Soccer Aid/Luton Shelton

Post by BurnleySYS » Sun Jun 10, 2018 6:12 pm

Just seen that Usain Bolt is playing in Soccer Aid on ITV later on and it reminded me of Luton Shelton the Jamaican who we nearly signed under Cotterill was it ? He ended up going to Sheff Utd. He was lightning quick and im sure someone on Clarets Mad said he could of been a 100m sprinter for Jamaica ?

Anyway a quick Wiki search on him and he is the all time leading goalscorer for Jamaica with 35 goals.

I don't think he could get a work permit, I don't know what changed and let him join Sheff United though

From memory, I think he played in Norway for a year or two and was a better player when Sheffield applied; and also we didn't send a legal team down to argue the case, thinking it would be through on the nod.

I don't think there has ever been any punishment for bookings in friendlies.

Nearly - it was against Carlisle in a Central League game played at Accy. He was one of a number of trialists playing under assumed names that night and I got a call from the club that afternoon asking me to report the game with the names on the team sheet. For the life of me now I can't remember them all but there was Luton Shelton, Siyabonge Nomvete (who went on to win 81 caps for South Africa) and Sekou Baradji who disappeared after we'd offered him a contract, he subsequently signed for West Ham and then joined Reading on loan. He's still playing in France and his time with Dijon (2011-2014) was his best period.

There was also a black right back (from the Netherlands I think) who played under the name of Jack Overson, much to Vince's bemusement. Rob Turner officially scored for us that night but I got an email from his dad telling me it was impossible because Rob was at home ill.

As for the bookings, if anyone was booked I don't think it was Shelton. But certainly no players received any punishment and the reason it was exposed was because Carlisle (who had Paul Weller playing for them) sussed it out, took photographs and reported us to the league.

As it turned out we didn't need a work permit but our admin people at the time cocked it up. One poster on this message board offered to help the club (and if his advice had been taken we'd have got him) but the club secretary chose to ignore the offer.

What a shambles. Absolute tinpot stuff. Amazing to see how far we’ve come since then.

I just read an article you wrote on C Mad at the time it said ''For the second time in a matter of weeks Burnley have failed on appeal to win a work permit for a player and now there is no chance of Luton Shelton playing for the Clarets for at least another year, when we would be in a position to make a further application.''

Who was the 2nd player?

The Luton Shelton work permit was an absolute debacle.

Imagine ignoring the free advice of a lawyer and just sending admin staff to the hearing.

No idea who that is, did he turn out any good?

I believe we signed Andy Gray on loan in the same window as missing out on Shelton, probably a good thing we missed out on Shelton because Gray was fantastic for us, I have no idea why he chose to leave and threw his toys out of the pram. I actually think Gray was one of the best strikers we've had in the past 15 or so years or maybe he just looked better because we had to watch Gifton.

Sakiri was okay. He’d had a couple of years at West Brom. Came in on trial and did alright.

His career was bang average. Retired in 2009. He’s 44 now.

So we didn't miss out on much then, I don't recall us ever failing to get a work permit before.

We didn’t get Gray I don’t think till the following January having sold Akinbiyi to Sheff Utd.

I remember how excited we all were on CM about signing Shelton that summer. Crazy to think that is thirteen years ago.

Did we not loan Gray in the summer and then signed permanent in January? I maybe wrong. Yeah it's crazy, how time flies.

Sakiri scores against England direct from a corner for Macedonia.

I seem to recall him scoring one against us from down town in one of the many pumping we’ve got at West Brom down the years.

The manager was absolutely fuming over it - but that's how the club was run at the time.

We was **** poor on and off the field under Ternant and Cotterill its amazing how far we have come. We was on the brink on being a league 1 team getting under 10k at home. It could of been alot different.

Any ideas Tony who the highest earners at the club was around these times ? Little and Blake perhaps surely no more than 10k a week ?

We wouldn't be paying that much to a lot of players when Dyche rocked up.

The only season when there was a real concern was 2003/04 when we eventually avoided the drop on the next to last Saturday
