Can you name this film for me?

Post by Billy Balfour » Sun Sep 09, 2018 12:28 pm

The film is set in Austria just after WW2. The plot revolves around a British army officer and a murder - I think a British solider is murdered. The person who killed the solider is a Wehrmacht or Waffen-SS mountain trooper who is mentally ill and still thinks the war is going on.

I remember my dad renting it years ago, on VHS, when I was a kid. Can anyone name the film for me?

I've watched lots of WW2 films the plot doesn't ring any bells, was it a colour film or a black & white if you can remember? I wouldn't mind watching it myself I keep looking out for war films I haven't seen.

Was it about the battle for castle Itter?

It was in colour and made in the 1980s or early 1990s. I've tried Google etc, but can't find it. It's basically about a British Army officer in a small post-war Austrian (Tyrol) town/village. A British solider is killed. There's a Nazi doctor who tries to use surgery to hide the identity of the young Wehrmacht/Waffen-SS mountain trooper who killed the British solider. The mentally ill solider has made his way back to his Tyrolean town/village from the East.

It's years since I watched the film - so I'm really racking my brains here and I may have got some of this wrong, but there was a murder and the ill soldier is hiding from the British Occupation Force.

Thanks. I'll keep looking. I'm usually pretty good when it comes to finding stuff on Google.

Yeah thanks, I went through it last night. I'm beginning to think I dreamt this. I really do remember the film, though.

I've got it! Many thanks for posting the link. I went through it last night, but obviously I wasn't diligent enough. When I saw your link I decided to have another go and found it. Blimey, I'm not going mad after all.

The film is called The Second Victory (1987)

Haha.

Not so happy. I can't find anywhere to view it. There's no streaming service and it's not on DVD. Anyway, at least I now know its name.

Ah, cheers. Serves me right for going off what I read on a website instead of looking myself.
I think I'll pass. It's not worth nearly £20.00, but I'll keep an eye out for it on Prime/Netflix.

This thread raises a question which vexes me nowadays in these times of streaming films rather than buying them on dvd or some other "hard" format. How do you find a film you want to watch ? For example if I fancied watching The Godfather or Apocalypse Now or 28 Days Later or any one of hundreds of good films from the past how can I do this ? I am a Netflix subscriber but the selection of films on there is truly awful ..usually half a dozen decent ones and a pile of terrible B Movies.
I can no longer nip down to Blockbusters and rent and there is barely anyone left selling a large selection of DVDs so what does someone who wants to watch a "classic" film do nowadays ?
Any and all help appreciated.

if you join Amazon Prime, it looks like you get access to loads of movies to stream. I only googled "apocalypse now" and that is included in the deal.

Most of the oldies are available to buy for peanuts on Amazon.

Some of the sky channels Tnt & movies4men ect have the westerns on & the classics if you periodically check on the TV guides or regarding DVDs Amazon or eBay personally I like browsing charity shops or carboots for the more obscure stuff.

Not so. If you wanted a copy of Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell in His Kind of Woman, for instance, it will set you back £25.98.
