Can we catch Arsenal?
Can we catch Arsenal?
This question was asked in the Brighton v Arsenal thread but, rightly or wrongly, I felt it deserved its own thread.
Five points difference, nine games to go.
Realistically I don't think we'll do it. BUT you always need objectives in life and, perhaps above all, in sport.
Yesterday's win was vital for obvious reasons. But the performance was equally important (IMO). We played damn well and showed we hadn't forgotten how to play good football.
It's a given that SD will tell the lads we can catch Arsenal. We know his teams have character and he'll be telling them we can do it.

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
I think we will now the pressure is off and players are back from injury and playing for their place.
It will be close but I think we will edge it!
(Did I really say that?????)

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
Perhaps some fans look at the bigger picture and look at the opposition we played in that winless run, the injury list we had and the fact other teams couldn't capitalise on us not winning in "3 months". We are still 7th so we should be looking at catching a very rocky Arsenal team in 6th. I'm not saying we will but we should be looking it as our initial aim.mickleoverclaret wrote:No. Getting a bit giddy after a first win in 3 months...

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
Yes we can but with 2 clubs below us nearer to us than we are to Arsenal and further 3 clubs within 7pts we are more likely to drop to 8th than climb to 6th.
We should be setting our sights as high as realistically possible which is definitely 6th however id snap your hand off to take 7th now and hope one of the three top 6 clubs still in the cup go on to win it

Still got to play them yet and Wenger looks a lost man and his team looks like they can't be bothered turning up.
Go for it Clarets.

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
Our remaining fixtures, overall, are pretty nice. We'll need to do better than 1 point per game though (on average), so will no doubt need to pick up 3-4 more wins including beating them.
The fact we are discussing this is bonkers. What a season, eh.

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
Highly unlikely as it would probably involve having to win at the Emirates. Having said that, considering our shocking recent run it's a shame we didn't convert a couple of the draws into wins and we'd have been knocking on the door.

1 win in 12 and we are talking about catching Arsenal.
3-4 wins required to stay 7th. Let's not collectively spunk ourselves just yet.
Overall, great season, I think some of you need to get a grip though.

Bizarre post - not sure there is any collective spunking nor people without a grip, on this thread.ClaretAndJew wrote:1 win in 12 and we are talking about catching Arsenal.

Why not have such an aim? If we don’t achieve it, so what, but if we do, what an achievement on top of an already brilliant season.

Yes we can. We need to start attacking from the outset. Show no fear. We have had a great season, we are safe, so why not?

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
My thinking too. If anything, now is the time to think like this, now that we're safe. Target one for me, and I'm sure the club, was to cement our stay in the Premier League. Now we've done that, the pressure is off - let's go for it.DCWat wrote:Bizarre post - not sure there is any collective spunking nor people without a grip, on this thread.

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
Definitely Maybe.
Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
It is a massive ask due to the injury influenced run of late. Without that run the question would have been can we stay in front of Arsenal. Take their dubious goal off against us and the gap would have been two points.

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
If we had managed to avoid the injuries, especially to Brady and Defour, I think we would have caught them already.
Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
"1 win in 12 and we are talking about catching Arsenal."
I said I didn't think we would manage it. But there were, in my humble opinion, some mitigating circumstances during our winless run. I was very impressed by our performance yesterday. Yes, we played poorly in some of those matches but we also played bloody well in both matches against Manchester United, in the draw against City and the defeat against Liverpool.
You have to set yourself objectives. The first is to finish seventh which would be fantastic. And that is very much a possibility.
After that SD will push the lads to chase Arsenal. The season's not finished for him; we have a mini-season ahead of us and he'll want us to give it our best shot.

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
Unlikely but if Arsenal progress in the Europa League that may give us an advantage,we will probably have to win at the Emirates but we have already shown this season results are possible away to the top six.Arsenal's next game is Watford at home but Watford won there last term so that's no banker for the gooners.

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
If we go to the Emirates still in contention then it'll be an amazing achievement. But it'll be bloody hard going against 12 men.
I personally think Leicester will be the big one.

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
We can get within two points of em if we pull our fingers out at
West Ham next Saturday.
The Gunners don't play till Sunday and they're at home to Watford which won't be easy.
Also they travel to Milan midweek, so all in all, could be a good weekend.
Let's hope so.

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
I can picture it now. Burnley move ahead of Arsenal after a 1-0 victory at the Emirates courtesy of a highly controversial 95th minute penalty....
Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
It's about time we forget the old chosen few line. If we go out with real intent to WIN games the 12th man(REF) will not have any say in the matter. Burnley have got what it takes despite what the elite want.
So many times we have lost with last minute desicions. Let's not give them that opportunity . Get 2/3 up and keep attacking.
My only critism is sitting back when we are a goal in front.
We need to be at least 2 to obviate the 12th man

Re: Can we catch Arsenal?
Not a particularly hard fixture but a draw against a desperate Stoke would put Ars on the same points - if these results pan out.boatshed bill wrote:That looks a bit of a possibility TBF, but what is their other fixture?

Sadly that is not part of any prem league script.scouseclaret wrote:I can picture it now. Burnley move ahead of Arsenal after a 1-0 victory at the Emirates courtesy of a highly controversial 95th minute penalty....
An irrefutable 95th min pen would have to be the case.
