say it was qualified; I say it was qualified. I AM NOT LYING. I am taking fullfact.org's version of events in preference to yours - that may be a mistake, because it may be fullfact.org that is wrong and you are right. But in that case, I suggest you spend your energy explaining to fullfact.org why they are lying, and if you can get them to print a retraction, then and only then will I believe you.

I’ll make it easier for you again...

Error is not always the same as fraud or waste

Just because some money is paid in error doesn’t mean people all the people involved have deliberately tried to defraud the EU.

A small minority of the cases that the auditors look at each year involve suspected fraud. The UK’s Public Accounts Committee of MPs has concluded for years that the complexity of the EU’s spending programmes, which creates misunderstandings, contributes towards these errors.

It also doesn’t necessarily mean the money was ‘wasted’, just that it wasn’t paid out according to the rules. One way to run afoul of the rules, for instance, is to award an EU-funded contract directly without holding a proper bidding process. Even though the rules haven’t been followed, it's not always the case that another firm would have been able to put in a lower bid.

The Court explains:

“Our estimate of the level of error is not a measure of fraud, inefficiency or waste. It is an estimate of the money that should not have been paid out because it was not used in accordance with the applicable rules and regulations.”

The most common type of error is when people claim for costs they’re ineligible for, followed by procurement errors like the one discussed above.
Thanks for pasting what I've read.

Basics of it, the accounts are up to date, however until this last year there have been errors every year.
Some can be attributed to simple mistakes, some could be fraud.

Are the signed off?
Yup.

Are they saying it's clean?
Nope.

It isn't a qualified opinion on the EU accounts though, it's on the expenditure audit.

The auditors' report itself states:
The EU accounts for 2016 were prepared in accordance with international public sector accounting standards and present, in all material respects, a true and fair view of the EU’s financial results for the year and its assets and liabilities at the end of the year.

We were therefore able to give a clean opinion on the reliability of (i.e. ‘sign off’) the accounts, as we have done every year since 2007.

Do you think Theresa will be able to get that Billion back?

That was money well spent. Eh Brexiters?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The DUP just said no to the single market.

They took her money and ****ed her over :)

I can understand now why people voted "Leave", for the spectacle no? The bumbling, riotous, mindboggling incompetence of this Tory government is an absolute joy to watch.

I've changed my mind, can we have a second referendum?

They should make a film of this comedy called "Carry On Up The Brexit" starring Theresa May, Will Ofthepeople and Boris "Clinky Clinky" Johnson.
It'll be crap and stupid but over half the country really want to see it :)

Or you just want us to look like that.

It's still early days with posturing going on with both sides.
They can't even begin the main negotiations yet until they get over this N'Ireland issue, which all sides have stated they don't want a hard border.
At some point they'll all calm down and sort it out.

Come off it Sidney, the only people who think our current look is "good" crack one off over blue passports.

Because the British people were promised a lovely new unicorn, with everything that they ever wanted, its actually quite a shock seeing that some intelligent politicians still apparently believe its possible, and continue to torpedo any attempt to make us look like a country that isn't all over the shop.

Thats not going to be changed by positive posts about just how ace the UK is on social media btw, so lets knock that bullshit out of the park right now.

Cracking one off over passports is a whole new level of weird, even for this place

We'd look worse if we still ignored the wishes of the DUP.
It will calm down eventually and all get dealt with.

Then the EU can throw another obstacle in the way.

I'm still curious as to why the border is an issue BEFORE a trade deal is agreed upon, because it could still become a non issue dependant on the deal agreed.
Any ideas?

Yeah, because it was agreed on the very first day of meetings that the border, the citizens rights and money had to be sorted first.

We agreed to that in about three minutes, and have spent the next 18 months not actually trying to do anything about it, while people blame the EU.

One thing that people seem to forget about in the UK, and especially in the Brexit part of it, is that we are leaving them, not the other way around and its up to us to come up with solutions to problems 100% caused by us wanting to leave.

Hi Lancs, do you mind me asking one or two questions and trying to avoid adding to the "hysteria" and "personal abuse" that seems to characterise everyone's approach since the June 2016 referendum?

