Branston Pickle
This is probably for Asheville Claret . We have a Harris Teeter in Winston Salem. Has a British food aisle. Branston Pickle (Relish), HP Sauce (both), Dark Chocolate Digestives (milk chocolate of course), fkn Baked Beans, Tomato fkn Soup.....so many others. Hell, puddings in a can I never ever ate back home.....Anyone back home even eat Branston Pickle any more???? I put it on EVERY sandwich I ever eat. Guess this thread is actually......where are you and do you ever get ANY of the things you grew up with and loved (no dirty answers.....)

Iceland is a godsend over here in Prague, although they have stopped doing frozen Greggs stuff. Also m&s for sausage although i have to be like a crouching tiger for when they reduce them as they are up to 5 quid a pack for the good ones full whack.

I pass the old Branston pickle factory every day to and from work down here just outside Burton - in Branston, strangely enough.
Part of the huge site is now a B and Q depot but up until relatively recent times there was an absolutely huge government storage facility there with stuff ranging from prison uniforms to arctic-style military vehicles.
Some of the houses adjacent to it were built by Italian POWs who were allowed a little free rein to use their designs - just a few little touches - but very nice they are too.

I do like it, although I go for the newer type which has less chunky pickles, if making a sandwich.
I do like chutney, and when I have a cheese night, I get a couple of flavoured chutneys to compliment them.

Edwards also do mean pies, their various pork ones are amazing.

Transiting through Miami in 1986 from Central America and we had a 14 hour stopover so went to look at the cultural aspect of the city. A dozen beers later and I had a shopping list from a Mancunian exile who worked in a bar.
A fortnight later I dropped off several items for him including a few jars of Haywards pickled onions!

I can assure you that Branston Pickle is very much alive and kicking, like the previous poster, I prefer the smaller chunk variety. When I stayed in North Carolina with a friend who lives there a couple of years back, I was amazed that you couldn't buy baked beans and that she'd never heard of them. I actually thought we'd originally taken the idea from the Americans, but it appears not.

i'm actually from ohio and have only spent 2 weeks in england/scotland/ireland,where my main culinary memory was a pub in scotland that served us thawed peas. our local grocery store has a "european" section and i was going to post some pics to see if there was anything i should try.triadclaret wrote:This is probably for Asheville Claret . we were in stirling scotland at a pub. wife ordered roast beef mashed potatoes and peas. they came out thawed. we were not sure if that was the custom or not. we didnt want to raise a stink/cause an international incident since the US-SCOTLAND relations were strained due to negative portrayal by mike myers fat ******* in the austim powers movies.Rowls wrote:"thawed peas"![]()

Probably because my part of Southern Ontario was originally settled by people from the north-east, everything (except pickled sea kelp) is available here. My local supermarket has a whole section set aside for the Brits, Italians, Caribbean, and Arabs (halal). If you ever come here, you won't starve.

I could never envisage anyone starving on the North American continent

Ordered a Corned Beef sandwich in Edmonton. Out came a plate piled high with bread, corned beef and chips and smothered in gravy. Best sandwich I have ever had!

Corned beef with gravy? Yuch! In the States, gravy can mean a lot of things. They call spaghetti sauce "gravy" down there. The classic corned beef sandwich has mustard with a dill pickle on the side. It's a traditional Jewish meal here.

hp isn't british any more it is dutch or something.
stokes is a better brown sauce anyway and made in england.
as for corned beef - never brown sauce. cream of horseradish and some raw onions.

Sort of related to all this, I keep walking past a bakery in Padiham and they are advertising "Loose Pie" in the window. What in heck's name is "Loose Pie"? A pie without the crust or summat -- maybe the left over filling from when they make real pies?
