Jaguar Land Rover to cut 1,000 jobs due to Brexit

Post by UpTheBeehole » Fri Apr 13, 2018 2:41 pm

Jaguar Land Rover to announce 1,000 job cuts next week
Carmaker blames sales slump due to Brexit and confusion over diesel engines

Jaguar Land Rover is to cut 1,000 jobs in the west Midlands, blaming a slump in car sales due to uncertainty over Brexit and the future of diesel vehicles.

Britain’s biggest carmaker will cut 1,000 temporary contract workers at its plant in Solihull. The factory employs 10,000 workers, including 2,000 contract staff.

The company, which employs 40,000 people, will move some workers from its factory at nearby Castle Bromwich to fill gaps left by the cuts at Solihull.

The cuts are understood to have been triggered by a 26% drop in UK sales in the first three months of 2018. The company will say customers are delaying buying new cars because of concerns about the government’s policy on diesel cars. Consumer confidence had also been hit by uncertainty over Brexit.

In a statement JLR said: “In light of the continuing headwinds impacting the car industry, we are making some adjustments to our production schedules and the level of agency staff. We are however continuing to recruit large numbers of highly skilled engineers, graduates and apprentices as we are over-proportionally invest in new products and technologies.”

Britain has increased the amount of vehicle excise duty paid by almost everyone buying a new diesel car from this month. Diesel accounts for around 90% of JLR’s UK sales.

Not exactly the world's cheapest of cars, doubt it'll be purely down to Brexit for the decline in sales

Ironically the OP's pasted post on this one highlights many of the issues I've mentioned before in your linked thread but the OP dismissed due to ignorance or agenda, probably a mixture of both.

It won't be, the OP's pasted comments highlight the reasoning is also down to Diesel engine issues, but that won't get much of a mention due to agendas on this forum.
It's been raised before, but I was told I don't have a clue about the industry by someone who actually doesn't understand the industry

On the plus side JLR are switching over to hybrid and/or electric motors so their sales will pick up again soon enough.

Those temps will just have to find other jobs in the meantime, such is life for a temp but they'll know that already.

Also worth noting that JLR are still recruiting skilled workers and apprentices.

Contractors get paid a pretty penny anyway.

The firm is owned by Asian bling merchants and is Venkys chicken on wheels and the statement is a cowardly political attack as defence for a style and marketing production complex failing for good reason, rather than a maker of serious vehicles.

I live a few hundred yards from a Jaguar showroom and it is all Asian bling.

The e-pace is an utter joke of a car and not fit to wear the marque, as is the idiotic design of their new electric car. (tarts r them) Tata motors have a similar pillock product in their Indian range but it's all about the status of the badge, no matter what they are selling.

if you have to ask Victoria Beckham how to engineer and design a product then you shouldn't be in the business.

Beckham didn't design anything, it was a marketing ploy and she was involved in very little apart from some interior stuff.

That's enough, Sidney. Just even involving her at all, says it.

The bought Jaguar to sh*t on England just to show that they can.

Nationlize and rationalize immediately. Sack the whole design department and dispel the marketing department altogether.

Meanwhile if anyone has an idea for any inventive anything in this country, one comes up against a total brick wall, as stupid as the Dragons Den. So if I have an engineering idea I give it to Sydney and hope for the best, because that's all I can do.

There’s actually some serious innovation that goes on at Jaguar Land Rover. The fancy bodies and endorsements are just to keep the sales rolling in for what is essentially (and traditionally) a very reserved British brand. Moving with the times is no bad thing.

They just don’t tickle my fancy, but you can’t deny their approach to higher levels of engineering.

There is some amazing stuff going on at numerous car manufacturers, especially in the self drive and electrical side of it all.

Utter rubbish is going on more. Second guessing fools and fooling themselves in the process. For the new Ford Focus (I went through 40 pages of it on MSN,) if you want a raised wheel height, you've got to go around in a hiking boot of a car that says you're a prat.

The malaise is not just at Jaguar LandRover, it comes from appealing to backward people with dosh from Asia etc.

The Honda Civic Type-R as the nadir of idiotic production.

JLR don’t build cars specifically to appease “backward owners” from India. I’d like to be more backward if I could be as successful at Tara Group in my lifetime!

I’d be inclined to agree with on your last point regarding the Civic, when I was 18 I’d have strongly disagreed. My perceptions on economics and efficiency have changed immensely on my path as an engineer.

I am one of the contract workers whose job is under threat at Solihull. We are due to be informed later today who's jobs are being cut. The problem is at Jaguar who have falling order books and lots of spare production that is being cut. As this affects unionised employees they have been offered a transfer to the LandRover site at Solihull which still has more orders than it can provide cars for. Those Castle Bromwich Jaguar staff had until lunchtime today to decide whether to accept the move or take voluntary redundancy.

I think I should be safe as I work in a special refit area for low number batches of cars. But we should know later.

All smoke screens.

My company work in JLR site through the country. They've been "streamlining" (scaling back) for years. I'd imagine Brexit will have little to do with JLR's discussions. Wherever I go in Europe neither Jag's or Land Rovers are as popular as they are in the UK.

Absolutely nothing to do with brexit and to say it is suggests a smokescreen to hide the fact that everyone connected to the motor trade knows. Diesel is the main factor and utter confusion over what’s going to happen. Also the rise in popularity of personal contract purchase has hidden a massive rise in actual prices across nearly every range. People just see the monthly payment and don’t question the actual price of the car. It’s the next miss selling scandal and also the next credit disaster!!

Wasting your time, OP isn't interested in any of what you've written, despite his own post mentioning Diesel issues.

In fact he was exactly the same when BAE announced cuts despite the fact they do it on an regular basis when their orders change.

Was loaned an F pace as a courtesy car, list price around £45k, totally underwhelming driving experience, was glad to get back into my Kangoo van!

I went on a visit to the Halewood plant the day after the vote and spoke to three lads working there who were pleased about the result. I was amazed. I would have thought everyone involved in the car industry would have voted remain.

How about speciality designer children to go in a speciality designer Range Rover S.U.V. Sport with a slanting back roof and black slits for rear passenger windows?

Why's that then?

The car industry is always in a state of flux due to varying things like new products, costs etc.
As a country we produce a very small percentage of the world's cars, I don't think we're even top 5, possibly not top 10.

Why though?

We will still make cars after Brexit, we made cars before we joined Europe.

The UK is the fifth biggest car exporter in the world in fact. Over 75% of the cars produced in the UK are exported each year - currently around 1.6 million a year.

More to do with diesel as 90% of what they produce are diesel powered and I am one of those not changing vehicles until the way forward is clarified. Wh o in their right mind is going to buy a car which you may find banned from certain towns and cities but not at others and Councils may be able to set their own agenda for exhaust emissions in the future.
