Yes, there are empty seats because this is only the second season that they have ever played in the third tier of English football, the last time being 1987/88. Having said that there are still 31,075 in attendance which isn't too bad for League One

That attendance is 3,440 more than their average attendance last season.

Don't know about Cattermole, but just shown Kevin Ball in the stand. Isn't he some kind of PR bloke for em?

Cattermole is still at Sunderland.
We moan on about our squad etc., however, Charlton have only 5 fit players to fill their bench today because of injuries picked up in pre-season.

His agent told the club during the close season that he wants away because the fans don't want him at the club.
It looks like 31, 000 will be going home happy now with a good goal which is probably the winner.

Deluded as ever

Sunderland match-winner Lynden Gooch told Sky Sports: "The club's gone through a rough time in the last few years.

"I've been here a long time, and this means a lot to everyone.

"The manager has come in, been confident with everyone and has changed the mood, and you can see that today.

"This is a Premier League club."

OK! mate a Premier League club, that's why you're playing in League 1 then.

Come on its just a turn of phrase and a player being positive about their club. Of course literally they are not a Prem League club and there are only 20 Premier League clubs but based on fanbase, stadia, facilities, infrastructure and recent history its not really that deluded to positively regard your club as Premier League standard in respect to those things

Yes on paper they should be a mid-table Premier outfit, but that standing his to be earned,i'm sure under the right guidance on and off the pitch they will return to the Premier League within the next 4/5 seasons, but a large fanbase and stadium, doesn't itself determine success if mismanagement occurs as it did in their case.

Agree with this but thought it was a bit extreme calling the player deluded for throwing out a few positive cliche's in an interview just after scoring the winning goal

It wasn't just him he's a young lad,but many of their fans seem to feel they have a divine right to Premier League football,it wasn't that long ago they were yo-yoing between the top two divisions, and in the late 1980's they even had a year at third tier level.

Again agree that lots of fans are deluded (its more that they are just obsessed than deluded) and you can see that clearly on this forum with our fans and it is true of fans of all clubs.

Your comment was however specifically aimed at the player but to be fair its not really that important and im only carrying on with it cos im not up to much this aft so i'll stop now
