Some absolute rubbish on this thread. The same people screaming that Pope should be playing would be saying the same thing about Butland/Pickford if they played for Burnley, it's absolutely pathetic.

Then penalty we are discussing is specific. The attempt by Pickford was poor. Pope would have gobbled up that one.

Not sure Pickford's distribution and foot skills are that good actually. A lot of talk about his "skills". Ederson he is NOT. Not even close. Think Butland and Pope are better shot-stoppers. Think Pope is the best in the air claiming balls. Just my opinion.....

I don’t think anybody has called him for shot stopping or his kicking. All the doubters are about his dominance of his area and the defence in front of him.
Tonights not the night for that though, he was magnificent.

Another meh performance.
The penalty he saved was a poor one, not hard enough and nowhere near the corner. If the one he saved from 40yds had gone in, he would have been slated for getting beat from 40yds.
I don't think he did anything to convince one way or the other, that he's good or that he's crap. I just think Nick is a lot better.

Accident waiting to happen, does not command his box as per goal, not big enough to come for the ball & all teams know it, mind you it does not help with the 2 centres in front of him, again accidents waiting to happen.

He did everything required from him as a keeper though only had to make 1 save in the game .Good pen save.
This nonsensical “ Pope is better at diving/commanding his box/ better hands /bigger c0ck etc etc “ is just hysterical claret tinted ******** . Pickford is there on Merit and time will tell if he makes the jersey his own . Pope is the new kid in the prem never mind Internationals and as never ever gonna play .Some really do need to get a grip ,slavering at any perceived error they think Pickford will make

nearly cost us again last night in a couple of minutes that encapsulated him perfectly. makes a camera save for a 40-yarder that's going wide, conceding a corner. we all know first hand how bad he is on corners and so it proves again as he's rooted to his line and flapping at thin air.

thankfully, he made a decent penalty save but one that any keeper worth their salt would make.

It’s far from clear, even from the tv replays, that it what going wide. It would take a very brave man to be leaving that, especially in injury time. There was a man on the post who didn’t do his job for the goal.

I find Pickford a bit of an odd character ..... Just the way he come across in interviews and his constant pigeon chesting is just weird.

Fair play to him, he did well but he does make me nervous and it would not surprise me if we see a massive cock up or 2 from him which results in us being knocked out!

That's daft, and just plain untrue.
Pickford just doesnt look confident, and doesn't instill confidence in his team mates or the watching fans. He doesn't command his area, and he is too short.
The argument of wether Nick should replace him or not is debatable, the fact Pickford isn't great isn't.

trippier also made an error for the goal but look at pickford's movement. he has no command over his area whatsoever and as the corner is taken, he's dancing around in no man's land because he doesn't know where he should be, then he moves back to his line because he knows he can't come out and claim but because of his starting position, he can't get anywhere near the header.

in short, a bigger keeper would either a) come and get the cross or b) be able to reach the header.

said it many times before, he makes flashy saves but isn't very good at the standard stuff. think of the number of times pope came way off his line under pressure last season to claim the ball. that's exactly what we needed last night.

Cannot believe anyone is trying to pin the blame for the goal on Pickford.
No goalkeeper in world football would have come for that corner, it's a fast paced outswinger where the point of contact is 7-8 yards out.

The header is powerful and downwards so the angle it's going to come back off the turf at is unknown - skid and stay low, bounce high up. Either way, it's directly at Kieran Trippier and he's the one who should be dealing with that, not the keeper.

It hasn't taken long for the usual whining and negativity to set in about last nights stalwarts. I think it's the default mindset for some of us.

The Columbian's have history for murdering people who muck up in the World Cup (Escobar). On that basis I feel for them and sincerely hope that kind of nonsense is way behind them, because they went out because of cartoon capers - conceded a penalty due to one guy deciding to play piggy backs and because of an incredibly limp-wristed goalkeeper failing to save a penalty that he had reached.

Yet our goalkeeper pulls off a miraculous penalty save and some folk suggest it was routine. He was phenomenal, and dreadfully unlucky his late save didn't get the reward it deserved (how the heck people know it wouldn't have swerved back inside the post, and how they think Pickford could have weighed that up in a split second, I will never know).

I saw maximum effort and desire last night, with some skill in the face of extreme provocation. They deserve their glory, prior to kicking on for more.

How on earth would he reach the header? Trippier headed it, if he’d have dived for it he’d have given Trippier even less chance of clearing.

I think he had a good game. The main save for me was the one low down to his right, the others; I'd have been very disappointed if he hadn't have saved.
