"Yes, you've got that correct, you and your 600 mates are going to leg it all the way down that valley and nick those Russian cannons at the other end. I'm going to sit up there high on that ridge and let you get all the glory....no no you don't need to thank me".

If you are interested the exact quote was "They couldn't hit an Elephant at this dist..." as as mini ball hit him square between the left eye and cheek. It was Union General Sedgwick at Spotsylvania Court house. Though General McMahon who was with him insisted until the day he died that it was said a few minutes before he was shot, to a soldier attempting to dodge sniper fire.houseboy wrote:'Don't worry men, they couldn't hit a barn door at this dist.....'

Mel Blanc, who voiced the characters of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Barnie Rubble, Sylvester the cat and hundred of other cartoon characters, has the Loony Tunes catch phrase 'That's all folks' on his head stone. Nice sentiment I thought.

Thanks for letting me know that. It's years since I read that and it's still one of my favourite 'famous last words' ever.elwaclaret wrote:If you are interested the exact quote was "They couldn't hit an Elephant at this dist..." as as mini ball hit him square between the left eye and cheek. There is a book called "Famous Last Words" by an author called of all thing De'ath (I believe it is pure coincidence) thst is worth a read. The one you picked is in there - but the extra comes from the fact I'm also an ACW geek lol

Re: famous last words
Well done mate, I would never have remembered the guys name in a million years. The author of the book has the same surname as a builder I know. The meaning is obscure but the best guess apparently is either the old English for death or a collector of kindling wood. Oddly, although it looks it, there seems to be no obvious French connection.elwaclaret wrote:It is one of the best.

I’d always taken it to be “from Ath” and French, although correctly it would be D’Ath. Anyway just used maps and no such place exists. Cheers for putting me right.houseboy wrote:Well done mate, I would never have remembered the guys name in a million years. The author of the book has the same surname as a builder I know. We used to have a lad from Bacup kept nets for us called De’ath.

Actually the builder I referred to is from a Bacup family so is almost certainly related, I know his son played football as well, as did a couple of them.piston broke wrote:I’d always taken it to be “from Ath” and French, although correctly it would be D’Ath.
