As a general point why are we so willing to dismiss, denigrate and besmirch the reputations of people we've never met? We form opinions based on what we see or hear via the media and then feel we can just write someone off with a horrible little comment like that above.
Another thing: we are all, as individuals a result of our genes and environment, things about which we have no control. Maybe you were abused as a child and then go on to abuse others in adulthood, for example. Everything that happens to us influences how we are.
So maybe I can suggest a little more compassion on the message board?
You make a fair point, and i agree to an extent.
He is a public figure though, and as it happens I am big fan, have been since late 70's.
He is my all time favourite footballer by a mile.
Although he was rightly seen as a giant of modern football, he has ruined his reputation time and time again off the pitch.
Because of who he is, and what he achieved, thousands of kids looked up to him, he had a unique position and chose to shoot journalists with air pellets, snort coke, get fat, break professional agreements and disregard contracts with impunity.
He berates match officials, has a record of narcotic abuse, THE worst imaginable role model, and yet FIFA saw fit to make him of all people an ambassador of the game. Absolute disgrace, therefore my only possible knowledge of him is based on this shambolic mess of a man.

Flawed genius who chose to self destruct - just like so many others such as Gazza and George Best. Similar characters are Suarez and Diego Costa - can be outstanding yet also have that nasty streak too.

Give it 20 years. He’ll be remembered as a junkie if he’s remembered at all.
