Re: Driving Query
Problem is through, the left lane & right lane could both show A679, and both be correct. Wouldn't be surprise if they eventually put traffic lights on there like they seem to be doing with the rest of the roundabouts.
Re: Driving Query
Sammy don’t worry, you are fine in the left lane. I passed that way tonight and you are quite correct.

I’ll have a look at mine tomorrow and see if it’s clear. I went through at about 7.15 though so it might be too dark. The mini cutting in wrongly from the right should be plain enough mindRick_Muller wrote:That’s exactly what I planned to do because I’m a sadar5e

Re: Driving Query
There are three exits: left to Sainsbury (A679), straight ahead (little road) half-right to M65 and Gannow (also A679). And according to the road markings:
1. As you approach the roundabout, the left lane is for exits 1 and 2, the right lane is for exit 3.
2. As soon as you pass exit 1, the left lane becomes for exits 2 and 3, the right lane is for back the way you came.
This means that traffic which is correctly in the right hand lane for Gannow is being told to filter into the left lane which is already occupied by traffic going onto exit 2. Hence people who have always used the right hand lane for turning right will continue to do so, but will delay filtering over until after passing exit 2, as they have always done.
(The alternative approach, that all traffic for exits 1, 2 and 3 is for the left hand lane, and the right hand lane only dfor those who are turning back on themselves, is nonsense. As is the approach that the left hand lane is for people that want to use exit 3 for Gannow and the right hand lane for people that want to use it for the M65. The road people may be incopetent, but they're not quite complete idiots.)

Re: Driving Query
Did not know there are changes there as I haven't been to Burnley since November. Sounds like our "out" -of-town planners have screwed up another road system that was working perfectly well. LCC must have money to burn. I thought they had set up lights on both both Active Way roundabouts just to cause more chaos - just like the Westgate ones.
Anyway if coming from M65 past Asda I'll do what I always do when in doubt - take right lane and go all way round roundabouts 540 degree - that way I'll not annoy anyone and can safely exit road up past Kwik fit.

Last photo is the exit onto A679. Make your own minds up, but to me, the way to avoid trouble is take the left hand lane to travel towards Kwik Fit.

In the meantime I'm setting up a dashcam front and rear, and will be making sure my no claims are protected before one of the idiots in the wrong lane crashes into me.
I won't be letting them in, and anyone indicating because they're in the wrong lane will get a hit of the horn. If they do hit me I'll have the requisite evidence to prove they were in the wrong.

Re: Driving Query
This is the first time I have ever heard the term 'Spiral Roundabout' used.
How are people supposed to keep abreast of this stuff?
I only ask because I haven't had any correspondence from any government department and last time I checked there isn't and never has been an effective method of updating anyone on changes to traffic regulations and trends.
I have driven around this new layout several times from all the variable entry points and not really been phased by it though.
I do know where my light switch is though when driving in near dark conditions caused by adverse weather and also know how to use my Climate Control so my windows aren't steamed up when driving.
It's my pet hate!

Re: Driving Query
I knew A679 was written on the lane marking AFTER the Sainsbury's turning, thereby suggesting it's correct to be in the left hand lane if you're heading to Kwik Fit. The problem is that it's also on the right hand lane as you approach the roundabout, but this then quickly turns into M65E and sends you back from where you came, meaning people cut across. I personally think that in the current layout it's better to use the left lane. I will probably invest in a dash cam when I get my new car though.
Re: Driving Query
I can't make sense of why you'd have a right hand lane that is only to be used to go back on yourself to the M65E (since that's the only direction you can go from junction 11). The 2 most used exits on that roundabout (coming from Burnley College/Asda) are the A679 exits so to stick both of those in the same lane would be a ridiculous decision and surely defeats the point of the changes made to the roundabout.
I can only assume they've completely ballsed up the labels on the roundabout OR the arrows on the signs/labels before the roundabout as they're not compatible with each other. The signs / labels before the roundabout and common sense would suggest that the right hand lane is to carry on towards Kwik Fit and the M65 at Gannow top. The labels on the roundabout suggest that as soon as you're past the first exit the Town Mouse exit no longer exists.
Since the labels on the roundabout make the least sense I'm inclined to think that the right hand lane is for the Kwik Fit exit and the left is for Active Way/Town Mouse. Basically I think they've put the "A679" and "M65E" road markings on the wrong part of the roundabout, these should have been applied after the Town Mouse exit.

