Brexit responsible for hate against disabled children
Just watched this on the BBC interviewing a criminologist who believes a rise is hate crimes against disabled children is at least in part due to Brexit.
I've seen some whoppers in my time but this one is a doozey.

What a whopper of a headline: The BBC blames school attack on… Brexit
No, a criminologist held that opinion. Not the BBC. And she didn't even blame the school attack on it, she just said that Brexit is linked to a rise in hate crimes.

The implication is obviously Brexit (as I said) is at least partly responsible, otherwise why mention it?Imploding Turtle wrote:What a whopper of a headline: The BBC blames school attack on… Brexit

Re: Brexit responsible for hate against disabled children
I haven't seen the context in which the offending sentence was said but it's quite common to talk about hate crimes when talking about hate crimes. It's also quite common for a conversation to go off on a tangent, and when the conversation starts at one hate crime it's perfectly reasonable to expect the conversation to start talking about other hate crimes.ClaretMoffitt wrote:The implication is obviously Brexit (as I said) is at least partly responsible, otherwise why mention it?
This is a bullshit article intended for people like you. And you've fallen for it.

I watched it on the BBC, did they make that clip intended for me? I only found the link after a Google search so I had something to post that's relevant. So try again.Imploding Turtle wrote:I haven't seen the context in which the offending sentence was said but it's quite common to talk about hate crimes when talking about hate crimes. So you watched it on the BBC and instead of posting about it explaining your opinion you had to go and find an article that agrees with you, and yet so obviously misrepresents the clip, before posting?
Post the clip. All the Spectator dared post from it was a single line "Unfortunately the EU referendum gave some people the opportunity to act out their prejudices in a much more open way." before they decided to misrepresent AND mis-attribute the opinion.

It's ok. I found it. Here's the full Dr Mason-Bish part.
Dr Mason-Bish: It's partly better reporting so it's always going to be down to better reporting practices...
Reporter: "Dr Hannah Mason-Bish is a Crimiologist form the University of Sussex. Alongside better police reporting she believes other factors are also at play."
Dr Mason-Bish: "Unfortunately the EU referendum gave some people the opportunity to act out their prejudices in a much more open way. And so we saw hate crime and hate-related incidents increase across all the different strands. We know that social-media platforms they encourage comments and unfortunately some of those can be unpleasant, hate-filled prejudicial comments."
That's an awful lot of relevent context the "journalist" at the Spectator left out. So she was talking about all hate crimes, she also talked about better reporting practices being partly responsible, and also social media.
Now a critical-thinker would ask "why did the Spectator journalist only choose to say the BBC blames Brexit when they clearly also blame better reporting and social media?" but a really good critical thinker wouldn't have first asked themselves "why did the Spectator journalist say the BBC blamed Brexit when it was a criminologist that mentioned the EU vote?"
The article is bullshit, and so is your outrage.

Re: Brexit responsible for hate against disabled children
The inference is clear and unambiguous. I saw the piece broadcast this morning. A special School in the north east was vandalised. Graffiti was aimed at the children. What a heartless despicable act. But to link it to people voting to leave the EU is simply part of the tiresome agenda of attempting a communal character assassination on 17.4 million people who voted the opposite way the Biased Broadcasting Corporation told them to.ClaretMoffitt wrote:Just watched this on the BBC interviewing a criminologist who believes a rise is hate crimes against disabled children is at least in part due to Brexit.

Re: Brexit responsible for hate against disabled children
This thread reminded me of this article from the BBC (the headline used to be "Car Sales Plunge as Nissan Warns on Brexit")
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45743771" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
With an opening line of "New car sales in the UK plunged in September, figures show, while a major car maker has warned of the effects of a no-deal Brexit" it doesn't take much to see who the BBC blames for this decline.
Except if you read the article, about 3/4 of the way down, you get to "These are exceptional circumstances, with similar declines seen in other major European markets".
Not Brexit at all then. And if you can be bothered to read it all, or read this:
https://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2018/10/w ... on-brexit/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It's clear that the falling sales are to do with flaky EU regulation.

It's weird how you take the moral highground on here, yet on twitter you post weird stuff like "Deaaath" on the club's tribute to untimely death of the Leicester chairman. You oddballClaretAndJew wrote:God damn experts and their knowledge of things that they've spent years studying.

Firstly, moral high ground? Talking about experts isn't anywhere near discussing morality.
Secondly, my tweet was a tongue in cheek poke at the clubs social media use.
I have never claimed any moral high ground anywhere.
But thanks for stalking me.
Re: Brexit responsible for hate against disabled children
She's right about social media bullying being on the rise, but not about it being Brexit-related. There was a case reported last week where a woman admirer of Diana Ross was targeted by a virtual lynch mob for daring to try and look like her - "cultural appropriation" or some such rubbish. And these were certainly not Brexit stereotypes - they would have considered themselves to be liberals.
