Westwood should have brought their player down as soon as they got possesion, he had the opportunity but chose to throw his arms in the air and let him past.

They would have had a free kick 35 yards out and hopefully not be as lucky as Liverpool to then score unchallenged.

Reading about the goal you'd think Madley tackled our man.inside the box. As it was, it was on the half way line, 55 yards from goal. Both Westwood and Cork need to bring the man down, the cross should be defended better, and Long needs to be much much stronger.

The pull on Long aside, I thought the ref had a good game. We allowed ourselves to get distracted by something of anyone's control, when we should have concentrated on the ball.

What Madley did was pretty innocuous really - to say that cost us the goal when there was so much left to do to score is pretty ridiculous.
Don't think it was a foul on Long either - he needed to be a bit stronger but not blaming Long.

Our goal was a bit dubious and could have gone either way as there was definitely some contact between his arm and the ball before it went in.

The one really bad decision was the hand ball - their keeper was nearly on Belvedere Road - it wasn't even close and he should have had a red card.

The main reason we did not win though is because we did not go for Southampton. Whilst the stats were even and Pope made a great save i thought they were there for the taking. Their central defence was poor and had hardly played together. We looked more than comfortable but we are failing to get enough attempts on goal when we are dominating the play. We are rarely taking leads in the first half and when there is one goal in it most teams in this league are good enough to get at least one chance.

As average as Southampton were they are still able to bring on a full international player who cost £20m and he ends up scoring with once chance.

Ashley Barnes very brave to go in ahead of the keeper. Well done Ash. Gabbiadini is well behind Long when Long starts his move to the ball to clear. Long ends up off balance and downed, following a Gabbiadini tugging from the side. Ref staring right at it from just a few yards.

I predict we will get our one penalty when we are winning easily with moments to go (poss WBA) or when, for some reason we are 2 down with moments to go. Arsenal perhaps.

The referee didn't just get in the way, he looked to be deliberately obstructing him. He should have stopped the game once he realized that Southampton had won possession and re-started with a drop ball. That was just so unfair.

In law he cannot do that.

Deliberate handball isn't a red card offence unless it's a professional foul, and this wasn't a professional foul. His first touch was inside the box, so by the time he was outside the box and was handling the ball, the Burnley man (fairly sure it was Lennon?) was in the penalty area while the ball was outside the penalty area and heading towards the touchline.

It would have been different if he'd first handled the ball outside the box; but he handled it inside, and just "forgot" to let go.
