Brilliant

Bet there were some faces in the room, the buyer probably has an item that has increased in value.

Absolute top class. A stroke of genius from an artist that will go down in history as time goes on..

He already is in many art circles - but remains an upstart in the eyes of many of the old school art establishments - with no recognised museum shows to date, other than ones he has organised himself.

He set the scene on this perfectly, has his most iconic image hanging in the auction room for over a week for viewing, highest profile auction at the week long start of Freize Art London, last lot of the auction, gets the piece bid up to a million pounds, had a dedication noted on the back of the piece that ads further to the 'joke' and pulls off the shredding to perfection..

Add this to the below list of thought provoking and subversive 'art' acts.. gotta love the guy!

Just a handful of the things he has done over the years

Brilliant by a street artist seeing his work entering the mainstream, against his will.

Ha!

He's the shy and retiring "street artist" who hired himself an agent and publicist.

Lads, you're laying on the applause a bit thick. The hive mind amongst the old guard on here can be a bit much at times :-l
Take a step back and realise his work is contrived and trite.

so many questions here
- was it the original or a copy?
- if a copy is that fraud?
- was the auction house in on it?
- was the buyer in on it?
- if genuine, I assume that as title hadn't transferred then the buyer doesn't lose out, but does Banksy pay the commission to the auction House?
- does anyone actually know how the set-up worked?

I believe it's well known in the art world though I have never cared to find out.

No doubt if you google it, there are plenty of fake stories deliberately put about to obfuscate the information.

But I'm very confident it's a well known secret in the world of art.

The piece will be worth a great deal more now because of what happened.. shredded or not.

I’ve tried to reply as I see it in reply to your questions in the quote

NRC wrote:so many questions here
- was it the original or a copy? - original piece ( he can do as many as he wants so all original - and that’s part of the joke )
- if a copy is that fraud? N/A
- was the auction house in on it? Doubtful but not impossible.. I’d like to hope not or it defeats the object somewhat
- was the buyer in on it? I’m pretty sure the artist had it bid upnto the headline making Million it sold for
- if genuine, I assume that as title hadn't transferred then the buyer doesn't lose out, but does Banksy pay the commission to the auction House? See first point
- does anyone actually know how the set-up worked?all will probably be revealed over the coming days

'The End' Mario Rossi

I'm surprised Banksy is actually still alive and the publicity officer for Sotherby's who organised it, to create 'Instant art world history.'

It's some silly corporate 'In Yer Face' we're the shits and we rule OK' world posturing, by parochial village idiot London, making prats of themselves along the way, under the auspices of 'Because we can,' like the silly theatre of the House of Commons, whilst the rest of the world tools up to stuff British industry.

I wonder what's going down at the Hull riverside now that the City of Culture bash has moved on. The people of Hull rimmed their own river sludge to suck up to London for an art show homage to vagrants and for folk to sing en masse 'Sweet Caroline' for Father Christmas to deliver a Banksy.

Meanwhile son of Luftwaffe on YouTube parades his 1966 Humber Imperial (mint.) Mmmmmmmmmm. Sweet.

We won't know for sure unless they own up.

But an art dealership, who go to extreme lengths to ensure authenticity (xray artwork, etc) who didn't notice an electrical shredder was inside the frame for the artwork?

I smell collusion here.

It's cocking a snoop to the professionals, Schiele, Tracy and Bruce Inc. etc. In any other field, it wouldn't happen, but oil and canvas is oil and canvas, yeah and a watercolur is a watercolour, yeah Bob.

Imagine getting a 'street person' in the United team for example, or to attend the Royal College of Music, or maths at Oxford? The folk who run art schools now, come from the prison service and the students are out from wherever on license thanks to a well-meaning psychologist. I've had serious threats from maniacs whilst trying to study in art school for a PhD, on top of my health condition.

Banksy is not a 'street artist' anyway, it's a professional government agency, like Hancock in the late 50's, or Anthony Gormley and his simulacra of art.

No collusion NO COLLUSION folks

I take your point, I assume they check work more closely if they can not prove provenance. Was it said he had provided some note to support authenticity.

As a possible government agent, Banksy performs a function of bigging up the talent-less as part of a general policy intent on mob rule rather than a paid police force, perversely, for example the bigging up of West Ham as the geezers and the use of EastEnders to be the governments 'gang' in reply to those horrible mining striker northerners and the appointment of Emin as the queen of Art and as the Professor of Drawing at the R.A. for more Cockney story, how's yer father and my old man said follow the van.

He is also used to decry art, to keep the power of the visual in the hands of the media.

Banksy's picture of a girl with a balloon would ordinarily be worthless, it has no intrinsic value other than the media hype.

It's not uncommon for a 'buyer' to be in cahoots,to up the prices of the market for a particular individual.

The destruction of the art piece in the showroom, has no value at all regarding art history and is a media farce only, to get London on the map as a publicity stunt for the Frieze Art Fair this week.
