Songs that still blow you away

Post by Svenster » Tue Dec 19, 2017 11:51 pm

Can't believe this is 38 years old. From 1979 Tubeway Army - 'Are Friends Electric'

Revolutionary then, still powerful now.

What are your killer tracks that still pack a punch today?

" Heartbreak Hotel " recorded 9th January 1956.... 62 years old next month, when the world went from " How much is that doggie in the window " and " Catch a falling star ", to the Rock age almost in one fell swoop,

Honorable mentions to " Brown eyed Girl ", Van Morrison ( 1967 ) and " The first time ever I saw your face ", Roberta Flack ( 1969 )

So many good ones on here and I can't really say because I'm an albums man first and foremost (Yes, Genesis, ELP, Floyd, King Crimson etc.) but if pinned down to one single it would have to be Sound of Silence by S&G, Paul Simon really excelled himself when he wrote this, possibly the best song ever written in my view (but then I could say that about so many).
Honourable mentions must also go to Days (Kinks), Come up and see me (Cockney Rebel) and Hallelujah (Cohen).
My favourite piece of music ever: Awaken by Yes (off the Going for the One album). This for me transcends music and almost becomes spiritual. 20 minutes of absolutely sublime music played by virtuoso musicians and delivered by Jon Anderson's souring vocals. Amazing to this day over 40 years on.

Great selection although Sheep is an unusual one from one of their least popular albums. Respect though for not going the obvious Comfortably Numb (which along with Echoes would have been mine from Floyd).

The list would go on forever, great shout though with Canned Heat and On the Road Again.

One you seldom hear but always gets the hair on the back of the neck to stand as brings back specific memories is In a Broken Dream, Python Lee Jackson (Rod Stewart Vocals).

Edit. Also
All day and all of the night...Kinks.
