Burnley players in World Cup Final Tournaments
Have we had any of our players go to a World Cup in the last 60 years other than the six I've listed below?
Jimmy McIlroy (NI) & Colin McDonald (England) in 1958
Jimmy Adamson & John Connelly (England) in 1962
Tommy Cassidy & Billy Hamilton (NI) in 1982

He was in the initial squad but was left out of the final squad which travelled to Mexico. Seemed a strange decision at the time - Coates had a medical condition (low heart rate or something - can't remember), which would have been beneficial in the high altitude in Mexico.mikeS wrote:Ralph Coates 1970?

One of my biggest disappointments as a Claret, Ralphy not going to Mexico.ClaretCliff wrote:He was in the initial squad but was left out of the final squad which travelled to Mexico. I was a huge fan of his.

I may be wrong but didn't Coates actually go to Mexico in a larger squad, but was then sent back home along with David Sadler and three others, thus allowing Alf Ramsey to have the correct number of players in the final squad?

I remembered this rather sad photo of the six players left out of the 28 man squad for Mexico in 1970 - Ralph alongside Shilton, Kidd, Sadler, McNab and Peter Thompson (who was also left out at a similar stage in 1962 and 1966!)