Didn't the negotiations on the terms of the UK leaving the EU start sometime earlier this year (2017), rather than immediately after the referendum? So, didn't the EU27 specify their first 3 requirements at the start of negotiations - and the UK say "ok, we will give it a try..." after first saying that this order would be "difficult?" So, not 18 months ago, more like 8 months ago (perhaps "18" is no more than a mis-type).

It's always puzzled me, yes, the UK has chosen to leave the EU, but why does that make it "up to us to come up with solutions to problems caused by us wanting to leave?" Wouldn't it be better that the UK and the EU27 work together, co-operatively, to find solutions for the changes requires to make the departure of the UK from the EU a success for both the EU and the UK? Who wins from it beginning a failure? Are there other areas of international relations where the "other side" gains from making the agreed change difficult?

I know it's not your position, alone, that "it's the UK's problem..." - and that this is also reflected in a lot of the media - and many politicians.

What do you think?

Sedatives? You misunderstand me Ringo, I'm on your side.

I never knew Carry On Up The Brexit would be so much fun or I'd have voted "Leave".

Just like you.

I never dreamed theTory government would have so much trouble or I'd have voted DUP and made Arlene Foster Prime Minister and woman in charge of Brexit.

Just like you.

I'm so glad I swapped sides.

I already feel more intelligenter.

Just like you.

Just to clarify Paul, you are aware that the three red lines of border, citizens rights and divorce bill were agreed in the very first session of the very first meeting between the EU and the UK?

Anything that happens after that is supposed to move us forward. Now the divorce bill is agreed (as far as we know) and the citizens has never really been an issue (because the Daily Mail isn't in charge of that) so the problem then becomes the Irish border.

The above thread from twitter helps explain the difficulties with that.

Unfortunately the Brexiteers in Government and on the street are the most obnoxious, deceitful shysters around, and make it impossible for any talks to go smoothly.

As Lancaster says, it is the UK leaving. It's high time those tasked with achieving a successful Brexit quit with the spoiled brat approach and sat down like adults to discuss properly.

Unlikely. I've been mostly spectating on this thread. I'll stay in my seat enjoying the match, thanks.

Your meme's have been hilarious for what it's worth btw. Just as long as you understand folk are laughing at you, rather than with you.

Just like you.

I never dreamed theTory government would have so much trouble or I'd have voted DUP and made Arlene Foster Prime Minister and woman in charge of Brexit.

Just like you.

I'm so glad I swapped sides.

I already feel more intelligenter.

I think ‘farce’ is the most appropriate word to be honest. You couldn’t make some of this stuff up. May calling an election in a fit of hubris and because the Labour Party are ‘dead’ under Corbyn. After essentially not bothering with a campaign because a huge majority was nailed on the country give her a slap in the face and tell her to stop taking the p***. With the Irish border as one of the most difficult post Brexit issues to solve she now has to go cap in hand to the DUP to keep her in power meaning that every decision taken on Ireland has to be approved by them first. She then somehow thinks that a plan that essentially pushes NI closer to the Republic rather than the UK, is going to be one that the DUP will be fine with.

May must be kept awake by nightmares over her calling an election, things would probably be significantly further on if she hadn’t.

I think one of the main reasons that Brexiteers hate May is that she gave the country a chance to go "**** you and your hard brexit" and boy, did they.

The possibility of a soft or even an non-Brexit followed by Corbynistas rule must be giving them nightmares.

They should have told the EU that the border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK will of course remain open; that's not negotiable. That should never have been raised. But if the EU wants to keep the Northern Ireland - Eire border fully open for free trade, both ways of course, that's fine too; if they don't, that's their business not ours.

May has already said there will be no need as far as we're concerned for a hard physical border; the EU has said that's what they want too; the "hard" border can be worked via paperwork and internet as it already is. If May had done that, and had taken the elementary precaustion of discussing it in advance with the DUP and with other parties including Sinn Fein, then the whole thing needn't be any issue at all except to the extent that the EU want to make it one.

I suspect it was the Brexiteers who pushed her into it.

Yet someone has just said it's the government who need to stop behaving like brats.
