Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Confirmed by Dyche earlier today that Arfield is in talks with Rangers and Marney is seeing out his contract. Almost an end of an era as the last few players of that 2013/14 squad remain, I truly hope they both get given a chance to play or get subbed on in the last game against Bournemouth, 2 true professionals that's represented the club fantastically over many years.

Certainly it was the end for Deano, and thank you for the memories
But Scotty? Valuable back up and 100% gets us. Gutted he's going to be honest.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Sad to see em go, both tremendous servants of the club.
I'll always remember Scott's brilliant celebration at Deadwood with Duffer.
Scored some important goals and Marneys put in some fabulous shifts too.
Like you say, would be great for them to appear against Bournemouth
to be given a fitting send off.
Sad to see them go, but onwards and upwards.

I think Arfield coming for nothing and leaving for nothing is a testament to how far this club has progressed.
Good luck Scotty and Deano.

I’ve not got anything on the site yet cos I’m out this afternoon. When I do I’ll try to ensure the articles reflect the service they’ve given our club. Both of them have been fantastic for us. We move on but this is also a sad day. The very best to both of them.

Maybe we offered Arfield a contract but he didn't want to stay and be a squad player? Think Rangers will be a decent move for him, be interesting to see how he fares at that level.

I will never forget Scottys goal against ba...ds, a day that made him a massive clarets favourite, Deano too had his moments, two great stalwarts of our club, Scott will do well at Rangers im sure of that, and wherever Deano goes im sure he will soon become a fans favourite, the best of luck to both of them.

I think Scott Arfield is probably my favourite player of the Dyche era.
Always gave everything for the shirt and if any player is an embodiment of who we are as a club right now he is it for me.

To think how little they cost us and the value we got out of them. Two fantastic players for us. And both Cult Heroes. Which isnt often the case for good players.
If we get some artistic murals up on the crappy wall behind the beehole they would be two of the first to be on there!

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
He’s been sat on a contract offer for almost a year so I think he must have decided it was time to move on. We will be bringing in a wide player in the summer and with Brady fit he probably saw there would be a lack of game time.Lancasterclaret wrote:Certainly it was the end for Deano, and thank you for the memories

Was, sadly, always going to be tough for Marney. We thought as he was stretchered off that it might be the end for him.
Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Both been fantastic, it's a little worrying we're getting rid of players that have made up the team spirit that has seen us be successful but I guess that's the problem with trying to progress further. It could be a massive mistake, almost like the Stoke and Walters/Bardsley situation, not that they will be great assets on the pitch but the core group in the dressing room is an important foundation to success and must be maintained.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Remember seeing Scotty on the left side of midfield at Cork in a pre-season friendly in July 2013. I didn't think he had/would have too much to offer us to be honest. Wrong again. The last time I'd seen him before that was in Rawtenstall town centre one summer night with his former Falkirk team mate,Alex McDonald who I got to know pretty well during his time as a Claret and living in Rossendale. Scotty's brother,Stuart, was with them too and despite the town's modest entertainment provision they were all having a great day.
Scotty also visited my daughter and granddaughter in hospital with the rest of the Burnley team a few Christmases back and was a 'breath of fresh air'. So, you see, good guys can and do win. Best of luck, Scotty Arf. Always a Claret.

very much agree with the sentiment of this re them leaving them leaving but its clear both want to go rather than us getting rid.KRBFC wrote:Both been fantastic, it's a little worrying we're getting rid of players that have made up the team spirit that has seen us be successful but I guess that's the problem with trying to progress further. definitely need to keep a core of players who give us that team spirit but that core needs to evolve as well.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
What a great relationship it's been for both club and player, not sure the timing of their arrival could have been any better for both parties. What we've been through these past 5 years has turned out to be more than we could have imagined. Beating the bstrds, gaining promotion, winning the league, surviving relegation, 7th and potential qualification for Europe, what a ride.
The very best of luck to the both of them and long may Burnley FC remains in their hearts as they will remains in ours.

Its a fair point. But would they have the same influence if they are even less regular? At 29 Arfield has plenty of time to still play first team football. And he strikes me as someone who just loves playing.KRBFC wrote:Both been fantastic, it's a little worrying we're getting rid of players that have made up the team spirit that has seen us be successful but I guess that's the problem with trying to progress further. One of the main reasons Hoddle didnt take Gazza in 98 was because even though he was a great character in the dressing room, if he wasnt playing that would all change.

Two Clarets heroes! Good luck to them both.
Not particularly worried about losing two ‘Dyche stalwarts’ as the players we have brought in have bought into the group/ethos. All good things come to an end, as they say. Of course, we have to be careful not to lose our identity but we have to keep evolving as a club too.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
I can remember supporting Deano when he was taking all the flak on here and the previous forum, very unfairly IMO possibly because he was signed by Laws. Laws best piece of business and for me one of our greatest modern servants. Never been a fan of Arfield and I thought he may have gone at the end of last season, but thanks for the goal at Ewood.

Marney didn't fit with the measured passing system of Howe, and is much more at home playing the hustle bustle game which comes with direct football. He's very good at it.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Scotty has never scored a bad goal for us! I remember his goal against Chelsea in our first game after promotion in 2014, even though we ended up well beaten, and his goal at Deadwood will never be forgotten. A search on 'Arfield goals' brings up a few stunners. Never backed out of anything, always gave his best and played wherever he was asked to even when being out of position didn't allow him to be at his best. How he was never picked for Scotland beats me.
Marney has been real class especially under Dyche and it is a testament to how far we have come that he cannot get back in the team. I'll never forget the way he set up Barnes for the first goal against Wigan in 2014, when we clinched promotion. He has done so much for Burnley hey been so unlucky with injuries.
Both of them became better players here, like so many, and that says so much for the manager and his team. Sean Dyche's words today showed a real touch of class.
They will leave as heroes, and I wish them both every success.

Both excellent players for us and can be proud of what they achieved. Shame Arfield isn’t sticking around as he could be influential next season if we do get into Europe but it’s not surprising he wants to play more football.
Marneys been unlucky with injuries but again never let us down under Dyche.
Suppose it’s all part of evolving, as good as they have been for us we are now in a position to recruit better players.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Dean Marney, a Brian Laws signing who would never be good enough and Scott Arfield, a player who was heavily criticised on the terraces at York City right at the very start of his career, despite coming on and scoring a goal towards the end.
I think it’s fair to say that these two players have made many many Burnley fans eat several portions of humble pie over the last five years or so. There are just so many memories, but what professionals and what superb representatives of our football club and its ethos they have been.
They will be dearly missed, but time moves on and this really does allow us to bring in new players in their absence, who will hopefully, continue to play their own little part in improving our ever evolving football club.
I’ll hold nothing but great memories of these two players and it’s sad that they are both leaving at the same time, but I truly believe that this time is the right time.
Thanks Deano and Scotty!
