Foreign Investment

Post by MRG » Sun Aug 05, 2018 8:20 am

It is being reported that the 4th richest man in Asia was at the Wigan game yesterday and he is close to a takeover of Wigan.

Are Wigan any more attractive than we are? Do we get similar approaches and knock them back? Have Wigan actively sought them out and if so, could that be an option for us?

Heard it on good authority that we have been approached numerous times to sell but the board don’t want to.

If no investment is brought in then, sadly, I don't think we'll stay in the Premier League for very long. We're already find it hard to compete in the transfer market.

It really is great having local Burnley fans in charge of the club but there has to be some way of getting investors involved somehow and still keeping control over it. It has worked out ok for the likes of Bournemouth...

Why would the board want to sell unless they got a massive offer ?

Literally summed up my feelings exactly. What worries me is that it’s now creeping into the championship also

And what if foreign investors want a better manager?

I'd rather stick with SD than entertain the idea of getting a foreign coach for example.

Some of the objections to investment that I read on this board are bonkers! What if they don’t want to change the most successful manager in recent times?

Most foreign owners come in to make a profit out of clubs. Very few do.
We have plenty of funds to work with at the minute even if we don't like splashing it about.

It's fine the way it is for me.

Do you realise how many clubs in the top 2 leagues are owned by foreign investors? Once you have a count up you will realise that your worries can be quashed

Not really.

How many foreign owned clubs stick with the same manager through thick and thin?

Bournemouth is the only one in the PL at present where the manager has been there longer than Dyche that I can think of and that's because Howe was a bit of a club legend before he took the job and he's done well.

It's a given that a foreign owner would've booted Dyche out after his first relegation.

I support the Football Club not the Manager. Evidence shows that bringing in Foreign investment does not mean the start of the end of the club regardless of what decisions are made. A bigger concern that I have is that unless we develop as a look and seek the big investment we will never be able to compete in the top 2 leagues because other clubs are making the progression that we are fighting to avoid

Why would a foreign investor buy Burnley? The only reason would be to see a significant return on their investment, eg getting a slice of the TV money. They aren't donating money, they are putting money in so that they can take more money out.

Why do you think an investor would put money into Burnley?

Even when every club is owned by a foreign billionaire, the richest man in China/Dubai etc... three clubs still get relegated. Then they buy up all the Championship clubs.. and still only three go up. And the TV revenue they're all after has already peaked, the new deal was slightly down, the next will be smaller again.

Not sure how this ends up and what it all means for Burnley.

Whatever the reason, the model seems to be working fine for the majority of the top 2 divisions, the clubs that we are unable to compete with in the transfer market

Not really. We already earn loads of money, enough to compete, for now at least.

If an owner came in, foreign or otherwise and just said 'have money off me, I don't want a say in how its invested and I don't want to interfere at all in the day to day running of the club' then that'd be fine. But it never happens that way in reality.

If we became the next Fulham or wolves or even City then it wouldn't be my club anymore.

There is ample evidence that it is the start of the end too.

It's 50/50 how it turns out.

We are developing as a club, blind man on horse etc can see it unless you really really don't want to see it.

We are competing, our way is working and we are in the Europa league and our 3rd consecutive season in the PL..

What progression are we fighting to avoid?

Investment doesn’t lead to success, neither does spending. The likes of Fulham, Huddersfield, Brighton, Wolves may have spent this summer. But they’ve acheived nothing yet. Everton can field a midfield with Gylfi, Richarlison and Bolasie. Totalling £130m. I wouldn’t say that’s £100m worth better than Brady, Jbg and Defour.

Foreign investment is needed. Dyche knows this which is why he’s said what he has in the press. Garlick, Kilby ect will be happy to see us as a middling championship/league 1 club if it meant their pockets were happy. Been that way for a long while

Back to the original question, Dave Whelans been trying to sell Wigan for quite a while now I think. He stepped down and gave the chairman role to his grandson about 2 years ago whilst actively saying he was looking to sell.

Probable attractiveness is irelevant I’d have thought. Why would a multi millionaire have pumped money into Bournemouth, Wolves et al. Once you’ve bought the club that doesn’t have a big fan base and revenue stream its effectively a play thing or a status symbol for people with that sort of money.

Our board take a lot of flack for one thing or the other but I wouldn’t swap them for some flash harry from Abu Dhabi or somewhere even more exotic. They have the clubs best interests at heart and they’re securing the future of our club in the long run. Rather that than a Blackburn, Portsmouth, Leeds scenario.

Good point and a good thread all round.

The ideal would be foreign investment not total ownership.- maybe. There are good and not so good foreign owners. If they came as partners not owners what is in it for them? Tax dodge? Maybe? Ego trip Maybe? Love Burnley? Doubt it but admire the club.

No evidence apart from our lack of spending. £50 million on Gray and Keane brought in last year. £120 million tv deal. Yet we’re being told we don’t have the money to spend to compete on the transfer market compared with other foreign owned club. Just doesn’t add up to me. Also I don’t understand why people don’t want Burnley to have the ability to sign better players and have more of a chance to stay in the premier league.?

Not broken yet and that's down to astute management and buying. Our selling of players has not been that good. But things are moving very quickly and investment is pouring in at other clubs as witnessed by these now astronomical transfer fees. To maintain the status quo, that is if you want to watch Premier League football at Turf Moor into the future, outside investment will be needed. As good as they are Sean Dyche and Co surely can't keep pulling rabbitts out of hats with their recruitment

Well you've kind of answered your own question.evryeone in the league gets that £120m you refer to. Everyone. BUT some get extra money from, you guessed it, their rich foreign owners!

Just because we can't compete with Fulham and Wolves financially doesn't mean we can't compete on the pitch. Where were you last season?

Watching us have our best ever season in the Premier League whilst every other club in the league bar City and Huddersfield massively underachieved
