Re: David Davis resigns
Bearing in mind Boris’s known position, shouldn’t he resign today as well?
I know of his widely reported views at Chequers last week.. he had his say.. apparently though he ‘signed up’ to the sellout deal last week... didn’t he?
He has been very quiet since Chequers... no statements, no tweets.
The experts this morning think Boris will hang around... if he does, he is a hypocrite yes..?
- if he goes, enjoy the ensuing carnage.
** uppermost in Boris’s mind, will not be what’s best for the country, or the government, but what is best for Boris.
What an odious individual he is.

On College Green, Westminster (Sky News) there are a series of political interviews/ chats taking place with a range of politicians and commentators.
Behind them stands a swivel-eyed moron dressed in the European yellow/blue, with two large placards in his fists..’Brexit..is it worth it?’
He is having a running commentary with himself while all the time changing his position to get his banners up there..
The loon is strengthening the Brexit position/ support by thousands for every second that he stands there, making a fool of himself.

Labour MPs have been summoned to a meetimg with the TORIES chief whip. To ensure the Chequers agreed bargaining stance is supported.
Labour MPs crossing the floor to take instructions from the bloody Tories chief whip, in a private meeting. What **** is that all about!!!?
If ever proof of an political establishment stitch up, to thwart the Will of the People was needed.
I voted for a clean brexit. 17.4 million did the same. Many many people who I speak to in and around Burnley , the vast majority Labour voters, will now never vote again.
Theres already a deap mistrust of the political establishment. This will be permanently fractured by disillusionment.
A reduced electorate will see only a few votes required to elect extremists.

No Labour MP’s have crossed the floor anywhere.

I'm not blaming Labour. I'm saying the whole rotton lot of them are conniving to stop brexit.
The whole farce of the last 2 years has been nothing, absolutely nothing, more than a choreographed deception. A deception to give the impression to the gullible public that there are pro Leave members of the cabinet fighting a principled and noble fight on behalf of the 17,400,000 who voted for a clean brexit and a sovereign and independent United kingdom. They have been shown to be what they are. Duplicitous co-conspirators in this Machiavellian plot to usurp the Will of The people and thwart democracy. Gove, Johnson and the whole rotton lot of them are no more for leaving the EU than Clegg or Starmer. Remember he, Boris, wrote TWO versions of his declaration as to which side of the EU debate he would support. There is only one party and one true patriot, that the establishment has tried demonize, for decades, that stands for and believes in a true clean brexit. That's UKIP and Nigel Farage. On this i agree the country is polarised,of course if Cameron had put a threshold on the original ballot,60% seems solid enough either way, these problems wouldn't have occurred, now a General Election or a 2nd referendum could well produce another hang parliament/split result which will solve nothing.Lancasterclaret wrote:I'd hate it.
Unless its a thumping win (60% +) then these problems continue.
I voted to leave but concede the ballot was close enough to make a hard brexit hard to sell plus the ensuing election just confused matters further.
We are stuck between a rock and a hard place but Theresa's fudge isn't a viable solution either.

As this is the first vote we've ever had on EU membership, a 60% threshhold on membership would surely have to be 60% in favour of joining. 41% would be enough for us to leave in that case.tiger76 wrote:On this i agree the country is polarised,of course if Cameron had put a threshold on the original ballot,60% seems solid enough either way, these problems wouldn't have occurred, now a General Election or a 2nd referendum could well produce another hang parliament/split result which will solve nothing.

The first Scottish devolution referendum had something of that nature. It was majority vote AND at least 40% of eligible voters voting in favour. They got the majority vote (51.6%, very similar to Brexit) but only 32.9% of the electorate. (Brexit got 37.4%.)

The 60% threshold would have made this easier but would have been a difficult sell from Day 1 as we entered the EEC on a referendum with no supermajority. Hard to say you can enter on 50%+1 but not leave on the same basis.
Re: David Davis resigns
All this does confirm is that no one really knew what they were voting for, not the politicians, not the punters. Left and right is an irrelevance in this one (more's the pity).
Perhaps we should have a second referendum, limited to questions of how soft a Brexit we're going to have (given we're having one):-
Option 1 - the full King Canute - hard as nails, sat on his own at Blackpool commanding the incoming tide;
Option 2 - the Futon - hard enough to dissuade anyone from Europe sharing it with us but at least looking as if we're open to it
Option 3 - Fully sprung and soft as a feather
The whole thing is also a brilliant lesson in what sovereignty is and isn't, but I'll stop there. At least we're in the semi-finals

Do you think that leaving an organisation knowing that you are going to have adopt all their rules and regulations, whether it be free movement of people and goods, shared military and police intelligence, consumer laws and human rights laws, thereby losing all your rights to have an input and vote into those decisions that will still very much affect us all?ClaretMoffitt wrote:Just tell me,

Compromise is a dirty word though. The Ringo wing of the right are fundamentally opposed to compromise. It's how the Tea Party got so much power in the States. Anyone who tried to work with the left was 'primaried' and replaced with a fundamentalist in their gerrymandered districts. That'll happen here if the Ringo-wingnuts get their way.

Inevitable really. I posted on this board a week ago that nobody within government really knows what Brexit is and that the Chequers summit would produce a chocolate fudge cake indigestible for many. Since we are almost 2 years down the line since the referendum and have now lost the Brexit secretary it just shows what a shambles it really is.

Not just different things, but different intents. His rhetoric is intended to shift the Overton window. He's not intending to make sense, he's just intent on ensuring that people start thinking that his idiocy is mainstream, and that mainstream lefty ideas are actually extreme lefty ideas. It's kinda working. It's why terms like "alt-left" have cropped up. It's not really a response to the term "alt-right", it's actually the acknowledgement that the alt-right is occupying more and more of the right, and reclaiming "alt-" as extreme and pinning it on the mainstream left.

People on here aren't exactly normal people though with regards to political labels.Bordeauxclaret wrote:I think what’s Ringo classes as extremists and what normal people class as extremists are very very very different things.
I mean according to many on here, I'm an extremist.
Not to mention a;
White supremacist
alt right
far right
Nazi
Bigot
xenophobe
So when someone gets labelled something on here I tend to take it with a rather large pinch of salt.

I think when you criticise black people for doing what you defend a white person doing it is ok to call you some of those names. Then when you add some of your other beliefs they can all be accepted as adequate descriptors.

DD comes across as a wacky grandad, which isn't always a good thing. But at least he's stuck by his principles and resigned. He gets a brownie point off me for that.

Re: David Davis resigns
I think he gets a brownie point from me as well for actually resigning, but loses it again straight away as he actually didn't do anything.
He had probably the most important job in the cabinet over the last two years, and did the square root of f**k all with it.
