The coldest I have ever felt was when I was in Ontario. Was wearing about 9 layers and that wind still froze me to the bone. Different kind of cold in Alberta. The morning after I arrived in Calgary, the thermometer outside said -40. Felt much warmer when I took the garbage out. In short. I prefer Alberta winters to Ontario.

65f here in Las Cruces feels like 85f anywhere else, because at 5000ft we're closer to the sun? Does this make geographical sense?

High altitude air molecules wander in solitude, a pack on their back and a cranky yak carrying their tent behind them. They have more space to wander around in, and because they don't bounce off each other as much, because they're not crammed into a small space by the pressure of the air above them, each square inch has a much lower temperature than sea level air.


Air molecules at low altitudes are crowded together in cities. Rough, unpredictable, they're likely to bounce off each other, and run riot through the streets, and go to nightclubs with guns stuck in the waistbands of their jean shorts. They're at a high energy and that makes for a high temperature.

FWIW. I turned the heating on yesterday morning. Can't trust that forecast on the Beeb. Woke up yesterday to let the dogs out and was freezing my knackers off. Woke up this morning expecting it to be dry and it's persisting it down. I wonder whether these people at BBC's weather centre just stick a pin in a list of phrases and hope for the best!

I hitch hiked across Canada in a winter Vancouver to TO as the locals like to call it . Got down to around -30 well wrapped up and never had to wait too long , my only problem was the heat in car and trucks and doing my best to get a few layers off me before I burnt alive .

Winter wheels went on my 4x4 last week, a bit earlier than usual, but one of my summer tyres had a screw in it. By the end of next week I'll have a quarter of a ton of rocksalt stored ready, I've serviced my boiler and gas fire, and stocked up on real ales and Bene.

I used to be fairly resistant to cold, no undershirts, walking out without overcoat etc but, once past 60 yo, things changed.
I dare say something to do with poorer circulation/slower metabolism etc, but I definitely need to cater for winter nowadays.
Had to procure: thermal vests, thick pullovers, good heavy overcoat, caps/hats, thick socks etc.
Ive also just bought myself a pair of proper winter walking boots & already tried out the CH.

19c at the highest here but quite steep dips at both morning and evening. Winter is certainly on its way slowly. summer shirts etc went in the case yesterday and a fine selection of heavy overshirts and knitwear of various density now adorns the ZizkovClaret Sartorium
