Help :( Not enough memory for windows update

Post by Foulthrow » Wed Apr 25, 2018 2:53 pm

Hello all.

Plea for help here. I bought (and yes this was a mistake) what I thought was a good value laptop - however, it only has 30gb of memory. I thought that this wouldn't be a problem because I wasn't going to use it for saving stuff like photos and such. However, even with nothing saved on it all the memory has been eaten up by windows updates and now I can't install any more updates!

I've done the usual Google searches of how to get round this and can't find a solution that will work. Much of the advice involves using external storage - however, I cannot find the option to do this on my laptop.

Any help greatly appreciated. Please!

You can connect an external hard drive via a usb cable to a usb connection (port) on your laptop. There should be a number of available usb ports on your laptop. That is the easiest option to add more disk space.

Hi by the sounds of it its more storage you need not memory.
Replace the hard drive or buy an external drive.

Open Windows Explorer.
Right click on the 'C Drive' and select 'Properties'.
A Properties Window will now open up.In the middle section of the 'Properties Window', select 'Disk Cleanup'.
A 'Disk Cleanup Window' will now open up. It might take several minutes to calculate what it can delete.
When it has finished, you will be presented with a list of file types to delete (e.g. Temporary files, downloaded program files, recycle bin etc.). I usually select them all.

In the bottom left of the 'Disk Cleanup Window' there should be button that says 'Clean up System Files. Click on it.
Disk Cleanup will now run and free up disk space.
If this works, you will need to do it regularly (especially following an update).

If this fails, you will most likely need to connect to a an external hard drive via usb.

Firstly, thanks for all the replies - greatly appreciated.

I can - and have - connected an external hard drive - however, it doesn't give me an option to use this for the update. I don't know why :(

I've done the disk clean-up thingy - that removes about 1mb.

Any other ideas?

No. I think it was only about £130 so I thought it was a good option for browsing net and emails and such like. It is a HP Stream something or other if anyone else wants to avoid buying one.

Did the disk cleanup work?

If not I've no idea what you can do except maybe format it and try a fresh install

Failing that you can buy small SSDs for about 20 quid on amazon for something like a 60gb

^^^Try this ^^^

I have a cheap tablet running Windows 10 and it has a flash memory hard drive of 32gb but everything is installed and up to date fine so it can be done with plenty of room to spare.

Once you have connected the external hard drive, you will probably need to identify and move files (documents, photos, music etc,) from your laptop hard drive to it, so that you have more space available.

How much memory/ storage space is the update asking for?

Without seeing it it is had to suggest I would probably look to move any none essential (OS Type) files to external storage (maybe temp remove any installednprogrames apps) until you have above what is being requested and then try the upgrade again.

You can’t install windows updates onto an external drive, they have to be installed onto the hard drive that the system( windows ) is on,
Which is your main internal hard

Might be simpler to just get a new laptop or tablet.

These types of laptops are not fit for purpose. I know someone who bought what sounds like the same one with the sole intention of using it for web browsing, however came across the same problem.

It looks and functions exactly the same as a normal laptop, except for this disastrous flaw.

Never had any issue with mine, a 64GB Micro SD card where everything other than the O/s is stored is working fine for me.....

If it's a 32GB hard drive it'll probably be some form of flash memory. Fitting something larger will involve soldering at the least.

They are usable but you have to be a bit more careful with them, they don't offer much beyond a basic windows install.

Run something like https://windirstat.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to see where the memory is being taken up and move big files to an SD card/USB drive, try turning off the hibernation file temporarily, run disk cleanup and disk cleanup on system files (these are two separate operations, try following this https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/clea ... save-space" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

Does your HP Stream have a micro SD card slot? If so, get a high speed micro SD card to use for your user data storage which would leave your OS drive for windows and applications only.

The laptops are designed for use with online services such and OneDrive so your user data is stored in the cloud and accessed on demand.

Found this online:

*****

Had the same problem and found the solution:

Make sure you have 8GB of free space
Go and download the media creation tool from Microsoft: http://microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Run MediaCreationTool.exe
Click Upgrade this PC now
Select Keep personal files and apps
Let it install and when its done you will have the anniversary update
Enjoy!

****

I assume it'll just install the Fall Update version as a whole without needing the space to overwrite stuff already there.

Let me know if it works

30GB is plenty for a 64-bit Win10 install. I would normally install Windows on a partition of 40GB (or a small good value SSD) personally as I keep OS and data separate.

Well, I thought I had sorted it, but I hadn’t. I’m back to the same problem and really don’t know how to fix it I’m afraid.

In the end I simply gave up. I know this leaves me vulnerable with a lack of security updates but I just can’t fix it. So now I just ignore it and it still seems to run ok. I’ll wait till it dies and then follow Leisure’s advice - just get a new one!!!

Is there not a helpful Microsoft message board somewhere out there for such help like Apple have?

Do a search perhaps.

You can connect an external HDD to your computer and when you go to do the update it will ask you which storage you want to use. I did that and it updated perfectly fine!

I tried that but didn't work for me. Mind you that was a while ago. Maybe I'll give it another crack.
