cyclists and potholes

Post by claretnproud » Sun Apr 08, 2018 4:14 pm

I have noticed recently that the roads are just getting worse and worse regarding potholes which means rather than cycling near kerb I have to go wider in places. one particularly bad one is in between foulridge and kelbrook. Its about 100 yards before a tractor sign on the left. has anyone noticed just how bad the roads are disintergrating?

The roads are worse this year than they have been for a while, and they were knackered years ago; my Mrs has a Smart car and it jars you big style when you hit some of these caves. I'd hate to be on a bike hitting some of these, and it really is time the council did some serious work on our highways.

Really dangerous as a cyclist having to swerve to avoid one when there's a car behind.

Sometimes there's no option but to brace yourself and hit the hole if cars behind are too close.

Full marks to the person on one of the roads between Nateby and Pilling that has painted a huge circle around a definite wheel breaker with the words "F**king huge pothole" sprayed across the road.

The road from the top of Higher Trap down past Reedwood Riding Stables to the back of Read and Whins Lane is a deathtrap for cyclists. The potholes are dangerous even for a car, notwithstanding a regular stream down the 'road.' Even going slow down there on a bicycle is an obstacle course fraught with danger.

It's just as bad for motor cyclists, won't be long before there are some serious accidents due to people swerving to miss pot holes and hitting oncoming vehicles..

as a motor cyclist you pay road tax. If an accident was caused by a pothole would you feel you should stick a claim in. I even noticed it on Walton lane in nelson up near the park. the roads are just shocking.

No way. Hitting a pothole of a racing bike at 30 mph could easily end in death. I wonder how many cycle deaths in London are caused by potholes and vehicles and cyclists swerving or out of control as a result.

I'd prefer to see all our roads made safe for all our country,we have enough money to do this as well as helping other countries out, just don't give them as much until the roads have been repaired..

I'm not sure there is enough in the foreign aid budget to save the NHS and repair the roads to be honest, plus all the other things that people want it to be used for.

Myself and the other half are both cyclists we prefer off road but sometimes you can't avoid the roads and the potholes they are a bit of a disgrace. As well as being a cyclist the missus is a local councilor and with the elections looming she has been out on the knocker and virtually every resident wants to know whats being done about the potholes well it's a county issue but they have just taken delivery of 3 all singing all dancing machines to tackle the problem plus £ 2.5 million being put aside for the project, whether this is enough are not we will just have to wait and see.

While cycling last year, Iswerved to avoid a big pothole but in doing so hit a smaller one which punctured my front and rear tyres. I only had one spare tube so had to repair one. I was on the route of a local sportive and the repair failed twice (not patient enough to let the glue dry properly). It was only the constant stream of passing sportivers that stopped me from having a paddy and chucking my wheel into the field.

I'm off for a week's cycling in Northern Mallorca with some buddies next week. The roads are excellent by all accounts - apart from the bloomin' hills !
I know weather conditions are different and useage a bit lighter over there but it does seem odd a supposedly wealthy nation such as ours can't even have roads that are in a safe condition.

The road from nelson star cycling club through to the old bus station in nelson is becoming virtually unusable for cycling on and driving on for that matter. Potholes and maniac drivers are the problem.

The state of our roads is a disgrace and an embarrassment when we have visitors to the country - the rate the roads are deteriorating on all main road routes as well as in every street and on estate roads is unbelievable. Councils have had so much money taken from them by central government in its desire to cut the deficit that there are priorities for local government spending and road maintenance is at the bottom of the list. Remember this when we come to the May elections. The cost of road maintenance is going to be huge when a properly funded process of repair would have saved more money in the long term. Never mind Brexit, the government should be watching out for "road wrexit"

Load of **** isn't it. Our taxes haven't gone down, yet we are losing vital services, be it police numbers on the street to the shocking state of our roads.

All to subsidise a deficit I didn't contribute to. This country is one big pothole joke!

CHEWBACCA. I couldn't agree more with your observation. I have complained several times to LCC. That section of road has been in the same condition for over two years now.

Just to add I haven't really enjoyed my cycling for sometime, infact I'm not doing as much of late, I'm fed up of constantly looking down at the road and not enjoying some of the views. Really hoping things improve.

Our roads are third world quality. It is a national scandal and the tory government /labour councils can lie about investment blame each other but they are both to blame and are culpable for injuries and deaths caused by their combined incompetence. Do the pillocks think we are blind ?

Cycle to work in London every day, so many side roads which must be used to avoid dangerous traffic which are in a shocking state. The 'dedicated' cycle highways are a convoluted mess.
Read this only the other day.

Strange world we live in when downright dangerous is ignored, but if you draw a cock on something, it gets sorted pretty quickly.

The government allocates almost 40 times more to maintaining national roads, which it controls, compared with local roads, which are overseen by and the responsibility of local councils. When government cuts to local authorities are also factored in, it should come as no real surprise that underfunded local councils are unable to properly maintain the roads under their control.

I hit one when heading out to Settle in the car yesterday. I thought my bloody teeth were going to fall out! There's a clue in the initial post though, farm vehicles sign! They are contributing to the overall mess and you will notice that in country areas where there is heavy tractor traffic the attrition rate is high. If you doubt this, go down Simonstone Lane and look at the turning into the farm half way down. Also, the damage caused by "heavies" near industrial estates is seriously bad. Look at the road where they access the slaughter house near Colne Asda. Then there's the weather, of course. This year's wet winter seems to have cause more damage than previous wintery ones. I am not sure what the overall solution should be but a starter would be to compel companies and businesses to contribute to repairs where their activities are grinding the roads to bits immediately outside their premises.

I know of a few cyclists who've claimed for damages from the council for pothole damage. One just for damage to the bike, one for damage to the bike and loss of earnings (he had a broken collarbone).

There is definitely a pothole reporting webpage for Lancashire County Council.

I think if you report it, and nothing gets done in a set amount of time, and then your car gets damaged you can claim compensation.

Either way, the situation is well out of control and the govt do need to do a lot more to sort it (but they have rather a lot on their plate at the moment due to unicorn based economic solutions being the norm)

They all sing the same song. "We've no money for road repairs" and then they spend millions on stupid fking bus lanes & erecting traffic lights on roundabouts & daft "speed calming measures"
Someone needs to organise, en masse, on social media to stop paying road tax. If enough of us didn't pay there's nothing they could do about it.

It all needs a complete rethink. The old tarmac plus aggregate is not fit for purpose. A new road gets resurfaced and within months it's cracking up and full of potholes. Does that not make someone in government think that something is fundamentally wrong ? A trip out to Germany, France or Spain to see how they do things is needed. It's a national embarrassment.
