Idris Elba - fabulous. Not a ladies’ man? You must be joking! Speaking as a ‘lady’, I can say that I think he’d make a good ladies’ man - and many of my female friends agree!

Whether he gets the Bond gig or not, I don’t rate Idris Elba as a great actor.

However, that didn’t stop Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan getting the job, and Bond films have always been a bit cheesy.

I also think he's a little overrated. He was excellent in The Wire but otherwise I think his performances have been hit and miss. Likeable guy nonetheless.

Let's face it, there doesn't lie your point.

And I said Idris Elba is likeable, not James Bond. I don't think the actor who plays the next James Bond needs to be a womanising drinker in his private time.

No. And neither did the fact that Brosnan was Irish bother me. That’s because he played the part of Bond as a British secret service agent. That’s what he is.

Bond is a British male character in a series of books and films. I’ve only read a couple of Bond books, but only after I saw films, so my minds eye sees bond as I believe it was written.

Seems to me there’s plenty out there who see this fictional character as being part of an establishment that needs to be changed. I don’t is all.

I think Idris Elba would be a really good James Bond, and in this instance it would be nothing to do with his colour. It would be somebody getting the role because they were good enough and not because of a group of people pretending to be offended.

Now, I may have a different opinion when a female becomes the James Bond after.

I think you’ve missed the point.

There’s plenty out there who wouldn’t see casting a black actor as “changing” Bond any more than casting a Welsh / blond / short actor was. Therefore if Elba is the best man for the job (and I have my doubts, personally), he should get it.

Then there’s folk who think Bond’s whiteness (and presumably Elba’s blackness) is a key defining characteristic which would ruin their suspension of disbelief if a black actor got the role.