If people are using the left hand lane to approach the roundabout to turn right towards kwikfit, there will be plenty of accidents here. Once past the town mouse exit the left lane should be clear for the people in the right lane to filter over.

Re: Driving Query
Being in the right hand lane sounds like a sensible system, and has clearly worked well for years, but why is the left hand lane now marked as A679 after the Sainsbury's turning? Going off road markings, as most drivers do, that suggests people need to be in the left lane to go up to Kwik Fit.ClaretinMyBlood wrote:If people are using the left hand lane to approach the roundabout to turn right towards kwikfit, there will be plenty of accidents here. Re: Driving Query
Is it not saying to exit onto the A679 to move into the left lane?
I know what you're meaning, hopefully some new signs will be going up to help clear things up.
The key giveaway is the arrows (as shown in the dashcam snap above) on approach to the roundabout as to which lane to be in. The kwikfit exit is a right turn.
Basically left lane shows a left/straight arrow, meaning they are the directions you can head from that lane.

Re: Driving Query
I understand all the points, but if a driver is still in the right hand lane after entering the roundabout and intends going towards kwik fit, then they are in the wrong lane. If they then cut across someone who is in the left hand lane and cause an accident, then the blame is on them.ClaretinMyBlood wrote:If people are using the left hand lane to approach the roundabout to turn right towards kwikfit, there will be plenty of accidents here. The lane markings need re-doing for sure.
Re: Driving Query
Once the traffic lights are in use there will effectively be a stop line at the first set of lights.
You have to treat each set of lights separately with its own set of lane markings.
Traffic for sainsburys and royle rd in left hand lane, Kwik fit in right.
The next set of lights is at the entry from sainsburys - all change - Kwik fit traffic will have to merge with the Royle Road only traffic (presumably not that much) to be in the left hand lane to cross the stop line and be in the correct single lane to exit to Kwik fit. .
If you are in the RH lane at that point you will be directed back to the M65 (or run into the back of the queue of cars waiting at the lights round the corner having come down from sainsburys and trying to turn right to the M65 east).
The principle is sensible - the problem will be the short distance between the two sets of lights and the need for the majority of traffic to change lanes.

Heres another grab from just before the exit, right hand lane clearly M65E with a right arrow. I'm not saying there aren't issues with the markings, there obviously are, but if you are in the right hand lane entering the roundabout and going towards kwik fit, according to those markings you are in the wrong lane

How do these things get changed, does it have to wait until there's an accident? It's a really busy roundabout and I travel that way quite a lot. It'd be preferable if I didn't have to chance it on a daily basis.

Left hand lane at the entrance for a679/Sainsbury's and town mouse exit. R hand lane for a679/kwik fit and m65(e).
R hand lane moves into left for a679/kwik fit immediately after sainsburys exit. Stay in r hand lane for m65(e).
Looks simple enough for the style of roundabout but quite a small roundabout.

Yeah as we've established that's all well and good until you see A679 written on the left hand lane after the Sainsbury's exit has gone and before the Town Mouse exit...WadingInDeeper wrote:Left hand lane at the entrance for a679/Sainsbury's and town mouse exit. Re: Driving Query
If approaching in the right hand lane, the filter needs to take place where the red line is, not at the exit. But you'd need to be aware of people using the left hand lane as instructed by the lane markings.

Once the traffic lights are working it isnt really a roundabout but a series of traffic light controlled junctions with their own lane markings.
It would have made a lot more sense to turn the lights on at the same time as painting the lines - as it is its a shambles

You're not alone there JM, I've been driving nearly 40 years and I've never heard of a 'spiral roundabout' until today, nor have any of my 7 office colleagues aged 24-60!JohnMac wrote:This is the first time I have ever heard the term 'Spiral Roundabout' used.

Having read all the thread now I'm still not sure which lane to use.
Seems that technically if you want to carry on up past Kwikfit it should be the right hand lane.
Problem is once you are past the Sainsbury's turnoff and just past the Town Mouse turn off, according to the roadmarkings, you should then be in the left hand lane to go past Kwikfit but as the exit is only wide enough for one vehicle the chance of cutting someone up or being cut up yourself seems quite high, but hopefully once the traffic lights are operational this will reduce the risk as the merging traffic flow will be slowed down.
