Steven Defour - two more years

Post by Belgianclaret » Thu May 24, 2018 6:48 am

Belgian press reporting that Burnley activated the option to extend his contract for two more years.

In addition, Defour (who is said to be delighted with the extension) will also end his international career in order to use the international breaks to recover and recuperate from the exertions of the Premier League.

Great news! Can he not convince Nainggolan to come as well?

Great news, I hope the club confirm it soon.
It would be a shame about his international career, but considering the competition in that squad, and his age, he could probably do with a good break post season.

Lots of players, his age, will step back at the end of a World Cup. Has to help his club career and I pray this is true.

Hope so, been watching Burnley since the the late 90's and he is technically the best player to ever wear the shirt in that time period. Worth the admission fee alone sometimes

The Belgian press recently reported that we were activating the option on his contract. Dyche said that was rubbish. I'm not dismissing this latest news but no guarantees it is correct.

What’s excellent about this is that every post on this subject mirrors the last. We ALL like him. Unusual for this board, but I suppose you can’t argue about his sort of quality.

Best I’ve seen in the shirt.

Will he not have one year left of his contract then the added year makes it we have him for two years?

Thats a very similar to the tweet from a belgian journalist I posted on here last month, with the added bit about the international retirement.

I'm surprised he's not hanging around till Euro 2020 though.

Echoing all the other posts on here this morning. Fabulous news if true. The best I have seen in a Claret shirt since the 70's (and he'd probably have got in the team then as well). Nice to see a thread with no argument, it says a lot about the man.

Yep, with you on that.

They (the great unwashed) won’t realise what we had til he’s gone. If he had that explosive burst of pace, he’d be at arsenal, manure, spuds or Liverpool.

A Belgian international footballer calling time on his international career so that he can be rested, recovered and fit for club football with Burnley.

I love the bloke even more if that’s true!

Has anyone else seen the tweet out by a Belgium journo that Steven Defour has retired from international football to concentrate on playing for his club ...

The turnaround in his Burnley career was one of the best features of a fantastic season. I was absolutely convinced he'd leave last summer but so, so glad to be proven wrong. I don't know whether he and SD sat down and talked it through (it seems pretty certain though) but he played like someone who Ferguson was reportedly "keen on singing" for years.

Let's hope he's able to get a good pre-season training under his belt and start the season as he finished the last one before his injury.

I'll be more than happy if Steven Defour starts the 2018/19 season just as he started the 2017/18 season.

And, of course, he looked good for the first 60+ minutes at the start of the 2016/17 season.
